If, on the other hand, you are asking whether the Enhanced 5,23 can be optimized, Alex Kan is is no longer a member of the SETI team and is now doing what was described as a "real job" and unfortunately does not have the time to devote to SETI any longer, as he did in developing the previous optimizations.

Well, it doesn't seem so:

However, the new applications will include some - but not all - of the optimisations developed by Alex, and by the equivalent teams working primarily in the Linux and Windows environments. To put it simplistically, the app will include the clever programming techniques (because they apply to every processor), but won't include much of the processor-specific stuff (because it's important to Berkeley that the standard applications run on as wide a variety of CPUs as possible).

I'm curious about this point.
Why processor-specific optimization stuff cannot be included in the Seti official application?
The statement "because it's important to Berkeley that the standard applications run on as wide a variety of CPUs as possible" doesn't completely satisfy me because, after all, there are already plenty of versions for different OS/CPU pairs (Windows/x86, Mac OS X/PPC, Mac OS X/Intel, Linux/x86, Linux/x86_64, SPARC/Solaris, etc.).
So, talking from a Mac user standpoint (as I am), why not create Mac OS X/PPC_G4 and Mac OS X/PPC_G5 workers that could take advantage of the particular features of the two CPUs? Alex Kan proved this could bring to a drastic reduction of CPU time required to process a workunit on Mac systems and I don't think it would be too hard to make BOINC download the right worker based on the CPU type it's running on.

As well as running OSX 10.4.10, it is worth making sure you are running the latest version of BOINC Manager. That is 5.10.7 (or even 5.10.10), which are downloadable from the SETI@home website (shown in the menu on BOINC Manager Projects or Tasks pages when an active item is selected)

I'm sorry I forgot to mention I'm using the 5.10.7 command line BOINC version.

5.22 crashes here, too.
eMac G4@1,42GHz and Mac OS X 10.4.10.
I can provide the crash reports if you need them.
