1) Message boards : Number crunching : CPU WUs trashed while computer shutdown (Message 1789847)

Hi Atlov
My desktop is a slightly older version of what you have.
I run various work units from 3 projects.
Your power settings are in the control panel
Try resetting them to default.
Another thing I have learned along my years of number crunching is to snooze all tasks, then exit boinc manger before shutting down or rebooting; likewise before installing windows updates or defragging.
There is also the option of doing a system restore, choosing a a restore point prior to running the Magician.
Hope that helps solve your issues.

Kind thoughts

Vicki

Glad to hear it.

I have dedicated this poem to Bonic research volunteers everywhere and to those who help others via this & other message boards:

The math of gpu computing is now back under way
Following instructions, executing them in the order they say
To the team of online peer assistance, Hip Hip Hooray!
Your help and advice is much appreciated
A virtual family related
by a shared goal escalated
A circle with no sides
Seeing the throughput graph rise rather than slide
research also being done in the computers spare cpu time
Celebrate with a milkshake flavored lime

Same thing here.

Since the upgrade to Win10 my 7640G gpu on my laptop crashes out quite often. Never did with Win 8.1 using the same drivers. I also updated to the newest AMD driver and it still happens. Gonna add this command line into the .txt file and see how it works.

Do you also find that periodically your screen goes blank, windows produces a tone similar to unplugging a usb device, before the screen lights back up?

My aspire desktop is a mix of AMD GPU & Intel I3 CPU (4 Logical processors, 2 actual physical, 2 Virtualization cores)

I have installed a driver from amd.com, and put that period line into all 4 copies of the specified file name.. without wanting to jinx it, at this point in time, computation is now moving in the right direction.

Thank you so much to all who helped :)

ok, My computers should have be visible; it is the aspire running windows 10. Tried suspend / resume task. no change, had a display driver error message within 20 seconds of the task starting to calculate. Then it just stopped again. Latest driver installed from windows update. So what do I try next?

Try to edit mb_cmdline*.txt file and add there

-period_iterations_num 500

Save file then suspend/resume task.

where do i find that file? a search of bonic program data reveals 4 files by that name, some files size 0 bytes, others 114 bytes

22 views and no replies or answers.. what am I to think? The task is still showing 21.130% complete even with all the time between starting this thread and adding this post. At this point abort task or reset project seams like the best solution.. unless anyone else has any better ideas

Dear Readers of this post.
For several days now, 1 of my seti@home AMD/ATI Tasks has remained at 21.130% completed according to BONIC Manger. Should I abort the task? The task has been alLocated 0.0190 CPUs + 1 AMD/ ATI GPU. Host Software environment,64 bit windows 10 Home edition, 4 gigs of ram + 4 gigs windows readyboost. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. I am using the standard application provided with the task setiathome_v8.00_windows_intelx86_opencl_ati5_sah.exe; task name : 19mr11ad.15949.24104.13.40.215

hi. seti work units vary in estimated computer time. while some units maybe 3-4 hrs, others might be 9 - 12 hrs or more like the astropulse units, which are closer to 55 - 60 hrs on average. Yes your GPU computes faster than your cpu & work unit estimated times also vary a lot in those. If you run only 1 work unit on your cpu, your gpu will complete its tasks quicker still. Since your cpu supports SSE2, I suggest if you want toi complete your work units even faster, try using the lunatics installer v 0.41 whichj has optimized data processing programs for both your cpu & gpu.
Happy crucnching

Your other option is that there are suitable PCI cards available with low end NVidia chips in them, but you'd probably have to mail order them from the US or Europe.

Is there a card you can recommend and a place to purchase it from?

The third problem is that for OpenCL to be used with an AMD GPU the processor must have or above, what processor does this machine have?

Claggy

Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.66 ghz ( single core) It does support SSE2. I have already downloaded Lunatics v0.41 & it chugs along nicely for its age.

Hi. I am upgrading an old Dell computer. The motherboard has an AGP port on it.
The desktop runs windows 7. Will either of the following Graphics cards be recognised by Bonic for crunching?

256MB Asus A9550GE/TD/256M (Radeon® 9550) AGP 4X/8X graphics card.

ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition Bus Type AGP 8x
Vista Capability This video card is capable of running Windows Vista, without any of
the new major features, and is suitable for Vista Home Basic.
Graphics Processor / Vendor ATI Radeon X800 XT
RAMDAC 400.0 MHz
Max Resolution 2048 x 1536 at 85.0 Hz
Max Monitors Supported 2.0
Interfaces 1.0 x DVI-I - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15) ( On supplied cable ),
1.0 x S-video output - RCA ( On supplied cable ),
1.0 x VGA - 4 pin mini-DIN ( With adapter ),
1.0 x Composite video output - 29 pin combined DVI,
1.0 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)
API Supported DirectX 9.0,
OpenGL 2.0

Memory

Video Memory Installed 256.0 MB
256-bit memory interface
Technology GDDR3 SDRAM

if either or both of these are suitible, which 1 would be the better choice?

Thank you in advance

Are you keeping the hard drive from your old rig? If yes, then all you will need to do is add drivers for any new hardware, the wondows instalation itself might be salvagible.. might save you a few hrs <& a lot of downloading> of install & updates. I too have been rebuilding a pc, a Dell 4600. I found the easist way to reinstall / upgrade windows from xp to win 7 was from a bootible usb drive with all the windows files on it. Be sure to use a usb 2 port for this.

Hmm, that's a tricky 1. How many cpu tasks are running at the same time as the gpu unit? Since that host has 4 cores, I'd be inclined to try setting max cpu tasks to 3 or less to see if that makes a difference. May Im also suggest openng up your system unit & dusting <especially the cooling fans & power supply with a pastry bruch or similar> & physicaly removing & reinserting your graphics card in case somethng has crept in there. Error checking & defragmenting your hard drive may also be worth a try.

Yeah! I managed to find a higher speced cpu for my socket 775! not quite top of the line, but its an improvement. a Pentium d 945 @ 3.4 GHZ 2 core, 2 logical processors..a bit of a step up from 2.8 ghz..

More problems with GPU crunching:

While, for instance, a WU like 17fe09aa.30537.5798.13.12.155_1 (SETI@home cuda42) works just fine I now start to see the same reset problem with other SETI@home GPU WU as well. As a notice known affected WU are:

17fe09aa.30537.5798.13.12.88_1 (cuda42)
18ap08ah.12735.22976.9.12.35_1 (cuda32)

Any idea/suggestions why this happens?

How many gpu tasks are you running at once? If more than 1, drop it back to 1 as your gpu only has 512k of ram to work with. Also, since your dektop has 4 cpus, allow seti / Bonic to only use 3 of them.

Other thoughts, Try closing bonic, exit all tasks & run the Luntatics installer v0.41. you can download that from here
http://mikesworldnet.de/produkte.html Be sure to grab the 64 bit installer for your system as it has 64 bit windows on it.

After restarting Bonic, your tasks should continue where they left off from. Note, future work units will show on the seti site as anoynmous platform.
I suggest, when installing that you select either cuda ver 3.2 or 4.2.

If you realy want to change the priority you need to use a program to do that automaticaly like Fred´s priority tool.

Where do I get that from? I hacve seen inmentioned in many posts but have been unable to locate where to download it from
