SETI@home hibernation
(Message 2035393)
Posted 3 Mar 2020 by Chris904395093209d Post: Been a long run. In the early days, it would take almost a week to crunch 1 task with a single core CPU. The last (used) computer I bought has 2 CPUs for 16 cores / 32 threads and can get thru 150 tasks in about a day. |

Special SETI@Home Fundraiser - 26 x 16TB datacentre drives required for the project's data storage
(Message 2034794)
Posted 1 Mar 2020 by Chris904395093209d Post: Were the drives purchased? We had $11,600 about 2 months ago for them and a lot of donations after that. So I was hoping to get an update since it's been a couple of months since we reached the fund raising goal. |

Posted 16 Jan 2020 by Chris904395093209d Post: A new case for the Raspberry Pi 4, it has both passive and active cooling, with a script to monitor CPU temps and spin up fan speed when needed. The Argon 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VlE654abDo I also like how all ports are on one side & the case has a power/reset button. |

Weekend Warriors - aka: not crunching Seti 24/7
(Message 2016744)
Posted 26 Oct 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: For awhile I was crunching numerous low to mid range PCs 24/7. But when the power bill came and was close to $200, I had to back off. I shut down most of them for the remainder of the summer while the AC was running, but now I have my best 2 PCs (or most power hungry PCs) running on opposite schedules (more or less 1 crunching at night and the other during the day) - this way only 1 is crunching at any point in time. |

Best Recommended Linux/Windows 10 backup software/procedure
(Message 2016051)
Posted 20 Oct 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: I have noticed that the Windows 10 backup seems to only back up "data" and not the entire system. I have been using Acronis to capture an image of my C drive or operating system drive on a weekly schedule (full image about once a month, incremental the remainder of the month). This is going to another Windows machine I have a 3 terabyte drive in as a secondary drive. Acronis also sends me an email once that backup is complete so I don't have to remember to check the status of that backup. I have also used Macrium Reflect numerous times over the years to clone my OS drive when upgrading drives. I'm also currently testing Backblaze to the cloud. This is a bit expensive but can back up entire drives to the cloud. For my data only backups I'm using Cloudberry Backup Desktop Edition that backs up data to my Raspberry Pi, Google Drive, a Synology NAS, and an Amazon S3 bucket. |

Panic Mode On (116) Server Problems?
(Message 1992666)
Posted 5 May 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: Yesterday I was wondering if all of the the files / loaded tapes were going to get split before we were going to run out of tasks to crunch, but this morning it looks like the servers took a different route and stopped splitting and creating tasks with loaded tapes / files still in the queue. This file has been on the server status page for months if I'm not mistaken, so I was kinda hoping it would have been split blc34_2bit_guppi_58389_22167_FRB121102_DIAG_0013 |

(Message 1987473)
Posted 27 Mar 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: My 3B+ had 2 tasks go into error status since Sunday. I have removed all OC changes I made before and am back to 1.4 GHz. When I made that change, and rebooted the Pi, and I looked at BOINC to make sure tasks etc. were running - and the the remaining (estimated) time for the 4 active tasks were going down between 3 - 6 seconds every second. Kinda strange I thought - but perhaps the Pi runs better at the factory 1.4 GHz setting. |

Posted 26 Mar 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: I don't recall if I installed the base desktop Raspbian, or desktop with recommended software / full version. This doesn't say much if it was the regular desktop or full desktop: PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)" NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux" VERSION_ID="9" VERSION="9 (stretch)" ID=raspbian ID_LIKE=debian Kernel is 4.14.79 The changes I made on Sunday: arm_freq=1500 gpu_freq=500 over_voltage=6 The temps are usually around 48 degrees and still running 4 tasks. The USB fan to the side of it is still at the medium setting which is what it was set at before overclocking the pi. |

Posted 22 Mar 2019 by Chris904395093209d Post: Those are great times for all four cores in use. Good and acceptable temps too. Maybe my concern of overloading the cpu is not valid. Your compute times running 4X are better than mine running 2X. Yes, running my 3B+ at stock clocks. But after watching the below video where it shows how to modify config.txt, I may kick it up to 1.5 Ghz this weekend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWl0n-uNdLc |

I have a USB fan on the side of it, and it has this heat sink: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3082 My older models run hotter with just 2 tasks running, with a smaller heat sink and other combinations of cases (case with a fan in it, a flirc case case 2 of them). |
