Of course, railroad miles do not translate equally to highway miles. In a few places, the road is parallel to the tracks. Most of the way, however, the road forms the legs of right triangles while the track is the hypotenuse. Long story short, by the time I get home, it's been 8.37 hours, all of it at time and a half.

Half an hour later, the phone rings, at 2:30 for a 5:00 pickup. Don't want to go back to sleep and don't want a parking ticket (left the van in the street; there's no parking on all city streets 2-5 am), so I decide to go out early and get an early breakfast at Denny's. Finish that and am just calling in my start trip and they call and say it's canceled, but they'll put me back on the board in my original position. Surprisingly, I get another call while I'm still there, for a 6:15 pickup. I kill another hour in the warmth of the restaurant (it's 18F outside), then arrive half an hour early... and wait until the crew shows up over an hour late. Another hour driving, the usual wait for them to get the train ready and call in, and a surprisingly short wait for the dispatcher to give them a signal. I take the scenic route back to my van partner's house, but he's not answering the phone, so I go home, take my sleeping pill, and silence the phone. I sleep well. Now waiting for another call. I'm second out. Any time worked on Thanksgiving is overtime.

I move one lane left. Guy moves up and sits on the truck's tail. Meanwhile, truck speeds up a tad so I'm no longer gaining on it, which was the only reason I moved over. Guy has plenty of room to move left in front of me but finally cuts right instead. Sadly, he was tame compared to some other maniacs out there.

However, I didn't get the chance to have any of the above. More than two hours past the pickup time (and no sign of the train or crew), they called and said my trip was canceled. They put me on another trip starting at the same place, but with a different destination. Then I just went home... and discovered I hadn't shut off the oven after baking a frozen Dutch apple pie. The next night, I could have gone to any of several other Mexican joints, but I didn't get hungry until they were all closed (even Taco Hell). When I got home from that trip at 5 in the morning, I took my sleeping pill and reheated a big plateful of leftover Chinese food.

Car ahead and car to right are going about the same speed (probably a couple mph under the limit for no good reason). I slow down to get behind the car on the right. Just as I'm about to have room, the 3 or 4 cars behind me all switch to the right and speed up, blocking me from it. Right about then, the car ahead speeds up, but it's too late to get ahead of the car on the right and make my turn safely. None of the ones who were behind will let me in, even when I signal.
