21) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : CUDA GPU workunits -- processing errors (Message 1226476)
Posted 3 May 2012 by Profile Jim Wright
Post:
I've noticed that quite a few of the CUDA workunits sent to me have unsuccessfull completion (computation error). Is it the code or my hardware?

The display(s) and Windows/7 are not complaining of any problems.

The unit is "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465".

Thx, Jim Wright

I have a AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor plus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465. The tasks page shows six tasks running simultaneously plus "0.67 CPUs+ 1.00 NVIDIA GPU". Check the Advanced/Preferences/Processor Usage tab and the percent to be used on multi processor systems. Set it to 100%. Also check your computing preferences at set@home.

I do have an observation that may need some fixing:

Workunit delivery on such a system seems to be severely constrained. I get only about as much work as can be processed in 24 hours rather than the three days I specified in my Computing Preferences. The amount of work delivered is insufficient to keep the machine busy over any extended (24 hours plus) outage.

It seems that a count of all workunits (both cuda and non-cuda) delivered and stored on my system is the constraining measure used whereas there should be separate totals maintained for non-cuda and cuda workunits. I'm seeing 7-8 hours each for non-cuda workunits and 15-20 MINUTES each for cuda workunits.

Therefore I would need 72 non-cuda workunits available to cover a 3 day outage. AND ALSO ... 288 cuda workunits to keep the cuda processors busy during the same 3 days.

When long Seti@home outages occur, I have to do work from other sites just to keep the machines busy. Luckily, Einstein@home is also of interest to me.

24) Questions and Answers : Windows : FORCED use of Internet Explorer (Message 907376)

Post:
Why oh why do you now FORCE me to use IE when accessing information on my account. I use Firefox by preference and am very happy with it. Now, any access to the SETI@HOME sites ignores the already running Firefox window and opens one for IE. Tut-Tut, that is not a friendly behaviour.
25) Message boards : Number crunching : Astropulse, next workunit selection queue (Message 795760)
Posted 10 Aug 2008 by Profile Jim Wright
Post:
Addition of astropulse workunits to work queues on machines having multiple processors has a small problem. Some adjustment in the order of selection on my local work queue would be nice.

ie:
Since astropulse (ap) workunits take significantly longer to process than Seti enhanced workunits, one of them (ap) should be shuffled to the head of the queue. This permits at least one ap workunit to be processed concurrently with the larger list of smaller/shorter Seti enhanced workunits.

The present method permits Seti enhanced workunits to be exhausted before ap workunits can be selected for processing. When multiple processors are available and workunit distribution ceases (frequently on weekends), the ap workunit soon becomes the ONLY workunit being processed and much of my available capability remains idle until regular distribution is restored (usually on Monday).

Thanks for listening,

SETI@HOME has obviously grown so large as to be unmanageable in its present form. To fix this impasse, I offer the following suggestion:

--------------------

Clone the systems as follows:

1) Make an identical copy (or two or three) and independent installation(s) of SETI@HOME, each containing all the elements necessary for splitting, download and upload, etc. They could be named SETI@HOME_A, SETI@HOME_B, etc.

2) Each copy would process a chosen portion of the available data and then contribute the results to a common science/results database.

3) Any user would be eligible to subscribe to one or more of the sites at their choice.

4) Redistribution of the existing equipment may be possible thus avoiding acquisition of any more.

--------------------

The benefit is that if the two or more sites were indeed independent of one another, the likelihood of at least one being available at any one moment is near certain (except in the present (10/15/2007) situation when A/C is out or if there were a significant and lengthy area-wide power outage).

The user benefits by having a continuing stream of work units to process and avoids becoming frustrated due to many frequent and lengthy outages.

The project benefits by being able to take one site down for maintenance or upgrade without impacting a users ability to acquire and process work units from one or more of the others.

Please consider my suggestion in the hopes that this very important project may once again demonstrate its true potential for the furtherance of our scientific goals.

Jeffrey,

Your response triggers a thought. What time format is the default on your system? Mine is "h:mm:ss.tt". Maybe that has something to do with it.

Can anyone please explain this message (it is in red) and what I can/need to do about it?

Also, no nearby message seems to have anything to do with it. New work was being sought at the time.

Hi, Interesting discovery ... when I set the first value to 19:00 (start time) and the second value to 14:00 (quit time), it did not take.

Then I tried other combinations, and none of them have worked.

I'm trying to suspend operations on one machine during the heat of the day, but proceed otherwise.

Using BOINC 5.10.13

Is this feature enabled???

