this is not preferred and vista/7 don't like this setup IIRC

I have been running 5.10.45 under both vista and windows 7without any problems. I just set Boinc to its own directory on a second partition ( E:\Boinc ) and it runs like it is supposed to. I don't really care what vista or windows 7 wants as far as where they think it is supposed to go. I've been running under Win7 64 bit since RC and now under RTM.

I understand that if you want to process wu's with a GPU that the 6xx versions will detect the Nvidia and I think now the ATI cards. And it has been trial and error with each version to get that working as well as scheduling, etc. I have both ATI and Nvidia capable cards BUT DON'T wish to process with them. So I stay with the version of Boinc that has NO problems...

Well I just started doing work a couple of days ago to see what seti has been up to and guess I am really lacking. I just looked at some of mine that have been validated and here's one..

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=523825753

Not a nice surprise to notice that I'm losing credits and also short changing my wingman as well. I've set the system to NNW so this ends here as soon as the last 6 units run out.

As to the other fellow that might be running into this same situation maybe he's a returning seti person like me.... Glad I came to the message base as soon as I did and saw this message.

My reason for using 5.10.45 is because #1 I want all my boinc files in one location for easy backups (not chasing over multiple partitions) and #2 I've been watching the 6.xx versions seemingly changing weekly/monthly and constant problems with scheduling, etc. It works for me and doesn't effect any other projects I participate in. Will need to do an reassessment on whether or not running seti is a good idea again... In the meantime I've stopped requesting new work.

/edit ... optimized clients when I stopped were so confusing that I never was sure what was the right one for my system. I guess for the time being that is a mute point unless I bite the bullet and go to 6.xx. <sigh>

Wow, that version of Boinc came out in August 2005.

Ya gotta admire that it's running as seamlessly as it is.

And just exactly what is the problem with this version of boinc? I still use it here because 6xx has had nothing but problems from day one!

So . . . Corsair or no?

I've used Corsair memory here for a number of years and I've never had any problems with any of their products.

PS.. the link someone posted to TigerDirect's "How To" video is an excellent video. Only thing he left out was putting the screws on the backside of the hard drive and DVD burner. (Need to take the other side cover off)

So, what you're saying here is that there can be no appeal for a "lighter sentence"? I find that to be very un-democratic like.

I think Eric has made it clear what has happened and why the admins responded in the manner they did. I'm perfectly satisfied that the Seti@home admins were made aware of a problem, throughly researched it and took what they deemed appropriate action.

I think you've made you case and its been rejected by the powers that be. I think its time you accept the decisions that were made. Like it or not this isn't our board. We don't pay all the bills and we are certainly not in charge. If we are unhappy with the way things are done here we can always feel free to do something else. No one has my computers firmly attached to here.

Fighting for my friends, because I can.

I think you can fight all you want, but it will be to no avail. The admins are in charge of this board, they did what they had to do. It doesn't matter if it was fair or not. They are in charge and are doing what they think needs to be done. "Guilt by Association" does come into play here. Those that read the information and failed to notify the proper authorities also failed in their responsiblities. I'm not going to second guess the admins here on why some were allowed to continue while others were banned. Its their board, they make up the rules they saw the evidence, and they are the ones who are ultimately responsible.

I also think we ought to be thankful that they were made aware of this breach and took steps to correct the situation. And we should be very glad they decided that there were more good people here than a handfull of bad ones and therefore left the forums open to us.

One last thing. I do think that anyone's private/personal information that was comprimised should be notified in a private email/message and allow them to make whatever changes are neccessary to safeguard their information ASAP.

You also validate a very good point. You have your own forums and you decide what the rules are as well as the punishment. Why should the seti admins not be entitled to the same.

I am truely amazed that things have gotten so darn messed up over here. It not like Matt and the guys have all the money in the world or time to watch every thing that goes on here. Back when I started in 1999 we had very few of the luxuries we have now. Mostly a few boards to post in, and they seemed to crash more than they stayed up. Knowing that none of us alive might have a chance to actually get that signal, with the advent of Boinc the administration opened up a considerable amount of forums for us so that we, as a community could come together and work with each other to solve problems and/or just get to know each other. The popularity is such that on their shoestring budget they allowed some of the people here to take an active role in helping moderate the boards.

Once again human nature has shown us that while there are many good folks out there that would do anything to help, there are also those that seem to think they are priviledged and abuse the trust that was placed in them. Not only did they abuse that trust that was given to them they "MAY" have committed a grievious crime in the process. This whole escapade has the pontiential to not only ruin the ruputation of the administtration, but the validity of anything done here.

