I seem to remember just deleting app_info.xml doesn't cut it as the information is then still inherent in client_state.xml

So after removing it, and a BOINC client restart, reset the project. That should get things moving.

Even then it's a limited list. I'll see in the coming weeks if I'll add WuProp to my devices. Add some to the list.

(I haven’t ever paid for a copy of Windows, I was given maybe 3-4 Win7 keys from previous work relationships and those have lasted me through upgrades to Windows 10)
Something both the help desk people said this afternoon is that apparently, but don't hold it against me if it isn't so, any Windows 7 key not yet used by the 26th of June 2020 is going to become invalid, and that at this time already valid Windows 7 keys are becoming invalid.

The website got back to me with a new license that did work.
Without an activated Windows I can't change anything in Windows. Not sound (just basic sound, not the 5.1 system I have), not personalize my Windows, nothing. Plus the Activate Windows watermark is constantly in the lower corner, sitting over everything I start. Maybe you can live with that, but I cannot.

The second license had the Microsoft techs completely stumped, until one found out that I had a bulk Dreambox license for schools and universities only. And it was Windows 8.1 Pro. The store I bought that license from got a yelling at, although they're looking into it and maybe perhaps they manage to get me a license I can use. But that'll be tomorrow.

In the mean time I did buy a license from my own store, but will leave it packaged and boxed until I know for sure the other option doesn't work out. Will also go to that store tomorrow morning as the water cooling was 'damaged' and they couldn't take it back anymore, so they will now install it for me. Fine, also an option.

Sigh, just change a motherboard... a full 30 hours later I still sit with Activate Windows in the lower right corner.

Edit at least the stuttering problem, and the weird crashes, seem to be solved. So probably a bad Gigabyte mobo anyway

Just had a Microsoft helper try everything for the past 30 minutes, it doesn't matter. My license has expired. I need to buy a new one.
So lesson learned, even if you hate Microsoft, if you do not want to get extra costs because you change hardware, link your device to your Microsoft account! Make an account if you don't have one.

Hmmm, bought a new Windows key. Can't activate with that one either.
I'll be reinstalling Windows then.

Yeah, that's the only option left and I'll try if that still works tomorrow. Stupid that even if you put the old hardware back it won't work anymore.
Oh well, a whole day thrown at taking apart computers and rebuilding them.

Edit: I could of course sell 0.03 bitcoin (I have 0.1405) and use that money to buy a new license, but no...

I'm screwed. Put the old motherboard back, but that one is also no longer recognized. Re-inputing the key doesn't work either.
One strange message though, on the troubleshooter it says that the Microsoft servers are unavailable... either they are, or it's just my luck.

Okay, went from a Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite to an Asrock B450 Steel Legend. Nice RGB.
Had also bought a Cooler Master Masterliquid ML240L RGB water cooling, but am returning that to the store as I cannot manage to get it locked onto the CPU socket. The screws with which you hook the hooks around the socket are weird. They start with some screw thread, then there's approx. 3 mm of nothing before the thread continues. Once the hooks are hooked onto the socket however it's impossible to bridge the 3 mm of nothing. I've been at it for two and a half hours. I quit. I give up. Put the air cooler back on, three minutes work. Really.

Am now running Furmark on CPU for stability testing. CPU is at 66C and stable.
Together with Furmark for GPU max 68C.

But temps never were the problem, something else was. So will do more testing after dinner.

Edit: changing the motherboard has deactivated Windows. Any way around that besides having to buy a new copy? I already used my previous Windows 7 Ultimate key
I'm certainly not forking out €259,- just because I changed my motherboard, Microsoft!

Edit3: so I found it... you need to link your device to your Microsoft account. This means that tomorrow I have to put the old motherboard back, link it to my Microsoft account, then change the motherboard again, and upon re-entry link the new motherboard to my device. But the easiest way they want you to follow is of course to buy a new license. Which if your mobo is fried you will have to do.

Charlie, present day BOINC can be installed on a domain controller as long as you install it as a user installation. That problem where the installer would balk because it couldn't make the BOINC limited user accounts is afaik only still present for service installs. The non-service install no longer makes those accounts.

