... Most likely, the real reason for the release is because a large number of corporate clients will not upgrade their machines until the new target O/S is at least SP1.

And so this is a "mini-SP" rushed out as early as possible without being too embarrassing to clear a corporate 'tick-box' to boost sales...

[/Marketing cynicism on]

But what essential feature does Windows Vista offer that is not already available with WinXP or even other existing OSes?

Or is it really 'that much' "faster" or "better"?

All good fun.

Happy crunchin',
Martin

The only feature I've heard of so far is breaking (or at least bending) Boinc and device drivers. I'll stay WinXP, Win2K, and Linux until they show me a "killer app". (I've been thinking about buying a couple of spare XP OEM licenses while they are still available, just to have them).

This is a computer (one of mine) that almost exactly matches that spec, it's a Q6600 on an Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi, it's got a Zalman 9700 on it in an Antec P180B case with a TruePower 650 PS and 2G of GSkill DDR2 800 ram locked at 800. The CPU is clocked at 3GHz right now. Temps are from 55 to 47 across the 4 cores using Coretemp, so I could probably push it slightly more.

-Dave

Excellent, thanks Dave. Gives me an idea of what to use as a target. Also lets me know the G.Skill DDR2 800 memory will work with it (not on ASUS recomended memory list) as that is what I have sitting around. Now if UPS would just get here.

Just seen reports that MS are to release a beta SP1 for Vista, and a SP3 for XP.

Vista Team Blog
MS Technet Home

Everything I have read about Vista SP1 seems to indicate that it is just a security roll-up (no new functionality). Most likely, the real reason for the release is because a large number of corporate clients will not upgrade their machines until the new target O/S is at least SP1.

I'd go with the Q6600. At least on the Asus mobos I have been using, I have been having better sucess OCing by keeping the cpu multi down and the fsb up rather than the other way 'round. So being able to up the multi on the QX6600 may not be worth much on some systems.

Getting ready to build a couple machines. These will be work machines so no overclocking. $279.00 - core 2 quad q6600 does seem like the way to go, and as always they will be built on Asus. Thanks

Just bought an ASUS P5B Deluxe and a Q6600. Ought to be faster than my P4-D. Any notions what this will do on air with a good copper core/heatpipe cooler?

I know this subject has come up a LOT of times. I sucessfully did it.

Fedora 7 (commandline only)
Boinc 5.8.16

It works great. Only limitation is that I had to use a 2gb memory chip. For a diskless installation without PXE its still a little expensive.

Anyone out there know of a resonable way to make an image of a memory stick that can be X-fered to another Memory chip? and maybe have some info on services and packedges I can remove? I want to try and fit this onto a small chip, I only use ~%50 of the chip, but Fedora wasnt to happy with a smaller chip.

Try it with DSL (or DSL Not).

No. boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe, but that's normal, right?
And it should not matter that there's hyperthreading, so that I crunch 2 WUs at the same time. Right?
Usually, I just let the 2 icons sit there and say to myself, it's stupid for 2 to show up, lol.
Once or twice I have exited one of them, so that I only see one icon.

Got me puzzled. You are correct on both counts. So I can't figure how you could get an extra icon without another process running. Oh well, mebbe someone will figure it out.

The Boinc manager has a little quick to it:
* When you start it up it puts an icon down below like you would expect.
* If you close it with a click on the "x" or a File/Close Window command, the icon remains. The task is just minimized and hidden.
* Where the Manager has a problem, is that while most tasks check to see if there is a previous copy running before they start, the Boinc Manager does not- it starts a second copy. Close that one with an "X or a close window, now you have 2 icons showing.
* If previous installations placed start-up short-cuts in different places, you could be starting x numbers of copies when you boot up.
* You might try searching for "BOINC Manager" and see how many copies you find where. If you are running Boinc as a service, none should be in ../Startup directories.
* Note- one more thing. With some versions of Boinc the icon remains after the task is closed and ended - until the mouse is moved over the icon. It then disappears.

ahh well, we've all had 'em at one time. Five years down the road you go to reuse a salvaged part from the machine, that's been sitting at the back of the shed for two years, and find:
- flaky hard drive that won't format properly,
- one dodgy stick of ram
- dodgy device drivers that have just now been updated to work
- cable with a hole in it
....

A cable with a hole in it? I hate it when the electrons leak out!

Sarge, SpeedFan works on my IBM notebook, but not on my Dell notebook, like that's a big surprise. ;)

So like Astro said, it may or may not work for you.

Hmmm...

Did you try checking the box in the config dialog for Dell compatability, that worked on the Latitude I have crunching.

Alinator

I use Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) on my Dell Inspiron. It works nicely on that platform. Notebook Hardware Control
The free version does what I want (CPU performance settings, temps, fan speeds).

I'm all for 'uping' the minimum BOINC version, but I think it should be set lower... to something like v4.45. After all, some people are still having proxy issues with the newer version (I think it's when they went to libcurl but I could be mistaken) and it's not their fault the newer clients don't work for them.

I keep seeing this statement being repeated, but I never see an exchange like:

Q Why can't my machine communicate with a BOINC server?
A Are you behind a proxy server?
Q Yes
A Have you tried v4.45?
Q No - not yet
Q Yes - that fixed it. Thanks.

