Why use both, turn the screen saver off...

"active use -> screen saver -> monitor off" should work. "don't do that" is NOT a solution to the problem, so don't suggest it again. do you work for microsoft?

Well, maybe Scott only want to crunch for Seti when the Screensaver is up?

it's "crunching" all the time. the issue is the screensaver is preventing monitor shutoff, but it didn't when running seti@home classic.

i'm running win2k. i have "display properties/screen saver" set to BOINC after 5 minutes, and "display properties/energy saving features of monitor/power" set to turn off the monitor after 20 minutes. the monitor never turns off. i had the same settings with seti@home, and the monitor did shut off. any ideas?

Condor41, are you running the screensaver or "show graphics"? Most of the time, thats the cause of crashes. Usually the WU gets an error (like 0xC0000005) but sometimes the system crashes. Its from buggy video drivers, BOINC/Seti uses opengl and not all drivers recover gracefully from errors.

To test this, try running without graphics - change the screensaver to "none" or "blank" and don't do "show graphics". Run that way for a couple of WU's and see if you have any more problems.

my machine's display also gets hung sometimes by the 3-d screensaver. i switched to "minimalist" and we'll see what happens. by the way, when i change preferences with the web site, it says the new settings take effect next time BOINC talks to the server or the client sends an update command. how do i send an update command?

the system is an ASUS P3BF motherboard, PIII/850, 384M RAM. graphics via matrox G400 with AGP set to 1X due to timing incompatibilities between G400 and ASUS. windows 2000 with all updates, and running the latest WHQL matrox drivers.

the only other thing i run that uses opengl is quake II.