People are upset because friends are now banned, others are upset because they were abused on the boards, still others have had their personal information released in the wild. Maybe everyone really does have a beef with this whole mess, but I think everyone needs to stand back, take a breather and look at the whole picture. This has the potential to destroy all the hard work done by so many people, least of all the project admins and scientists. It could quite easily come to a point where the project, the university don't need this type of negative view of the whole situation and decide to close things down and make it a very private enterprise (research project) with no imput for any of the general public. In which case we all LOSE....... At the very least of which they could shut down all the forums to try to not have this sort of thing happen again.

With as much as everyone has pushed over the years for project scientists and admins to be an active part in this endevor we will lose that unique perspective of what is actually going on in the project.

This could very well be just one more example of a few bad apples spoiling the whole bushell for the rest of us. Rather than fighting amoungst ourselves and trying to crusify those that are responsible, we need to see what was done, how it can be avoided in the future and quite possibly what can we do as a community to try and salavge what good reputation this project has and try to make it a model for all the others out there that follow our example.

Just my personal opinion. Hopefully shared by enough others to make a difference.

Modifying the app_info file is not enough. The app_info file is used to inform the download server that the computer is capable of doing that type of work and you have suitable apps in place. If the apps haven't been installed then the data is downloaded but with no app in place.... CRASH.

Well since Seti, who was once my primary account is now a backup account in case einstein is down I'll abort the worklunit and let both my wingman and I off the hook. I really don't want to waste a week of my computer time doing a workunit that may not even get credit until sometime in Oct. Best that he and I are both out and maybe it can be assigned to others that are prepared for this eventuality.

It's really a shame as the austropulse work seems to tie in with einstein's type of scientific work and I think it would be reall nice to have that here and possibly a way to help obtain the desperate needed funging Matt and the guys need to keep thing running.

I got an astropulse unit here a couple hours ago and I'm running the stock app. Looks like my wingman got it with the optimised client. Don't know who this is as its listed As.

Not sure what you mean by a ghost wu. That mean the optimized client isn't goign to process it?

I just got an astropulse wu on one of my other computers that's saying 110 hours to completion. I guess that will last that system until einstein is back up....

While debating in the BOINC forums about putting a site together that combined all the projects, I found out a few things...

Saw your flash stats page and thought it was pretty good. Then saw Dr. S.E.T.I's link to your website and thought the videos were terrific. Sent an email to you through the site and when it was sent it took me to Yahoo. Not sure if you got it or not. Had a couple of questions so if you did not get the email let me know and I'll send you a PM.

Do I really strike you as the type of person who feels guilt over actions that took place well before I was born?

As an upfront I have read this entire thread and it has been interesting how the topic has changed. With that in mind I have to agree with you on your opinion. You may have expressed it a bit more stongly than I would as to the Iraq war. Whatever the reasons (legitmate or otherwise) if you are going to do something then do it and finish it. If the media and liberal democrates had spent more time talking and showing what "good" was being done rather than looking for ever little thing that was "wrong" in their opinion and stopped giving the terrorists incinatives maybe this would have already been over with.

Give me the facts, tell me both sides of the story and let me decide what I think is right or wrong. I'm tired of the constant adversarial point being shoved down my throat all the time. (just like political correctness run amok)

And to the "guilt over actions statement", not only that but before my immigrant ancestors came to this country for a better life for them and their off spring. Both peoples had wrongs done to them. As a country we have admitted it and have tried to change, but I don't owe anyone an apology or retribution for something that neither I nor my ancestors had any part of.

[edit] And as to the little green men ..... I beleive they've been here and are smarter than we are. They already know that if they show themselves some fool human with a gun will shoot first and say hello later.[/edit]

Have you updated your BOINC installation recently?

The is a fairly new message, introduced with BOINC v5.10.30: it's not really an error message at all, more like a warning signal. I think it's an attempt to work round the Vista 'fast shutdown' "feature", but obviously the message is there for Win XP users too.

The old wording used to suggest you consider resetting the BOINC project, but don't do that, whatever you do! Rebooting the computer is much safer. I suggest you just keep an eye on things, but leave it alone for now. Let us know what else you see.

I'd just recently upgraded to the 45 version.... Noticed some other error messages that started popping up in windows today and now I'm thinking it may be from somewhere else. Will keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the reply so soon.

I've been getting errors occasionaly from my wireless software and it might have to do with Boinc loadign before my wireless connection is established.