In the next version there is a global change that allows you to cut back to say 85% processor usage. This is changable in one project and should be accepted by all projects. So, this may be an easy work around that you want.

That might work. Let's hope it can be made available soon.

31) Questions and Answers : Wish list : BOINC and a thermal problem solution (Message 346821)
Posted 23 Jun 2006 by Profile Jim Wright
Post:
I run BOINC continuously on several machines and have a thermal challenge on one of them. Room or whole house air conditioning is not available for several reasons, so I must use various strategies to maintain a reasonable inside temperature, however with the California temperatures daily reaching 90+ in the summer, this is a serious challenge.

The problem machine has a pentium dual-core chip.

One solution is to shutdown the machine or suspend BOINC processing during the daily high-heat periods, but this does not advance our mutual goals for running the projects.

A second choice is to change from two processors to one for the duration of the severe heat period. This is an acceptible alternative, but comes at a price.

One must visit each active project website and switch the machine from a two processor profile to one with a one processor limit, return to the client, press UPDATE in each active project, wait for the benchmarks to complete and do the same for the rest of the active projects. Then, when the stress is over, you have to do the same procedure to revert to the original two processor configuration.

A much simpler solution would be to enable such a change at the BOINC client which would then affect all active projects alike.

32) Questions and Answers : Wish list : DRAIN/RESUME (Message 96588)
Posted 9 Apr 2005 by Profile Jim Wright
Post:
Suggestion for BOINC Improvement.

Add a DRAIN/RESUME option to the Projects panel (right click on an individual project).

DRAIN would function to preserve my connection to a project while completing already downloaded workunits and preventing download of new ones. It would effectively cleanout the existing stash without disturbing any profile settings. This is preferable to simply disconneting from a project which also discards the in-flight workunit.

RESUME would restore normal functionality for a project where a drain had been applied.

There have been several times when this function would have been and can be very useful. For example:

<li>I'm leaving on an extended vacation and will be away from home for a couple of weeks. So, set the DRAIN on all projects far enough ahead of time that all workunits complete and no new ones are fetched prior to departure. Issue resume upon return and everything returns to normal without the need to tweak my profile or abandon workunits not processed. This is preferable to simply turning off the machine for an extended period because the report deadline for some workunits may pass while I'm not doing any processing.
<li>Maybe I want to discontinue participation in a particular project on one machine while continuing to support it on another. Solution, issue DRAIN on the one machine to complete the in process workunit while leaving everything normal on the other machine(s). This is preferable to simple disconnecting from a project because I do want to complete current workkunits and get the credit for work completed.
<li>Perhaps I want to accelerate completion of work for one project on one machine while continuing in a normal pattern on all other machines. Solution is to issue DRAIN for each other project on that machine which in effect completes the workunits for those projects and transfers all resources to the one remaining undrained. It, too, can be drained if the wish is to disconnect from the project upon completion of that workunit. This would be useful to force aggressive completion of very long running workunits (climateprediction) so that all resources could be applied to other projects. This is preferred because I've found that processing for three projects (SETI@home, Climateprediction and Einstein@home) is unsatisfactory. I'd like to drop climateprediction, but have a lot of effort committed to these very large workunits that, in all fairness to the project, should be completed before I say sayonara to them.

There are certainly other scenarios where a DRAIN/RESUME capability would provide the users with more flexibility than presently available. The largest bonus to us lies in avoiding changes to profile elements which are otherwise working well.

Your thoughtful consideration of this suggestion would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Wright

33) Message boards : Number crunching : Flushing my queue of workunits (Message 30608)

Post:
I'll be absent for a couple of months and not able to process SETI/Boinc on my main machines. Since the reporting deadline is only a couple of weeks away, I'd like to flush out the stored workunits prior to shutting those machines down.

How do you do this?

Thanks,
Jim Wright
34) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Printer Friendly pages (Message 4108)

Post:
It would be nice to have printer friendly versions of the various statistical pages. For example, the "Computer Summary" page uses large fonts and requires two pages to print from the browser (CTRL-P) when the information could be formatted in a more compact manner and contained within a single printed page. Thanks.
35) Questions and Answers : Windows : Which Partition does BOINC use for temp space (Message 4106)
Posted 4 Jul 2004 by Profile Jim Wright
Post:
I have multiple disks and multiple partitions on multiple machines. I'm using Windows/XP on some and Windows/2000 on others.
1) What partition is selected by BOINC as its default for temporary space?
2) I may wish to customize the specific partition on each machine that BOINC is to use for its temp space. How does one do this?
