I recently upgraded to the latest version of BOINC, and had some trouble with it, so I went back to the previous version.

Ever since then I've had "communication deferred" and every time the time winds down to zero, it ups it again and starts the countdown all over again. I've tried updating and resetting the project. I only have this problem on my laptop, not my desktop where I went through the same uninstall/reinstall procedure.

Any suggestions?

Since I started with SETI back in 1999, it has appeared that there might be a naming standard identifying work units with the Arecibo recording date in the first six characters. The SETI@home Screen Saver shows the GMT recorded date stored withing the unit.

Please let me know if this is correct.

Yes. The WU name identifies the time, band, number etc.

If so, then a problem may be developing.

I sent you a detailed "Private message" on the 17th. As a safeguard, I stopped SETI processing on one of my fastest computers that day.

Also, please let me know soon if it is okay to restart SETI processing on that computer.

Matt's rather overwhelmed with the day-to-day running, and there are hundreds of thousands of participants on this project. Just 0.01% of our troubles would make his inbox unworkable!

The reason why I addressed this to Matt is that I have several work units that apparently have incorrect identifying date/time stamps.

Depending on how the SETI staff use these headers, this might mean a serious problem in later connecting the results with their records. That is why I suspended processing of those units for now.

I might try "Number Crunching", but I am not sure if anyone outside of the SETI staff would know the fine details of their system that well.

Oh, and thank you for the welcome, Martin, even though a bit belated, since I've been with them for nine years.

Took your advice web03 and loaded optimised apps on both machines. They seem to be processing a lot faster now. Wish I new about these before!

I might give Linux a try. I have messed around with Live CD-ROM versions in the past. Used for network stuff and the odd forgotten password.

I want to try and hit 50k credits by the end of the year. Don't cash to buy new machines yet but will when I have cash.

Once cash flow sorts itself out I might buy up a load of servers from Ebay. Seen some nice systems from liquidation companies, selling off 20+ severs cheap.

Thanks for your help and I am sorry for this problem. I have updated my preferences, saved them to the web site and updated the seti project in BOINC manager. I have checked my preferences settings and it says that my PC is visible yet when i do a user search on my own name it says that my computer is hidden.

Am I missing something or could there be a problem at Seti's end?

I have been crunching data for Seti@home since April 7, 2002. I have two work units with pending credit, they have been waiting for some time now. I know that SETI has grown by leaps and bounds but I don't understand why the work units have been waiting to be credited for such a long, long time. Maybe someone at SETI can check into that.

I've just restarted BOINC after being away from it for a while, and SETI is the only task I've attached (so it can't be this debt thing). I'm having precisely the same issue as the original poster, any ideas?

Resources for them are exactly 33.33% between the three of them.

To protect my computer, I run Norton Internet Security. In spite of multiple rules allowing all three BOINC applications to connect, I am not receiving work packets. Are there specific TCP/UDP ports that I need to open as well?

So... I though I'd checkout what all the hoopla was about and attatched to Beta last night... promptly DL 5 AP WUs. Crunched on one WU for almost 15 hours and reached 44% complete. Now BOINC Mgr says it's running the AP WU, but no more progress or CPU time is being logged. Task Manager only shows the 3 S@H WUs getting CPU time.

Also my host has frozen/locked up 5 times in the past 15 hours. I've seen BSOD a few times in the past... maybe 3-4 times a month, but never total freeze/lockup. Coincidence??? I don't think so. I've suspended Beta project and rebooted and resumed S@H on all 4 processes. If stability resumes, I'll abort all Beta WUs in my cache.

I could try setting the host to stock/factory clock and try again, but that is one consession I'm not willing to make.. Are there known pre-requisites... like BOINC 5.10.45, or running at stock clock that I'm unaware of? This was my first attempt at running Beta and I might be lacking in know-how.

Whilst I have been working with boinc/Seti since 1999 this is my first post, so be gentle with me, ( I am a mechanical engineer and know litle of electronics, computers or programming!) This post is of interest to me since I was producing an RAC of around 1800 a few weeks ago, but this has now dropped to an average of around 1400.

The thread so far has explained the rationale behind this, but I have questions in relation to "Wingmen".

Are we always paired with the same wingman/group?

If so is this related to country or signup date?

and finally, JavaJim says he began looking at his wingmen, how do you identify them and view the wingmens stats?
