Hey you're right, it's getting better now, it's downloading another 8 now! (pressed update :D)

It'll get there :D

Crossing my fingers, that Berkeley is going to stay online for a while now ;)

There hasn't been a statistics export since the 24th, could it be possible to give the export routine a go?

Choices, choices ;)

Now I get a new task every time one is complete, tomorrow I hope to get 2 tasks.. etc?

I've done some digging, this system reported 10 errors. Thus I have re-installed everything, done some rebooting here and there.. and It looks OK now, got 4 wu's that it is processing correctly (it's a quad core). Hope everything goes well, and my allotment will go up before Berkeley goes off-line (for me/us) again.

Thanx for the input!

But I do have one small suggestion. With the current structure of about 50% off-line, wouldn't it be nice if the allotment of "suspicious" clients would go up faster when they are performing correctly (again)?

PS: The reason my computers are not visible is that they are company computers (and before you start worrying, I own the company ;)

I (finally) got my computer back after is was gone for three months for repair.

Offcourse I immediately reactivated Boinc to start crunching again.. and now I only get one task a day. Rats, I know that I haven't returned some results because of the system crash, but isn't this a bit harsh? A fresh and new computer gets more tasks then this computer does :(

If Berkeley would be normally available every day I would suspect that this system would get back to it's normal allotment quite fast. But with the resent structure of several days off-line I'm afraid it may take many weeks before this computer can crunch again what it really can crunch.

Or is there something else wrong? At my end, at Berkeley's end?

Congratulations to GPU Users Group for getting into the third place in RAC worldwide!

Those guys really are a "rising star"! Just a year ago they/you weren't even in the top 200 and now you are in 54, and RAC they/you also have risen about 50 places!

[edit]
And just in time to edit: also congratulations on breaching the 1,000,000 RAC barier!

I have no idea how much resources are gone during the new 'server outage schedule' with stats-requests, but I may have some ideas about it:

1) The export (in /stats/)
I think you (guys) already thought of this, but I'll mention it, just to be safe. As far as I can see the '29th export' was the last complete one, after the systems went down. But there was a '30th export' with some very marginal new data. It might be a good idea to also completely lock down the export routine in your 'server outage schedule' (no resources lost on creating the export, no bandwidth lost with all those stats guys downloading the new info etc.. ;) )

2) caching the Berkeley-stats-pages
As far as I know the 'userw-data' has a caching of two hours, the team, hosts and user stats have a similar caching system. The various "personal stats pages" are real time. When the 'server outage schedule' kicks in, could caching be set to "indefinitely"? And can the personal stats be cached as well (no use in updating a page when you know the result is the same)?

And as always thanks for the info :)

Best regards,

Eesger

PS: I really hope there is some real vacation in your staycation, you've earned it..

Anyway, happy to see this going again (hope the stats export will kick in as well again tonight)

OW, and as always: thanx for the update :)

As with so many things, to much of anything can't be good.. a little of everything sounds much better. Try and find the mix in it all and try and keep anything from getting an obsession..

PS: with what I am reading I realise that I haven't been where you are/have been.. but "obsessiveness" is something I can relate to.. and the text above is something I (try to) adhere to.

I took a look also, my oldest one is from last year! (let's see if the next one will time out also :p)

I'm a bit weary of using software that is in test..

I too have the same 'HTTP error' messages, furthermore, finished SETI wu's upload fine and the reporting of tasks goes fine also. I did need to reset another project (FreeHAL), don't know if there is any relation.

This post was a good one! => performing a 'ipconfig / flushdns' did the job for me!

It is quite difficult to correctly figure out what the performance of a GPU is via the 'top machines'..

I thank you all for your input, I have found a cheap GT 240 with 512Mb GDDR5 which should do fine (I hope ;)
77) Message boards : Number crunching : Low power crunchin'? (Message 987455)
Posted 8 Apr 2010 by Profile S@NL - Eesger - www.knoop.nl
Post:
I guess I have also 'low power cruncher'.

It depend how you interpret this.

My PCs..
1) AMD Athlon 600 - ~ 60 W - RAC of maybe ~ 40.
2) AMD Athlon XP-M 1400+ - ~ 80 W - RAC of maybe ~ 80.
3) AMD Athlon64 3200+ - ~ 160 W - RAC of maybe ~ 400.
4) Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700 @ 3.14 GHz - ~ 215 W - RAC of ~ 5,500.
5) Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700 @ 3.14 GHz with OCed GTX260-216 (only GPU calculation) - ~ 260 W - RAC of ~ 15,000.
6) Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700 @ 3.14 GHz with OCed GTX260-216 - ~ 385 W - RAC of ~ 20,500.
7) AMD PhenomII X4 940 BE with 4x OCed GTX260-216 use ~ 700 W and have a RAC of ~ 65,000.

Which machine have the best RAC/wattage? ;-)

In RAC / Watt (~ credits per day per Watt)
1) ___40/ 60 = _0.667 RAC/W
2) ___80/ 80 = _1.000 RAC/W
3) __400/160 = _2.500 RAC/W
4) _5500/215 = 25.582 RAC/W
5) 15000/260 = 57.692 RAC/W
6) 20500/385 = 53.247 RAC/W
7) 65000/700 = 92.857 RAC/W <= winner! ;)

For a good RAC/W machine that doesn't consume a lot of power, a GT240 might be a good idea. I am going buying one.. it consumes about 70 Watts, a GT250 takes more then twice that but does it produce more then twice as much results?

A small calculation on your top machine:
I also have a X4 940, it produces a RAC of about 3,600. Asuming GPU feeding will cost CPU production, I'll asume that your GPU's do (65,000 - 3,000) / 4 = 15,500.
That one has a TDP of 182 Watts, asuming your system takes about 125 Watts, it leaves 145 Watts for each card. Resulting in 15,500 / 145 = 107 RAC/W for each card. I have red that the GT240 on full SETI crunching takes about 50 Watts, I have heard that it should do a RAC of about 3,500 - 4,000, that'll be 3,750 / 50 = 75 RAC/W.

"Conclusion":
It looks like the best RAC/W will be obtained with the most masive rig. The basis of the rig (MB,PSU,CPU) take the RAC/W down, the GPU's have the best score, also the most powerfull GPU also seems to have the best RAC/W.
Therefore the best RAC/W seems to be with the rig with as much as possible of the most powerfull GPU's.

So how do you define "Low power crunchin"? The best RAC/W? or the least power consumtion.. (an Intel Atom?)

We seem to go a bit off topic (but I get the distinct impression the difference is delegable for SETI@HOME, therefore the cheapest would suffice..?)

ATI.. haven't paid attention enough I see, there is SETI@HOME ATI-crunching possible, this is the only link I could find. It seems to be just starting out for SETI@HOME.. and only for AP (which is all but abundantly available).. so I think ATI is to early to invest in for S@H (also keeping in mind the mentioned CUDA card only costs about € 75 and uses about 70 Watts tops)

Ehm.. in other words, purly speaking in SETI-performance, it will not be worth the money.. (spending on more/faster memory)?

I am thinking of buying an GT 240, it's power consumption is quite low (max 70 Watt, so that I won't need to buy an new PSU).

But what would the difference in "SETI-performance" be between:

- DDR5 with 512Mb
- DDR3 with 1Gb
- GDDR5 with 1Gb

There is some price difference, but would it be worth it "SETI wise"?
