That is exactly what I am going to do when one of my machines finishes the existing SETI work. My other machine will keep running SETI until April 1st.

For real. My first computer running SETI was a home built IBM compatible with with a 8088 processor.
Now running two machines with quad cores.

Have paused other projects to get my remaining SETI jobs done first.

One more update - thanks for the tip about the firewall - checked that and boinc is listed as an exception.

there seems to be some sort of incompatability problem with my motherboard bios. thought I had everything fixed and it started up again.

ran a scan on the register but found no errors. uninstalled and installed AGAIN. if this does not stop it I am back to SETI Classic - again

Another update = started doing it again. It seems one of my oldest son's friends thinks he is a computer expert and without my knowledge went into the BIOS and mucked up the settings. Specifically, I have a CD reader and DVD burner. This 'expert' set the devices to AUTO rather than MODE 4 which is what is required with my particular units in order to function properly.

Evidently this was the root cause of the entire computer freezing - not Norton Auto Protect. I discovered this by performing a step by step analysis, disabiling various programs and waiting to see if it happened again. Finally when NOTHING was running it was still doing it - there BIOS or a physical problem (cables not seated) was the cause.

So far so good.

Just an update - I turned off Norton Auto-protect and so far seems to be working much better. Seems this all started after a recent Norton update.

Every 2 minutes or so BOINC will lock up the machine and hang for about 30 seconds. XP Pro with SP2. Messages say "SETI@home - 2004-11-26 22:10:26 - Result 09mr04aa.8844.8657.123566.218_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file:

I have reset the project again and again.

Any idea what is going on.

Oh - I don't use a screen saver, I have unloaded the program - reloaded and still get the same results.
