1) Message boards : Number crunching : Do racked server systems work well with BOINC? (Message 745772)

Post:
Individually, they work great. If you mean they are clustered together, such as a Beowulf cluster, then no, it doesn't work with BOINC unless you manufacture your own client that supports your cluster (and good luck with that! LOL).

Thanks..... I saw one that was going for like $475 for each 2 cpu server... Just thought I would ask.

Just to clarify:

If you have 30 servers, they'll work great as 30 individual crunchers.

Whats a good price for a q6600 system?

You dont want a Q6600 processor since that one is consuming a lot of power with the old CPU arcitecture. Get a Q9300 (45nm) instead. In Sweden that processor costs around 375$. You will save money both on power consumption and cooling expenses.

Thanks, Matt. I've got results stuck in the Transfer Queue for over a week now and they stay at about 1.80% completed (??) What's up with that?

Just be patient.. It's because all traffic load... This morning (4 hours ago) everything was looking better, i got 3 new WU and done WU were reported to SETI.. But now something seemed to have happend again.. So just be patient... :)

would it help if everybody stop asking for new work ?

While a noble effort, you have no chance in getting that level of cooperation.

I agree with what I've seen mentioned elsewhere, that the projects need an additional throttle mechanism built into BOINC; a "break glass" that is only performed in dire circumstances... Something that puts a little more control into their hands to get wildly out of control processes back in control quicker.

I'm no network expert, but how about simply firewalling out half of the internet? That might relieve the load on the servers sufficiently that they could achieve some reasonable throughput and clear some of the backlogue. A bit tough on the half that's firewalled, but the chunk of IP addresses allowed through could be changed every few hours to give everyone a chance.

Thats a real good idea! I'm not network expert either but it sounds like a good idea.. If the bottleneck is the servers and not the firewall itself that would work i think.. :)

It might help but as noted elsewhere its not likely to happen.
I have 5 PCs doing BOINC.......I have shut down BOINC on 4 of
the 5 and left just the 1 running BOINC ...my "canary" if you like
......its not much but every little bit will help get things
back to normal.......

I have done the same.. I have 11 PCs running SETI but only one is running SETI right now (right now its not requesting more work). The 10 others is running rosetta until connection problems gets better :) I think that will help reduce the load on the project..

Isn't it possible to turn of the "due date" of the results until the connection problems is resolved. that way one result dont have to be sent out to more computers than neccesary.. Its just a waste of computing power in my eyes...

The servers are most likely being overwhelmed with requests atm.
Give it a day or two (if everything keeps working as it should) and things should look a lot smoother.

Now the upload/download server is taken down .. Shows disabled in the server status.. This evening i have got 2 WU downloaded and still trying to get 4 more.. Have been going like that for 24hours but only recently it got 2 of them dl:ed.. I will not request more work until my computer is out of work again and that will probably be in 24 hours or something since i have Rosetta project too.. Hope the congestion will be fixed :D

By the looks of this page a lot of servers were shutdown.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html
I hope it's not a bad sign :(

My guess is that they are working on the problems.

Looks like that yes.. By the way.. i just got one result now!
Speed 4,5KB/s .. I have had 5 results it has been trying to get since yesterday. And one got downloaded now! I have set the manager to not get more work since i guess i only spam the servers if i try to get more.. The next work unit it will try to get in 2minutes.. And next after that 2 hours.. So lets see what happens :D

The status page says that thumper is down now.... But i got my result anyway.. Since thumper is not involved in sending out the results.. Download of second WU seems to fail... But got one! :D wee ;)

I'm keeping my systems busy with other projects until the people that are not as aware of the problem get their tanks filled, then I'll turn Seti back on.

Same here, Ill let my 10 computers at work do work on other projects until some work are queued up here and connection problems are gone. Maybe on monday i can turn off the other projects and let them empty the work cache, that will make all computers ready to request work from SETI on wednesday or thursday..

OK, I'll support the notion of naming it after a Sun-God, but there are SO many more interesting and obscure variations, How about:

Let me please suggest "Sol" (which happens to be sun in spanish) although I believe (AFAIK) that it is also the astronomical name for our warmth-giver.

Patagonia

"Sol" is also the Swedish word for sun.. =) But i like Helios more :)

I guess it will take them some time to get it up and running to.. And then there might be problems getting work the first day due to everyone trying to connect.. I have paused all my computers for SETI project. Will resume them tomorrow or the day after depending on how the restore goes.. :)

I did "pause" the project so my servers dont spam the project making upload of results impossible..

By the way.. Does anyone know what "RAC:33" on my reply (under my nick) means?
