Once Upon a Time, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Astronomers have confirmed that a galaxy detected by the Hubble telescope is the most distant object ever observed. This galaxy, called UDFy-38135539, is 13.12 billion light-years from Earth. Because of the time it takes for light from such a distant galaxy to reach Earth, experts believe the light they observed was emitted when the universe was just 600 million years old. Prior to this finding, the most distant confirmed galaxy was one 12.93 billion light-years from Earth and the most distant observed object of any kind was a gamma-ray burst that originated 13.09 billion light-years away

Warming Threatens Cold-Blooded Creatures

Rising global temperatures are threatening the populations of lizard species all over the world. Lizards are cold-blooded creatures, meaning their internal body temperatures are regulated by the temperature of their environment. Because temperatures today are so high, lizards are increasingly retreating to the shade when they would normally be basking or hunting for food. As a result, they do not have the energy necessary to support a clutch of eggs or embryos and are not reproducing as they once did. Massive extinctions are now being seen in many areas of the world, including Mexico, the Amazon Basin, and equatorial Africa.

Scytale

Said to have been utilized in ancient Greek military campaigns, the scytale is a cryptographic tool used in the creation and deciphering of transposition ciphers. It consists of a cylindrical rod around which a strip of paper or leather is wound. Because the message is written upon the wound strip, it appears as an illegible jumble of letters to anyone who does not bear a scytale of the appropriate diameter.

Iceland's Laki Volcano Begins 9-Month-Long Eruption (1783)

In 934, an eruption of Iceland's Laki volcanic fissure released 4.7 cu mi (19.6 cu km) of basalt lava, one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth in historical times. In 1783, the system erupted again, pouring out an estimated 3.4 cu mi (14 cu km) of basalt lava and clouds of poisonous compounds that killed over half of Iceland's livestock and led to a famine that killed approximately a quarter of its human population.

Crystal Gazing

Also called crystal gazing, scrying is the magical practice of divining the past, present, or future by gazing into a usually reflective, translucent, or luminescent medium, such as crystal, mirror, water, or fire. The Cup of Jamshid, described in Persian mythology as a magical cup containing an elixir of immortality, is said to have revealed to the observer all the layers of the universe
