Layman's explanation:

Picture a road that is 100 lanes wide.

There is an intersection where fifty roads come together, each road is ten lanes wide.

If the fifty roads aren't very congested, everyone can merge into the big road easily.

When the fifty roads are bumper-to-bumper, then it takes a long time for everyone to get on the big road.

The fifty roads are the internet, cars on those fifty roads are the SETI users, and the 100 lane road is the SETI server farm.

If you just wait patiently in the traffic jam, you'll eventually get on the 100 lane road.[/quote]

Thank you Ned Ludd, were the symptoms similar, I might accept your explanation but it does not explain why I have been travelling down this 100 lane road quite successfully since 1999 and have, apart from the various notified outages, quite happily downloaded workunits immediately at the point that my preferences schedule a download and those downloads have not stopped partway. However, since the 23 Aug this year each time a scheduled download should have happened, the computer, using BOINC, goes to get a workunit, gets its title and starts the download then fails and has to wait to reconnect. This is not a symptom of overcrowding by the merging of many roads because I have already got to my destination this is a symptom of a failure at the destination whereby an operation is started then terminated; consequently, I have to go back down the road again. The net effect is that seti@home is losing much of my computing power that I am happily donating which strikes me as being a waste for them. I don't have any worries about that I am quite happily building a swimming pool in the interim.

When I said, I am not an expert in this, I mean't that I am not an expert in BOINC, SETI and its network connections etc. However, I did start my now retired life as a systems analyst designing company intranets in 1976 when telephone lines carried 2400bps. But I do appreciate your explanation thank you.

I refer back to my original message 631012 1 Sep to Matt where for sometime now I have problems downloading WUs; the problem remains, today I note that it took all day to try and download one WU having been allocated its number but to no avail. It was only this evening after manually instructing it to retry communications some 4 or 5 times (I don't believe that I 'hammered') did it download that work unit and is now happily crunching away. Since I am not an expert in this and am not really overworked about it, I wouldn't mind an explanation in layman's language without too much emotion. Whilst it may be long again here is todays message string just in case you can see a common thread if you will pardon the pun. Hopefully I am still in the right message area if not please tell me which one to use.
Thankyou

Pierre

Actually at home right now (I usually don't come in on Fridays - for my own sanity). Still, just for the record even when I'm not in the lab I do check in from time to time and I noticed we were draining work. So before the queue ran to zero I started more splitters. This is good and bad: we're filling the ready-to-send queue, but at the expense of throttling the work we are able to send out. So be it. I'm keeping my eyes on it (when taking breaks from cleaning out my basement) so don't fret...

When you get back to work could you possibly look at this please, for several days I have been having trouble getting work units to download and the attached message are typical it takes an extremely long time once a WU is allocated to download it, sorry its so long but I have had the same problem over the past week. Thank you in advance but there is no hurry enjoy whats left of your weekend.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : Client Version Troubles (Message 140912)

As some of you who installed 5.00 have experienced, some code that checked the major version of the client was left in the scheduler. It was supposed to have been removed months ago.

I have fixed the bug. However, the delta from when a server-side bug is fixed to when the various projects update the server-side components is generally a few weeks.

So that we can continue to stabilize the client and give the projects time to update their server-side software we have pulled the 5.00 release and reset our version to 4.70.

I know our previously stated policy was that versions x.50- x.99 were supposed to be development versions, but waiting until all the projects have updated the server-side code at the rate at which we intend to stabilize and release the client would cause a few problems and sleepless nights for a few people. So in the interest of all parties we are breaking our own policy.

On a happier note: It looks like when we start the next release cycle we’ll be using the Linux versioning system. I think that’ll take care of a bunch of issues related to how clients are released and peoples expectations of what has changed between releases.

