1) Message boards : Number crunching : Panic Mode On (110) Server Problems? (Message 1914828)

Ho hum, many thanks anyway :(
Is there any way of persuading the gnomes of Berkeley that I can easily handle much more than they are giving me?

No, because the 100 WU limits are to stop the servers from falling over completely. There have been suggestions made to make it possible to increase the limits to some degree- but it would never be enough to see even reasonably fast systems through the weekly outage without running out of work, let alone the high end ones.
And due to the current server performance issues (may have been fixed during this outage- we'll have to wait and see) the after outage recoveries have been more protracted than usual.

Having raised every possible criterion to the maximum, I still only ever get enough work to last for less than a single day on my main machine. The other two can keep going OK, being rather slower. The consequence is that these days, during what has become a "normal" weekly outage, I run out of work. Is there any way of persuading the gnomes of Berkeley that I can easily handle much more than they are giving me?

Thank you all for your advice. Good to know it is all of us!
I do not trust myself to use the cmd window so I shall use a combination of patience and the retry button.

Same here but I also wonder if there is a problem with dowloads which is going unrecognised? I am suffering the dreaded "Retry in xxx minutes" time and time again, project backoff etc. Computers go to one or the other or both very quickly indeed, even though there is absolutely no problem with Internet access, routers or anything else.
As a result, work does not get reported. Anyone any ideas?

Saw this news very early this morning and was too shocked to respond. Richard was one of the world's good peaople. Such people are all too rare these days.

I am always lost in (genuine) admiration for all you people who know how to do things. I am a mere mortal who wants to be able to use this darn machine!
Anyway, for now things appear to have returned to normal. Tasks are being run and completed and the Gods are allowing me as many tasks as I need.
Thanks once again for all the advice - some of which is completely beyond me but is still very much appreciated.

Many thanks for the advice. Hard disc thoroughly checked and nothing wrong whatsoever. Happily, I have now downloaded a pile of v8 tasks and they are so far checking out OK. When I have a chance I shall crack the machine open and give it a good blow and suck and see what it looks like then.
One though, however. I recently started using AVG Zen for all virus and disc functions. I am not sure if it really cares for Boinc. I suspect it tries to check every operation for safety and maybe that is causing occasional jerks in operation.
Anyway, keeping fingers crossed.

Very odd. Had to reboot and then found that no CPU tasks were running. There should be four plus my NVIDIA tasks. Only NVIDIA is running and I cannot download new CPU tasks and still none are running. I have changed no settings anywhere that I know of. According to my account data, computer Starbug currently has some 570 tasks, none of which I can see on my computer. BOINC knows there are 4 CPUs available. There appear to be piles of Version 8 files waiting. Why on earth does BOINC think I have a limit of three tasks? What have I done and what should I do?

One problem solved.
Easy, of course: repair BOINC. GPU units now running OK.
Firefox still not working, though!

I am using a GeForce GTX 660 and this has done excellent work on GPU units in the past. However, the driver has been updated today by NVIDIA and BOINC is telling me that the GPU is missing, so crunching of GPU units has ceased.

Another possible symptom is that Firefox will not now load: fine if I download it fresh each time but as soon as I close it, it will again not load.
I am utterly clueless as to how to proceed.

Any help in simple words that an idiot can understand would ne most gratefully received.

I lay on my chest and I thought it best
To pretend I was having a evening rest;
I lay on my tum and I tried to hum
But nothing particular seemed to come.
My face was flat on the floor, and that
Is all very well for an acrobat;

But it doesn't seem fair to a Friendly Bear
To stiffen him out with a basket-chair.
And sort of squoze which grows and grows
Is not too nice for his poor old nose,
And sort of squch is much to much
For his neck and his mouth and his ears and such.
