1) Message boards : News : Arecibo still threatened with closure. (Message 1794968)

I'm pessimistic about the chances that it will change anything, as the President cannot change Congressional budget priorities, and only has limited ability to move money between NSF programs. However, bringing attention to the issues of science funding in this country cannot hurt.

Actually, yes it can. A lot. Badly targeted futile gestures cause compassion fatigue, waste volunteer resources and bring discredit to the campaign.

That petition as it stands can be read as "some privileged science people want money for their toys / this is charity for Puerto Rico" and I can's see that pulling many heart strings nor purse strings.

Who are the actual decision-makers? When is their next decision point? What issues do they care about? Who has influence over them? Can they be swayed by any particular sections of the media? Is there anything in particular they are frightened of that can be used against them?

Who else could or should be targeted to be high-profile support? Celebrity physicists? Public-friendly science presenters? Children's education programme presenters? Science-based media channels? Technical columns authors in the mainstream press? Popular science authors?

Who else could or should be targeted for funding? Celebrity astronomers? Public-friendly science presenters? Space industry companies?

What other revenue streams could it provide? Other governments' funding? Why isn't the dish covered in advertising?

That petition as it stands says vaguely what could be lost but there is nothing in that petition for anyone to care about. What impact would its closure have on society? Science? Research? National pride? The local economy? How many jobs are affected? What sort of science project will be cancelled? What will be irretrievably lost? What opportunities may never be explored? What impact will its closure have on me, my children and my grandchildren?

How can social media be used? What images of the local economy suffering? What catchy phrases? What exciting images tagged #nomorelikethis? What other campaigns have worked and can be copied? How does CERN get funding for ever-larger particle colliders? How was the money approved to fix the Hubble Space Telescope? Can students or pupils be motivated by "You won't get to use this"? Can educators be motivated to speak out?

If you were to go to your bank manager to ask for a loan to fund the Aracibo telescope, what reasons would you give for the money? If you were selling shares in Arecibo, what marketing slogans could you use? Would an "Adopt an astronomy project" scheme work? (That last one is actually a damn good idea.)

Who benefits from the telescope? Why can't they pay?

I understand many USA citizens have a 'small government, low tax' philosophy. How can such-minded people be made to believe this funding is a worthwhile government investment?

Some people think this is tax money being spent pacifying UFO conspiracy theorists - how can you show it is not? Arecibo is so closely linked to SETI that this looks to some like tax money being used to very inefficiently look for little green men, money that could be spent on climate change, looking for habitable exoplanets, funding ISS research projects - why shouldn't it? Why would this be money well spent?

If there is a funding crisis, do some of those questions help?

BOINC FAQ for error -1
Thank you for the link.

I do have the latest drivers for my (oldish) NVidia card and the most recent DirectX. DXDiag is happy with my video drivers.

"But the only sure workaround in case the project does have graphics is not to look at the graphics or to use the screen saver."

:(

Oh, well.

Thank you for the reply.

I had a work unit fail (after 8½ days of processing time) which someone else has since finished successfully. (So zero credits to me.) What sort of thing may cause such a failure? Is it worth me risking processing other workunits of this type / from SETI@Home?

Workunit: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=417840361

My result: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1170821952

This is on a PC that is not overclocked, with Windows ME, BOINC Manager v5.4.11 (the most recent that actually still works on this PC).

I foolishly installed BOINC on my Sony VAIO FX201 laptop. The processor fan lasted nearly two months before it wore out and died. Sadly, that allowed the processor to cook.

But it did give me the excuse to replace a 700MHz Duron with a 1400MHz Athon.

Do other websites have the same behaviour when posting large amounts of data?
If so you may want to have a look at the WinGate settings to see if there's something like Max post size or similar that could be blocking your connection.

I don't know about other web sites but the WinGate clue helped in conjunction with the hints at MTU.

Problem:

Windows ME
Home local network
Using WinGate for NAT
These messages in the log:
Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of 500
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|No schedulers responded
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Couldn't connect to URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/.Please check URL.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Detaching from project

Solution:
Upgraded WinGate v6.0.4 to v6.1.1 which allowed me to change the MTU from 1500 to 2500 (2500 value picked at random)

Search in the WinGate help file for MTU, two hits.
DHCP Configurable Options: follow the advice to allow local MTU values.
Network Connections: Override interface MTU - I chose 2500 and its working for me so far.

I have attached to SETI@Home and the SETI Beta. As for being able to change my forum preferences: see the .sig

Hi SandJ,

The registry entries for older OS's like WinME are a little different, but fortunately, the TCP/IP implementation hasn't suffered many changes over the years. Therefore there are corresponding parameters in your OS. The following artcile at MS knowledge base should provide you with the information you need to port the solution from XP to ME. Take a look, and let us know if any of this helps, ok?

Regards,
Wander

PS: For the record, the TCP/IP settings for Win95-based systems sits on HKLM\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\VxD\\MSTCP

Ooh, that was helpful. Thank you for taking the trouble to find that for me.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\VxD\\MSTCP
PMTUBlackHoleDetect from 0 to 1
PMTUDiscovery left at 1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Class\\NetTrans\\0001
MaxMTU from 1500 to 1472 to 1500 to 548 to 8548 to 2548.

I tried all those and although I could make it less that 1500, I could not make it more at 1500. I tried various settings down to 400 and it made no difference.

Meanwhile, my troubles with the forum made someone suggest WinGate might be the problem: it was. Solution follows ...

Do you connect through some kind of firewall or restrictive proxy?

I am on a home network using WinGate for NAT. The PCs are running Windows ME. My internet connection is ADSL via a Thomson Speedtouch 330 modem thingie.

I am not running a software firewall that I am aware of. I do not know what is meant by "restrictive proxy" - I have done a quick Google search and I'm pretty sure there isn't one of those involved.

That directs me to a M$ site that talks about changing the MTU but it

"APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

and I'm running Windows ME. Registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\tcpip\\parameters

does not exist.

I have discovered that when posting to the forum from home, I can do so provided the message is no more than about 1K. I tried a 2048 character message, click on 'post' and nothing happens. 1500 chars fails, 1000 chars succeeded and 1024 chars succeeded. The same is true when I edit a post.

Why might that be? I know that from work I can post very long messages.

And could it be related to why I cannot attach to SETI projects?

And I can set my forum preferences from my work PC but not my home PC. Again, it just sits there doing nothing when I try to post the changes back.