[at least not in Number Crunching. Maybe I should lurk in Q&A more, LOL]

So I'd really like a sysadmin, running a farm behind one of the proxy servers that were genuinely problematical in the early days, to post that they have tried the later versions and this is still a problem: they really do have to go on using 4.45 or whatever.

Otherwise, it's always "some people", never "I'm", still having proxy problems. That's one of the indicators of an Urban Myth.

There have been a lot of people in the Boinc Alpha group trying to make the newer versions (5.10.13+) work behind a proxy, but last I heard they were still having problems.

I couldn't even get 5.10.19 to install as a service. Not to mention, the boinc website (where one gets these versions) is down at the moment.

They been kicking the problems with 5.10.19 as a service around in the Boinc Alpha forum- as far as I can tell, no one's gotten it to work. I would hold off for 5.10.20.

You may need to upgrade that cpu cooler, I reccomend the Thermaltake Big Typhoon.
Is XP seeing all 4 cores in task manager? If so, you need to fix your preference selection in Seti to allow 4 cores in Boinc.

um... I don't know how to say this... but I've just been a complete idiot.. live on stage, in front of the whole world... open mouth and insert foot time!

Only forgot to reconnect the bloody fan! [red]>blush<[/red]

Stopped boinc, quickly opened case, and plugged it in... now cpu temp is sitting at a nice 30C, still at x6 but I'll start playing with it. I have plenty of fans in the case so at least there was a good cross current.

Now Voltage reports 1.312 so need to up that a bit, could see cpuz showing that it was trying to go back to 8x but then dropping back to 6x. clever stuff. I don't think it's done any damage, computer worked continuously throughout!

Most BIOS's include a setting (usually in the power management section) that will be "shutdown on CPU fan fail" or some such. I always make sure it is on (says the guy that destroyed a P4 a few years back with the same stunt you pulled).

For what it's worth,
Posting in some cryptic language (god forgive that i mention nick names here... like Alinator...) are showing a behaviour of starting to shorten things, or creating their own shortcuts for usually used stuff..

Those kinda shortcuts might make sense to long term users.... (i count myself into that group ) though i have some issues to follow those kind of self created short cut meanings... that is NOT netiquette too ...

Should it be an idee to make a list of these shortcuts/acronyms (WIKI,FAQ or....)so that everyone can see what someone, using these shortcuts/acronyms, means?

For myself, I know the most commom shortcuts/acronyms, or can guess what the meaning is. But sometimes I think: "What the heck he/she is talking about?" :-(

Paul

As a note- If you do not understand a term, you can highlight it, right click, and select Google Search for that item. The search will open in a new window/tab.

Some time ago, I have tried some different solutions as MacOS was not supported at CPDN.

First I have tested Parallels (VM) had some perfomance issues which locked up sometimes MacOS and the CPDN and SETI perfomance was bad. But this problems are solved now with Parallels Version 3.x.

Next step was Wine. There was some problems with the OpenGL and graphics libs, which was required for CPDN. So I tried SETI, MalariaControl and LHC, but the perfomance for some applications was very bad, and for other applications the performance was OK.
A big drawback was the problem, that the BOINC client on the host is listening to the GUI_PRC port. So the other BOINC client could not listen on the same port. So I have used a older version, which I could change the port and use the boinccmd tool to connect to this BOINC client. The BOINC manager had the problem, that the GUI PRC port was not changeable. There was some older BOINC clients which had this GUI RPC port feature, at some releases the feature was removed, and I am not shure, if it is included in the 5.8.x and 5.10.x releases.

With CrossOver (a comercial Wine implementation for several OSes), I got a good perfomance and CPDN ran with the complete graphics stuff. But, the CPU time counting did not worked. There is a 60 day test also available at there site.

I think, you have go to try out if wine or one of the different VM soultuions, like the other posters has written, would work and gave you a acceptable perfomance.

VMware performance is very good. It can be set to favor host or virtual performance.

What didn't I account for? Surely you can't say internet congestion at the time I did the tests. I ran for six months with 2.9mbit before I decided to do a clean install with no updates and now that was six months ago, and I've been getting my full speed ever since. It wasn't just one one machine, so it can't be NIC drivers. I have six computers in my house, all with different hardware and different NICs/drivers and they all show the same results--updates: 2.9mbit, no updates: 6.8+

Set the clock back to before the end of support date before an installation and all works fine.

And as for "what does it matter if it only goes 2.9mbit?".. I'm paying for 6mbit internet, so I want to be able to use it all. I can't get a discount for only being able to go half of that speed.

I'm behind a NAT firewall, and I don't go to many sites at all..pretty much just clean, trusted, safe ones, so I don't need updates. I do any of my secure web browsing on Linux which also has a software firewall. I'd say I'm pretty well covered.

There is something "goofy" about Win2K. I use it on one of my machines as a back-up file server. Most times it is fine, but about once a week, it will decide to limit the ethernet throughput to about 10% of capacity. Re-Boot and it is fine again for a few days. It get real noticeable when you are moving a 10 GB back-up file across the network.
