The advice may well help some other crunchers Bill, who might search the topic. It might even help him with his other project(s). The only other tyhing none of us suguested at the time was a project reset and or reinstall bonic.

If you are using an older machine, my guess is that you are using a 32 bit version of windows. If this is the case, windows will only use a max of 4 gig of Ram & ignore anything above that. Still it is prob worth opening up your pc & dusting all the fans, the circuit boards, addon cards <such as your graphics card etc. You might also want to remove all your ram sticks & then put them back in, in case any have vibrated loose somehow & check your SATA / IDE Cables. Remember to use an anti static wrist strap when handling ram etc & clip it to the desktop case. I use a pastry brush to dust mny pc once a month or so & find it does make a difference. The other thing to try is perhaps running 1 less work units at a time & see if that helps. Good Luck

Hi, where do I set the priority for cpu work units? I have installed luntatics 0.41 & checked the task manager & found the cpu tasks AKV8C_R1846_WINX86_SSE2X.EXE running at low priority. My GPU Task is running at above normal.

Thanks in advance

I think some here has missed the point entirely.. Running seti or any other project on your pc in its spare time is entirely voluntary. Personally, I don't care if my RAC IS 3 or 3,000,000. That is not why I joined. My desktop may not be the fastest, or the slowest <for that matter It has a newer cpu as of yesterday>; I joined to help find the intigent life that obvously isn't on that planet. For those who want a yard stick, grab a shovel, dig a hole & sooner or later your measuring tape will be too small or you will arive in China <no offence to any chinese readers of this post>. If your want credit, go sit an exam & put the result in your c.v

while all of you are baking up there in the northern hemisphere, spare a thought for those in winter "down under", who are trying to dry their laundry on a washing line, in what can best discribed as "mid winter" While today was better than average for the time of year (14c at 3pm), it still takes a while to dry a pair of jeans.

14C - the overnight LOW here was 70F/21C. You might want to hang your laundry on the bathtub shower curtain rod instead of the outside clothsline. Or set up a drying rack near your computer, and use its exhaust heat.....

3 issues with that,
1 this time of year, my bathroom is like a walk n fridge <almost a freezer on some frosty mornings. It also has frosted glass windows, so nit much heat fgets in thgru them with morning sun.

2. no room near my pc to place a rack if i want to get into my bed.

3rdly, 2 smokers in the flat, my clothes might dry indoors, but smell like a nite club on a sunday morning <the stale cig smell, unless smoking has been banned indoors in nite clubs over there since my vist to usa several years ago>

I can barely keep the air temp inside in the mid 80F's with temps at 106F outside with a 5000cfm(225gph) offset water pump during the day and I only crunch at night, on August 1st I'm going to get a bigger 7500cfm concentric pump(360gph) so that it will be a bit cooler in here, In October I plan on getting an aluminum framed single pane window replaced with a custom vinyl clad dual pane window, then I'll only have two more like that to do in January and June hopefully, their not cheap either, two of them are about $330 each and the last one is about $370 cause it's wider than the other two, if I'm stuck here I may as well be a bit more comfortable and My sister in law approves.

There is a new product on the market here, looks a bit like window tint, acts like a form of double glazsing, in winter its ment to keep the heat in, in summer, its ment to help keep inside cooler. Maybe its worth a thought. cost, nz $45 for 3 windows according to the advert on tv.

"Unless something has changed, BOINC always goes first in first out(FIFO) for work completion"

But BOINC has no clue when I'm going to take a vacation :) So it can't factor that into its calculations.

So I would much rather do "soonest deadline" first rather than FIFO. Most of the deadlines seem to be "pretty long", so that'd take care of most vacation scenarios.

Unless the backend needs them back in FIFO order for some reason (but if it wants them sooner, wouldn't it provide sooner deadlines?)

