travel at Light speed

Post: I am not a scientist but i like to ask questions It would take 353,7 days of constant 1G (9,81 m/s^2) acceleration to reach the speed of light. In that time you would travel 4,58 billion Km. But the human body can take more than 1G, not sure what's the limit, and for how long. --------------------- Note: That's 353,7 years from wherever you want to observe it. LoL. |

Post: It seems funny that they would include Ceres in with the dwarf planets. How big is the second-largest asteroid between Mars and Jupiter? Ceres is quite-a-bit smaller than Pluto or Eris. It seems like a funny place to draw the size line. What is it, 500 miles/805 km? Its diameter is 930 Km and its mass represents 1/3 of the total mass in the asteroid belt. It's believed to contain more water than Earth itself. It fills the gap between Mars and Jupiter, where the 5th planet should be according to the Titius-Bode law. http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/ |

Post: I heard about a "beacon" being sent, but I don't think it has been implemented. Major problems being: 1) Yep. 2) Easy, take the 50 or 100 closest stars and point the antennas to all of them, in turns. ;) 3) It would still be bood. First, we'd know anyway that we are not alone in the universe, and besides, it'll give us a chance to stop killing each other for resources and stupid crap and unite to kick ET's butt. |

Post: I'm going to go out on a limb here, and risk being bashed and burned at the stake. Am I the only one that thinks the gravitational and velocity dilation of time is a crock of bull-dreg? Gravity may curve light, yes, but time dilation caused by gravity or speed is an illusion. ;) At least in my opinion of course. Come on, somebody back me up. /Regards |

Post: Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is how we, as organisms, would cope with the acceleration required for even, say, 0.5C velocities. Well, I'm pretty sure that by the time we figure out how to travel at (or faster than) the speed of light, we'll also know how to deal with intense accelerations. ;) Although, I wouldn't mind spending one entire month accelerating to reach the speed of light. It's worth it. /Regards. |

Post: I've thought that for the past 50-60 years or so, we've let The Universe watch the likes of "I Love Lucy", "M.A.S.H", "Friends", etc. How would a civilization recognize them? Our Radio and TV signals don't have enough power to spread very far in outer space. I'm pretty sure they don't even reach Alpha Centauri -the nearest star-, and we don't have intelligent neighbours in our system that we know of. Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong. /Regards |

Post: It would really suck if nothing or nobody could travel faster than light, wouldn't it? Yes, but... Wormholes: Probably the most bogus theory for space travel that has ever existed. Non-biological: Ok, so we send robots out there, and maybe in a couple million years we can hear from them. ;) Cryonics: Supposing cryonics is viable in the future, it would still take too long. The nearest star to our Sun (Proxima Centauri) is 1.33 parsecs, or 4.3 light-years away. That's like 43,875 trillion Km (that's 27,422 trillion miles, for all you imperial units users). And Proxima is around the corner. Unless we fool Einstein, we are pretty much confined to our own galaxy, and that's being super optimistic. I feel the need... the need for speed! ;) |

Post: Einstein's theory of special relativity has been one of the most challenged theories of all time. Physicists are constantly trying to prove it wrong, but Einstein always wins. But Albert Einstein is almost contemporary to us. He died in 1955, that's "just" half a century. I'm not saying he was wrong, but maybe he was and we can't see it now. Maybe in 200 years, when mathematics, physics and technology have evolved more, somebody will find a way to go around the bounds imposed by Einstein's "laws". I like to keep the faith and an open mind. I like to think it's possible but we don't know how yet (YET being the key word). It would really suck if nothing or nobody could travel faster than light, wouldn't it? Another thing we can do is to wait until aliens with FTL travel capabilities visit us, so they can teach us how to do it. Or wait until 2063. Any trekkie knows that's when Dr. Zefram Cochrane invents the warp drive and the first FTL test trip will be made by a human being. ;-) Edit: April 5, 2063 at 11:15. |
