My Computer Builds And Other Projects
(Message 1758891)
Posted 24 Jan 2016 by Silverdude Post: On the topic of electricity rates, South Korea has to be the worst. They operate on a tiered system where you pay more for using more power. I can't read my bill because I don't read Hangul, but for the past few months I've been paying around a million won for power, which can be between $850-950 depending upon the exchange rate! I'll be moving to Maryland in a few months on military orders, so I'm eagerly looking forward to paying significantly less to crunch WUs :-) |

RAC flatlined... no clue why
(Message 1564783)
Posted 29 Aug 2014 by Silverdude Post: Huh. Yeah I see now on the stats page that I have 475 pending validation. Wow! I need a faster wingman I guess ;-) BTW yes I was referring to the Show Host Average graph in BOINC, which always seemed reliable to me. Grant- would that be a good excuse to add another system to your collection? Thanks for the feedback guys. |

Posted 29 Aug 2014 by Silverdude Post: Greetings all. Well I've been observing my new system's daily status, and it has been pounding away on work units like a champ. Until yesterday, it seems. For the past day or two it looks like I may not be getting any credit for work being done, but I wouldn't know why. I checked the BOINC event log, but it hasn't recorded anything out of the ordinary (just ordinary WU downloads, starts, and finishes). The project tasks list has been updating regularly, and I'm apparently still processing lots of WUs. Anyone have any ideas of what might be happening, or at least what I can do to keep troubleshooting? Thanks for any help. |

Posted 27 Aug 2014 by Silverdude Post: I guess this is the spot to brag! I brought this beast online a few weeks ago after years of laptop-only crunching. Very much money went into this thing, but as you can see there's still room for improvement/extra hardware! Included are 2 Xeon E5-2690 V2s (20 cores, 40 threads), a 1250 W Seasonic PSU, 2 8GB Crucial ECC DIMMs, 2 EVGA GTX 780Ti Superclocked GPUs in SLI, 2 Samsung 850 Pro SSDs in RAID 1, and a Blu-Ray burner, all running on an ASUS Z9 P8-DE WS motherboard. |

Question about GPU usage and optimized apps
(Message 1558712)
Posted 18 Aug 2014 by Silverdude Post: Hey everyone! I built a new system recently with a pair of GTX 780 TIs in it, but GPU-Z is saying they're only about 25% utilized during S@H crunching. I obviously want to maximize the amount of work my GPUs are doing, so I'm wondering if there's a setting or something I missed? I'm running the regular BOINC client, but just started reading about optimized apps (Lunatics specifically). I don't mind messing around with command lines and registry edits, but is there a way to use 100% of my GPU power through BOINC or should I start using Lunatics? Thanks for any input you have. |

(Message 562506)
Posted 7 May 2007 by Silverdude Post: Since the outage I've powered down most of my systems, as they weren't doing anything but wasting electricity. Hopefully my electric bill will be a little lower this month! I'm down to one desktop and two laptops online at the moment (plus one workstation at work), but once I see some work units being distributed I'll turn my other 5 or so systems back on. Good luck Matt and the rest of the SETI team! |

Will more CPUs help?
(Message 234198)
Posted 20 Jan 2006 by Silverdude Post: I'm slowly building myself a new server which will have 2 AMD Opteron 275 CPUs. Since each 275 is a dual-core, I will effectively be running 4 CPUs. Depending upon which OS I go with (Server 2003 or XP 64), can anyone tell me if BOINC will be able to utilize all 4 cores properly? Thanks... Kevyn |
