Rankings... We had them in Classic but not now?
(Message 140165)
Posted 21 Jul 2005 by Christian Seti (user) Post: Am I missing something? We were able to see our own team's "ranking" compared to all SETI participants in the Classic site but I can't see anything like that in the BOINC version. I thought this was a very good feature... it would be a shame to see it go. |

Posted 21 Jul 2005 by Christian Seti (user) Post: Has anyone ever heard about the SETI@home project being available for Apple's Xgrid distributed processing system? For that matter, as this is a basically a distributed processing community, can anyone here point me to a site listing XGrid projects that can be joined publicly like SETI@Home? Thanks. |

What is the change history for BOINC 3.20?
(Message 11008)
Posted 22 Jul 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: Is there a web page that shows the enhancements made between version 3.18 for BOINC-OSX and version 3.20 now available? I feel less motivation to go through the process of upgrading all our clients when there is no documentation to show what has changed. I might add that the lack of documentation generally is really causing me to rethink my dedication to the SETI program. I know it's early days and all, but if even ONE person from the BOINC team bothered to trawl these forums once a week and dash off some quick answers to the most common problems, we'd all be a lot less stressed! |

Forcing server connections- why can't I do it?

Posted 14 Jul 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: Yes, I'm attached to the right project URL. Even if I reboot and then restart BOINC in a terminal window a substantial delay is forshadowed. Here's what I'm getting: 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [---] Starting BOINC client version 3.18 for powerpc-apple-darwin 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [SETI@home] Project prefs: no separate prefs for school; using your defaults 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [SETI@home] Host ID is 13378 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [---] General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 2004-06-25 12:29:33) 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [---] General prefs: no separate prefs for school; using your defaults 2004-07-14 00:26:46 [SETI@home] Deferring communication with project for 1 days, 4 hours, 39 minutes, and 52 seconds So what I'm asking is: how can I force a server connection attempt without waiting (in this case) over a day? |

Forcing server connections- why can't I do it?
(Message 6994)
Posted 12 Jul 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: My laptop moves fairly fluidly between on-line and off-line environments. My BOINC understandably backs off and progressively increases the time between connection attempts when I'm off line. However, if I've reconnected to the Internet and I want to re-start BOINC and force a server connection ( to upload completed WU's and download new ones) I can't seem to do it. I've tried all the various flags listed when you run with the "-help" flag and I still get BOINC stubbornly insisting that it's going to wait 2 or more days before connecting again. When I "top -u" in another terminal window I see that BOINC is only taking up a couple of CPU %, meaning (presumably) that I've run out of WU's and BOINC is just idling until I can get some more. Yes, I've made sure that the BOINC mothership is active- all my other terminals are sucessfully contacting BOINC headquarters and receiving WU's right now. Is there a flag that is supposed to over-ride this timeout? Thanks. |

Only one computer receiving credit for workunits
(Message 2456)
Posted 29 Jun 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: I've added about 10 computers with the same account ID to BOINC and recently went to my account info to check their status. Most are windows, a couple are Macs. All were added around the same time, and I'm sure that they have all recieved, processed and uploaded a number of completed workunits. However, only one computer seems to have any credit assigned to it (the one at the top of the list). The others all list zero. Interestingly, browsing the account details of several other users reveals the same symptom. Is this a bug at BOINC's end? |

Drawing together multiple BOINC clients- admin interface
(Message 1601)
Posted 25 Jun 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: One of the features I have been most keen for is the new client/server model that would allow me to draw together all my workstations running BOINC into an administrative interface to allow me to remotely track their processing status. I can see all the computers I've joined to BOINC in my account details. Cool! However, I thought I would also be able to change those other preferences such as we now have under the BOINC general or project-specific configurations available through the web-interface of each- obviously served at BOINC and setiathome headquarters respectively. Things like time restrictions. Was I wrong to think this, or is this on the BOINC to-do list? |

Cloning Macs via disk images- getting BOINC right
(Message 1597)
Posted 25 Jun 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: With the old seti@home OS-X client, when I wanted to create a disk image which was to be cloned to all my workstations containing SETI@home (using the excellent NetRestore utility from www.bombich.com), I installed and launched seti@home, registered with my account, and then deleted the "workunit.sah" file immediately prior to creation of the disk image. This had the result of ensuring that on each newly cloned workstation (iMacs, eMacs, etc), when the screensaver kicked in, the program was properly configured and proceeded to download a new workunit. So, under the new system, is it merely sufficient to start and attach a project to BOINC and then remove the workunit files from the "projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu" directory prior to the creation of my disk image to ensure my cloned workstations will run BOINC properly (and I suppose the answer to this depends on the answer to a previous question I wrote about whether BOINC can run as a background process independant of any user- ie at the login screen). |

Will the BOINC "auto-update" feature upgrade us to the GUI version?
(Message 1594)
Posted 25 Jun 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: I understand that BOINC is supposed to have some kind of "auto-upgrade" feature. Should I go ahead and install the current non-GUI equipped client on all my workstations and expect that the auto-upgrade process will install GUI capable one when it is available? |

Will BOINC run behind the login screen?
(Message 1589)
Posted 25 Jun 2004 by Christian Seti (user) Post: Is the OS-X BOINC client able to run as a system process on bootup, and not merely a user process engaged once a user is logged in? We have over 100 OS-X clients in a managed client environment, and they spend most of their time at the login screen. Are project workunits downloaded and processed and held with the computer or the user? How can we ensure that computers at the login screen are also BOINCing away? |