For Rom walton,
Hello, sometime ago I started a thread to which many kind people replied, basically I have version 4.45 for windows which will not update. At first it would not do anything, then following some of their advice, I eventually got it to download some work units manually. However, nothing I do can get it to work; ie upload automatically and download automatically. I am not a person who has much time to fix computer problems although I understand them to a limited degree. It has now got to the stage where the problem is sufficiently annoying that I am thinking of stopping contributing altogether since the program running on my machine is not really contributing to anything constructive. Indeed this response to this current thread is its last chance. Can you resolve the problem bearing in mind that since 1999 I have been running SETI in the large amount of spare time that my computer has available? If not I'll remove the program altogether. Thank you for your time.

Well, I went away, the machine processed and eventually uploaded all of the WU,s then it asked for 0 WUs to top up to 10 days several times, obviously nothing happened till I came home and reset the project and lo and behold it went and got 5 WUs and started working on them, looks like BOINC is a manual update program, I'll wait and see what happens when this lot processes to see if it goes automatic again!!

Perhaps one of the BOINC programmers needs to look at this thread.

Its difficult to pinpoint a problem with just error messages.

Install and run a network tracer like Ethereal and take a look at whats actually being returned. Theres eight seconds between the a request and reply, so something did come back. Just not what BOINC was looking for. Knowing what that reply is, and where it came from would really help towards understanding the problem.

Regrettably I do not know how to use said tracer, but looking at the messages below I am concerned that having changed my preferences from 5 days to 10 days just to see if I can get another workunit it recognised the change but then requested 0 work units, I now believe that there is a bug in BOINC 4.45 or that the process of uninstalling the previous version of BOINC and reinstalling the new version left a conflicting file somewhere.

Towards the begining of the messages it says '27/06/2005 18:43:34|SETI@home|Resuming computation for result 29fe04aa.10628.30560.847158.62_2 using setiathome version 4.18' but I have BOINC v4.45 installed, does that give a clue? Moreover, having downloaded 4 workunits after my reinstatement of climate prediction why did it stop again?

Pierre, I was replying to a message from Joseph Keene, about his connection problems starting again.

Looking at your logs, I don't see anything network related. Which is what Ethereal is for.

On your "requesting 0 seconds of work", if you look at the log you'll see this:

27/06/2005 18:43:34||Suspending work fetch because computer is overcommitted.
27/06/2005 18:43:34||Using earliest-deadline-first scheduling because computer is overcommitted.

Says you too much work already, so it won't download more.

It may have said that but at an average of 3hrs 45 mins for a work unit and only 4 on the machine with 10 days set in the preferences and nothing else running on the machine which is an amd 3000+ with 1 gb mem I believe that something somewhere is not doing its maths correctly.

Mr Keene,
i was the one who suggested trying another project.
we now know that it is not a boinc.exe issue, nor firewall. sadly, i am not sure what else it might be.

just things to try:

First, make a complete copy of the boinc folder into a safe place. if still no luck, you can just revert back.

you could uninstall and reinstall the current version, possibly a corruption

i do not know if you have tried it, but have you reset the project?

i also see from the first post that this was an upgrade? was the problem present before? maybe you still have the install file from your previous version? if not, i could come up with the link or file. (you should be able to just change the version # listed on the current d/l link to the version you want)

if i think of anything else to try, i'll let you know.

Micah

Micah thank you for your suggestion which partially worked however there are still some bugs, basically i am set to a 5 day preference of quantities of work units at and average of 4 hours a work unit, I have 4 sitting on the machine of which 1 is 64% done therefore I should have more, an update gives the following messages:

The initial part is climate prediction then in kicks SETI, I am inclined to agree that in the upgrade from BOINC version 4.19 to BOINC 4.45 there is a file that is on a different planet (probably along with its programmer!!)whether this is caused by BOINC or by MS uninstall is a question for the experts.

By the way did you know that the definition on an expert is as follows:

x - is an unknown quantity
spurt - is a drip under pressure!!

Sorry I had a digression!

I'm sorry I didn't answer this post, (and by the way Im back from several days away with part of the system workin I'll get back to that in a later post) Basically I added climate prediction to my new boinc 4.45 and things started working after a fashion. I'll repost the rest (current situation) later.

