1) Questions and Answers : Windows : URL of other Projects? (Message 12922)

I like Berkely (birthplace of 'free speech' and the freedom of information movement), but don't like the team handling this project.

I'm sure it will get better 'soon'... but really have lost interest.

I'm going back to 'Folding' unless there is another steller type project that DOESN"T require my constant attention and 'retry, retry, retry, retry' input to insure WU availabilty.

Afraid to say I'm no longer interested in this (obviously ALIEN) attempt to guage the LIMITS of human patience, tolerance, and what Humans consider an 'acceptable amount of information'.

'They' recommend we have alternate projects in case WUs become unavailable, but I can't find a link anywhere except 'predicter'... which also appears to have multiple 'beta-test' type problems.

So where do I send a donation? If everyone sends a buck or two, then 'Budget' shouldn't be a problem.

Please post a 'donation'link.

We're very giving people... a buck or two won't hurt any of us.

> If they had a lot of money and resources they

Non-sequiter... and an illuminating comment.

The computer power being offered is not available ANYWHERE on this planet.

Therefore, the idea that 'they' are ONLY doing this because they can't afford to purchase a computer with the same computational power of 50,000 P4 2.8Ghz computers is aburd...

> If you read the web site they have a very good explanation of what is going
> on,

True, the information is a little bit more available than before... but the information OFFERED still ain't equell to what is the HUGE amount of computational power being offered for FREE!

And just for Logics sake... and to reiterate my position... there is no mention of a BUDGETARY shortfall on the information page.

TELL us you need $100,000... and you'll GET a $100,000!

> so chill out.

So go to hell.

Of course! Personally, I BELIEVE the truth is 'out there'.

But I'm beginning to BELIEVE that this project was designed to test the limits of human patience.

Correction: "You will need MEGA patience, understanding, and gullibility!"

If you're interested in donating your computer time... this particular project is NOT the place.

If you're interested in LEARNING and HELPING to increase knowledge in the area of TESTING the LIMITS of HUMAN compasion, short-sightedness, and tolerance for ERROR... then this IS the place!

But be forewarned... this project is run by ALIENS!

(It's the ONLY explanation that makes any sense!)

The worst problem I've encountered with BOINC is not keeping us updated with information. To read the 'update' page, you'd think things have been going rather smoothly since June 22, with only an occasional downtime for a 'few hours'.

Hope SETI finds that ETI... they could sure use some help with this extensively tested Beta.

Please add the following to the list of problems:

SO THE ANSWER IS 413?

Great answer... what does it mean?!?

What it REALLY MEANS IS "Thanks for the answer. I would like to point out that this is contary to what is written on http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/intro_user.php:

This is a classic example of "If you don't know... then I ain't gonna tell you till you beg... cuz I don't really know either" mentality.

Look, all we want to do is help ya'll.

But you're forcing us to learn a whole new set of 'rules', languages, etc.

What was the Beta for... didn't you learn anything?!?

1. Stupid server-clinet relationship... RPC this, RPC that. My stupid client is wasting MY TIME and BANDWIDTH asking for crap that will be denied because 'it's too soon'. It wastes the SERVERS TIME TOO!

It's also causing us a lot of needless anxiety because we DO want to help, but can't get work units to do the crunching.

Didn't you guys check ANYTHING before launching this project?!

2. Look at the last two lines... I've got TWO DAYS WORTH of addition and subtraction errors... but this is the most sad.

3. Why doesn't the client even save my preferences locally?!? If I tell the thing to operate ALL THE TIME and DON'T CONNECT... then I MEAN IT!!! When I re-boot it goes back to "I'll do what I want when I want" mode.

I'm just about ready to go back to 'folding'.

Correct! And each time he starts BOINC a NEW child process will start. (I had 5 of them running...)

Check the STDERR.txt file... you will see that BOINC is causing an invalid exception error... and shutting itself down. It's probably writing somewhere that isn't allowed. I have the same problem at work.

Um, you mean it's been down since 8am CST... and is still down.

And on my home computer it does not mention anything about the Project being down.
