Posted 7 Jun 2010 by ![]() Post: Zoot Suit Riots Come to an End (1943) Named for the style of clothing favored by the mainly Mexican-American victims of these clashes, the Zoot Suit Riots erupted between American servicemen stationed in Los Angeles, California, during WWII and the city's minority residents. While the local press lauded the attacks by the servicemen and described them as having a "cleansing effect" on the city, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt denounced them as "race riots" rooted in discrimination |

Posted 7 Jun 2010 by ![]() Post: To Up Fat Burn, Skip Eating before Workout Though many professional athletes eat before training, new research suggests that working out on an emptier stomach may actually help people burn more fat. In a recent study, European researchers found that cyclists who trained without eating first burned significantly more fat than those who ate. Another study, published in April, found that those who did not eat before working out burned a higher proportion of fat to carbohydrates than those who did, despite the fact that they performed worse in intensive cycling sessions than participants who ate before the workouts. |

Posted 7 Jun 2010 by ![]() Post: Paul Gauguin (1848) First a sailor and then a successful stockbroker in Paris, Gauguin took up painting on weekends when he was in his mid-20s. Eventually, with the encouragement of Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, he devoted himself completely to art, quitting his job and separating from his wife and five children. Today, he is recognized as a highly influential founding father of modern art whose bold experiments with color led directly to the Synthetist style. |

Posted 22 Mar 2010 by ![]() Post: Great Britain Passes the Stamp Act (1765) Intended to help pay British debts from the French and Indian War, the Stamp Act established the first direct tax levied on the American colonies. It required all newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents, commercial bills, advertisements, and other papers issued in the colonies to bear a tax stamp. The act was vehemently protested by the colonists, and the Stamp Act Congress—the first significant joint colonial response to any British measure—petitioned for its repeal. |

(Message 982549)
Posted 22 Mar 2010 by ![]() Post: Fatal Familial Insomnia Fatal familial insomnia is a rare genetic disease that interferes with sleep and eventually leads to death. The disease is the result of mutations in a certain protein, which cause plaques to build up in the thalamus, the brain region responsible for sleep regulation. Patients initially suffer from insomnia and progressively develop more serious problems—including hallucinations, rapid weight loss, and dementia—before dying. |

Posted 22 Mar 2010 by ![]() Post: Saturn's Rings Far From Peaceful Scientists have long thought that Saturn's rings are stable and slow to evolve, but new images from NASA's Cassini orbiter have revealed that they are actually quite fluid and changing. They show that collisions are fairly routine, that chunks of ice leave trails of debris in their wakes, and that, at times, rings will rapidly rearrange themselves. The images also indicate that though the rings are largely composed of water ice, which is white in color, the ice of Saturn's rings is red, colored by an unknown contaminant. |