So try 7.14

I'm thinking it's the motherboard as well and I don't like Gigabyte either.
Well yes, pretty sure it's the motherboard. Started the system fresh this weekend, opened Firefox, started a video on YouTube. Within 5 minutes a BSOD. In the middle of the gathering of information for the memory dump, the system rebooted. So I don't have a dump file. I do have an error 0x00000109 with sub error 101, which points to a general pool corruption. Which could still be CPU, memory or motherboard, or a driver not being Windows 10 compatible. Let's rule out the last as it's all new hardware, all new Windows 10 Pro, all new drivers.

So I will go negotiate with the store to give me an Asrock motherboard as replacement, because when I bring this motherboard back, they will RMA it to the manufacturer and I will have to wait until they say it's broken or not, which can take several weeks. Meaning I don't have a system next to my TV then as I brought the old system to my ex already. I don't mind buying a new board.

Timing out makes sense, but I'd hoped to see what 24 hours of compute time was worth, credit wise.
Credit isn't based on time, but on the amount of floating point operations the task took. This means that a slow CPU that takes several days to complete such a task will get as much credit as a fast CPU that took minutes.

Astropulse tasks take in the region of 400+ credit per task.

When the secondary database server isn't playing hide and seek with up to one day running behind on the primary server, in general it takes just 24 hours for a task to be visible on the server once it got uploaded, reported, checked against its wing person's outcome and validated. So it can easily be that your wingmate had it reported earlier and by the time you looked in, it had validated and been deleted from the lists already. It's impossible for the project to keep all tasks forever on display, because at the moment they're already in uncharted territory for database sizes.

That said, do make sure you were watching the right system.
Your ID: 8889124 shows an AP that took close to 10 hours, whereas your ID: 8891814 shows one AP that took 5 hours+.

Can tasks just as that disappear?
Well, maybe if they were timed out already. Then their result was removed from the server already by the time you uploaded & reported it.

$4K for a Threadripper CPU????
Their EPYC Rome is more expensive, at $6,950, but it can do more as well (address up to 2TB of memory across 8 channels, use buffered memory, be used in dual sockets, address 162 PCIe 4.0 lanes, etc,)

Unless you want to wait for the Intel Cooper Lake-AP CPUs, but where the TDP of the EPYC is up to 225W, on the TR up to 280W, bring some beefy icebox for the Intel with its expected TDP of 400W !!!

Not the memory, as I got a completely new pair at the store today. It's unlikely Corsair managed to get 2 pair of bad memory to the same small shop. ;-)

I'm thinking it's the motherboard as well and I don't like Gigabyte either. Them and MSI are my bane. Asrock is my brand of choice.

Gigabyte hasn't gotten that memo. The only colours on the motherboard are in the RGB in the logo, the rest is 50 shades of black.

You are putting the two RAM sticks in the proper slots aren't you? Refer to your manual. Normally you use DIMM_B2 and DIMM_A2 slots for two sticks. To get the memory timing signals correct, the DIMMS need to be a certain distance from the cpu and of equal electrical lengths.

The motherboard manual (if you can call this rag that) says:
"The four memory sockets are divided into two channels and each channel has two memory sockets as follows:
; Channel A: DDR4_2, DDR4_4
; Channel B: DDR4_1, DDR4_3"

And then a schematic that shows you can either slot in 1 and 3, or 2 and 4 for dual channel .
I asked about that in the store and they also said best try 2 and 4 first. I'm doing that, but the system still isn't really stable. Had several Firefox crashes already. Luckily Cortana came back, yesterday I had the search open to a black screen all day, so I had to start everything via Run.

The Security and Maintenance Reliability Monitor is full of red circles with white X's. Even the Ryzen DRAM Calculator managed to hang itself and had to be forcefully closed. The hiccup, where the mouse would pauses for several seconds seems to be gone though. Perhaps that the BIOS update did that. And luckily I remember that after a BIOS update everything is reset to defaults... which on this motherboard means that the boot option goes back to legacy, which is a tiny little problem if you setup Windows to use UEFI.

By the way, this system - the Ryzen 2700X has just got 16GB RAM. I also forgot about that earlier. But then today I was doing 6 things (?) at once. I question myself as I can't remember. Just as again I couldn't remember where I parked my car, and two hours after I got home my parking app notified me it was still on. So uh, that kind of day. ;-)

I agree, but have now exchanged the memory. Two new DIMMs in the slots. The store normally sends them away for testing, but they know me and changed them over without problems. They also think it's a motherboard problem.

But let's just first see for 24 hours what this does. Not jumping to conclusions.