I agree, setting no new tasks a week or 3 before your planned holiday is 1 way around it. The other thing you can do <which I forced Bonic to do rescently, when I had 18 work units all due within 2 weeks & 30+ other workunits due in october> is suspend all tasks except those with the shortest deadlne until they are completed, then resume the other tasks in stages according to dealine, all of which can be done from the tasks page from within Bonic. To make it easier, you can have Bonic list all tasks by due date by clicking on the column header.
Hope that Helps. Rae
35) Message boards : Number crunching : Question about tasks remaining "completed, waiting for validation" (Message 1391957)

Post:
Just curious if anyone else is running into this, but I've got 10 tasks for Seti that have all been "completed, waiting for validation" that goes back to June 11th.
I must admit that while I am not new to using Seti and boinc for processing work units, I've never really paid much attention to the stats. If I'm not mistaken, I recall something about two computers needing to process the same wu successfully in order to receive credit. Am I correct in my recollection? If so, then these 10 units that I've processed, which apparently have been sent to other computers but not processed on their end, will remain unprocessed until if/when that computer completes its processing, or the units are reassigned to someone else who completes processing them?

Thanks to whomever takes a few moments to respond.

Derek

Hi Derek. I just had a look at your account & the Jume 11 task. When work units are created & sent, ususally people have up to 6 weeks to complete them & send back the result. The due date for the workunit you are talkng about is aug 3, 10:32am UTC. Validation will happen when the other person who has the same unit sends in their result. Until then, its hurry up & wait. Inbetween time, keep on crunching the numbers :)

8 years ago really isn't all that ancient.

For computer hardware, it is.

Very much so. Like 1 human year is 7 dog years equililant.. The 8088 machine I mentioned earlier in the thread was purchased from the place where I was studying. They replaced them with 80286 & 80386 based pcs which had a 16 bit data bus & 16 bit address bus. RAM Above 640k was configured as either extended or Expanded RAM on an Addon card in an expansion slot, rather than plugged into the main Board itself.

trust me, I know what it means. The first pc I ever owned was a 8088 ( 9.54mhz in 1988) based machine with 2 360k floppy drives & a 32 ramdisk for command.com using ms-dos 3.30. With that, I was able to write dbase3 compaitible data base programs lol. It was a compadore pc 10 series III, 640k RAM. By today's standards of quad cores , 6 cores etc, Both it & my Desktop are antique. Still there is something novel about old things & old people, Old people carry with them a lifetime of aquired knowledge & were it not for our "antiques" the quad cores etc would not exist; just as we we would not exist without our parents, grand parents etc.

Unfortunately it looks like their motherboard does not support Core CPU's.

With the 9400GT being speced for ~50w there probably isn't much headroom for a newer more powerful GPU, but something along the lines of s 530 or 630 would probably have a bit more grunt.

The actucal Motherboard is this 1:

[url]http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00783614 [url]

Also known as RC410-M (Asterope3). From the above website, here is a bit of what it says:

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, RC410-M (Asterope3)
Figure 1: The RC410-M (Asterope3) motherboard

Motherboard description
Manufacturer's motherboard name: Pegatron ECS RC410-M
HP/Compaq name: Asterope3-GL8E
Form Factor
Micro-ATX: 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)
Chipset
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 for Intel Processors
Front-side bus speed
533/800 MHz (processor dependent)
Processor upgrade information
Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
Pentium D 9xx Dual Core
Pentium D 8xx series Dual Core
Pentium 4 6x1 series
Pentium 4 6xx
Pentium 4 5xx
Celeron D

I am wondering if it still possible to get any of the above processors & if so, which 1 to get. Assuming That HP listed the cpu's from Fastest to slowest, I am guessing that it already has something close to the top of the specified range in it. <Pentium D Duel Core 2* 2.80Ghz with FSB @ 800mhz>

The 9400GT is already an improvement on the original video card < Nvida 7500LE>. From the BIOS date <American MegaTrends Inc, 3.22 7/11/2006>, I am Guessing that the system was manufactured somewhere around 1986, especially given the mother board restraint of max 2 gig RAM. The current GPU is sitting in the PCI Express slot. As I said, This desktop is "Antique". For its age, it is amazing what it can do. It can for instance run windows 7 <ultimate version installed on 1 partition> & 8 <I was a tester for for the Pre-release version & quite frankly, unless you have a touch screen, win 7 is a better product. It seams to run vista home basic best, of the 3 os's that are installed on its partitions, <xp sp3, vista H.B sp2 & win 7 ultimate, all 32 bit>. My current RAC is being solely generated by this meseum piece & I am glad that it is capible of helping with SETI. Bonic is installed in win 7 & vista & by using compatiblity mode sharing the same Data Directory, I am able to share tasks between those 2 os's.

Thamks for that. I was hoping a could squeeze a little more speed out of my antique, but I guess for its age, its still Pretty good.