But thank you for the thought

Well guess what, I tried all of the DNS suggestions none of them worked, I redid all of the firewall enablers (its NIS 2003) that didn't change anything. Then I finally tried the suggestion of get another project to see if its me or SETI, well my old climate prediction bit worked then I tried seti and it started to download, but all of the downloads keep failing, here are but a few of the messages: So we are partially there now what? And whats 'better banner'? I'm away for a few days catch you all later thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

Mr Buck,

Thank you for that, I will now start investigating my firewall which has not changed since I built the computer a year ago, and which looked after the last version of BOINC successfully and which, by the way, I enabled for this version.

I attach the latest set of messages which as you see inform me that in a week or so the system will try to reconnect for me, any system that increments by such an amount caused by an amateur like me pushing buttons too often must be missing a certain quality control element and systems check.

I now ask the fundamental question, is seti@home still interested in getting free computation and electricity from its 5 million subscribers or has it now gone the way of the large multinationals ie I am now so big and important that the small individual customer is merely a pain in the butt!!

Thanks for the support all of you I am still unable to download work units, I have changed the preferences to 4 days. The message that concerns me is the following:
21/06/2005 18:06:09|SETI@home|Master file fetch failed

Its as though reinstalling a new version of BOINC has lost an addressing file somewhere, yet I can see and modify all of my account details. Seems a shame that I can't continue, I was really only interested in SETI so I didn't need BOINC, the classic worked perfectly without a hitch!

When a WU has been validated it will be removed from the database to save disk space etc. Four WUs are sent out and once all four have been returned and validated or three have been returned and validated and the deadline has passed for the fourth then a WU will be eligible to be removed from the database that we see for the results. I am not sure of the time scales for when this database cleanup takes place.

You also mention that you can upload but not download. If uploads are happening then your network connection must be OK. I wonder if you have accidentally set the project to "no new work". Open boinc manager, select the seti@home project and check which buttons are available on the lefthand side. If you see "Allow new work" you must have accidentally stopped it downloading, click on this button to allow the client to download work.

Thank you to all who explained the purging I now understand. However, from the side panel I see that I am set up to receive work (ie 'no new work' showing on the button) but cannot for some reason get any, indeed it is now 3 days without anything: here are the last set of messages: and I am none the wiser!!

...I cannot see any of the past work, even though I have been a seti@home member since 1999.

Here, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=375814, you show SETI BOINC credit of 5,859.25. 5,200.85 credits on computer ID 453566 and 658.40 credits on computer ID 486058. You also show, as of March 15, 2005, 800 SETI@home classic workunits and 8,948 hours SETI@home classic CPU time.

What past work isn't showing?

I used to be able to see all of the past work units on the BOINC system now when I go to my account I see only the last 5 uploaded since I changed versions of BOINC. Moreover, having had a problem and changed the version of BOINC I managed to upload the work units now I don't seem to be able to download anything. I know I missed the deadline thats because I had the problem in the first place.

So all of you clever people out there let me, the poor old man know what it is that I have done wrong.

I suffered the Wanadoo argument through France telecom, I changed versions of BOINC, I have tried proxies as recommended elsewhere and I agree I am a bit dim in the detailed computer knowledge required to fix the problem immediately. I learned computing when operating systems were tape resident and you buttoned in the instructions in hex with punch cards to load the program!! I shall continue to experiment, if you have a constructive recomendation, please feel free to help me out.

I attach the error messages for the last attempt in case they mean anything

Thank you Mikey, I took out the proxy that I had to use when they had the problem with cogent, it sort of works now. I also upgraded to BOINC 4.45 having read some of the other posts. However while I have now been able to send back the completed work units, I appear to be unable to unload anymore work and in looking at my account I cannot see any of the past work, even though I have been a seti@home member since 1999.

I have been unable to send back completed work units or get new one for approximately 1 1/2 weeks now, is there still a problem with wanadoo.fr? I am using a proxie 57.67.8.114 on port 80.
This new BOINC system is frustrating and I'm thinking of scrapping the lot; with the old system I was in the top 6% now there is no communication and BOINC slows my machine down badly.
Whats happening out there?
