When the system locks-up, does pressing the "caps-lock" key cause the caps-lock light on the keyboard to come on/off?

If the light goes on/off, then the CPU is still running, and the lockup is probably due to some form of nasty software failure.

If the Caps-lock light doesn't come on/off, then it 99.999 percent certain that the CPU has stopped executing instructions - and that is a hardware fault/problem/instability.

The only other reason for the caps-lock not responding is another ISR (Interrupt Service Routine) not re-enabling interrupts. Once one hardware interrupt occurs, others are blocked until the first completes. Usually an ISR only executes a handfull of (say 10-20) instructions) before permitting other interrupts. If some ISR code was at fault, systems would crash all the time, not just when busy.

I can verify that it McAfee isn't the sole source of the issue: I'm not running McA, I'm running ZoneAlarm and I've been having lockups for over a week.

Intersting, though, that I've only had them on my AMD system, and never on my Intels, despite having essentially identical software setups.

However, I do think that at least 4 of them constantly run in the background.

Best to set them up so only one is running at any given time.

If you were to try & run all of (or even any of) those programmes at the same time, it'd be a miracle if your computer ran at all.
Only ever run one AV programme at a time, Same goes for spyware programmes.
If a programme says there is a problem, then you can shut it down & run a different one to see if it agrees. Or in the case of odd things happening & nothing being reported, shut down the deafult programme & run one of the other ones.

3) I would look to see what else you are loading. Run something like "windows defender" and see if some site has slipped something in on you (spyware). If you've never run any anti-spyware stuff, you might want to start out with a couple of trial tools. I haven't found one that gets them all the first time.

I found that after downloading for hours and aborting over a dozen work units dated May 28, Pentium Dual and units deadline of May 28 do not calculate. The computer is stuck with zero percentage work done in over 2-3 hours of time. many other units from other dates are also with bugs on my Dual. On the other computers they run fine. They all have installed 5.4.9. Is there a better dowload for Duals?

Anyone with suggestions?

5.15 is the new SE app, It was released to this project last nite. It will replace 5.12 eventually

This is considered a ghost WU. Yes, you will get 0 for it, but it doesn't harm anything. The biggest reason it happens is a network glitch at the time of the download. In fact, the result might even be in the SETI directory. This happens to all of us, at one point or another.
