But I have never heard "sällan hostar hackspetten" being used in english... And that is of course; "seldomly the woodpecker coughs".

Hey Carl! That's an interesting expression. I think in English it would probably be "Occasionally, the woodpecker coughs".

But what do people mean when they use that expression? Does it mean that now and then, even the unusual happens?

It would be akin' to... "Never in a million years"

Ahhh! Thanks for that, Carl.

That's one of the things that I love about this forum: you're always learning new things. :-)

Than you have this one... "över huvud taget", or in english, "over the head taken".

Love intranslatable expressions:-) Me and the swedish parliament representative to the EU used that expression in english to the total bewilderment of the british representative and the boss at CERN. It made half of our sentences totaly ununderstandable... *Muahahaha*

Hahahah!

Tell me what it means. I'm dying to be more knowledgeable than the boss at CERN. If I ever meet him, I'll pretend that everyone knows that one! LOL

Edit: Here's one in Hungarian. "Nem minden tarka sarka farka tarka, chok a farku fayta tarka sarka farka tarka". It's a tongue twister, like the English "Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Picled Peppers".

Translated literally, it means, "Not every chequered peacock has a chequered tail, just the chequered tailed peacock has a chequered tail".

Fair equivalent would be "just about"...

And the not literal translation?

Are you hungarian? Sorry if I am nosy.

Lead might work better. :)

Bronzed wins looks better:-) Who has ever heard of a led-medal:-)

I guess it will be the forum you where in last. But with more buttons you could get to any forii.

No, it takes you http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_index.php.

Okay, but still, with a few extra buttons you would be able to go to any foraii.

That's what I'm suggesting. I imagine Jeremy might forward this idea to Rytis ... ?

I hope so, would be perfect.

The new PM system is great!
Could use an outbox, though.
And is there any information posted about how it works, for example, how many posts can your inbox contain? Will thay auto delete when the box fills up to a certain number of posts or after a certain date if you do not manually delete them?

All good questions. If no one else does it before I get home, I'll email Rytis who has been working on the forum code. And I'll post his response once I hear something.

Jeremy

Might also ask him if it's possible to get a " Return to Forums " button. Having to click the " Back " arrow a bunch of times to get back to the forums is a pain.

I see the red X got added, along with what KM asked for. But, it'd be nice to have it list which forums you can go back to.

I never got far from Toronto, Montreal and Quebec and general areaishness. Yeah and Banff of course.

If you've been to Banff, you've been to Alberta. Though, because of the mountains, it has a certain British Columbia vibe.
Winning!

I gave a masterclass in composition there one summer. Nice little place if I remember correctly.

I mean, I know I'm a naughty boy and all.

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare pm_header() (previously declared in /disks/setifiler1/home/boincadm/projects/sah/html/user/forum_pm.php:160) in /disks/setifiler1/home/boincadm/projects/sah/html/inc/forum_pm.inc on line 10

I think that was done as an emergency act to stop you from PMing while you where banned...

I myself work with a quite different "world-view". All my work is done on the assumption that the universe is truly discrete and that everything is encoded as information and that what we percieve as being reality is just the projection of a simulation running on a Universal Computer... this is an unproven theory, and since it is untested and unproven theory you might see it as a worldview instead of a true science. But we are working on testing and proving it.

You can argue that what it is that we 'understand' to be our existance is an abstract view that our brains conjure up from sensory stimuli...

You seen The Matrix film trilogy? ;-)

Is the "Universal Computer" idea from any hard observations or is it an abstract ideas game playing with information theory?

Are there any testable predictions that can be made by treating our world as a 'discrete simulation'?

Keep searchin',
Martin

So far it is an abstract logical/mathematical idea. Thusly it is still an ontology and not a hard science as per se.
But there are testable predictions made out of it. There are some mentioned by Fredkin in his Digital Philosophy.

*Scratching my shaggy head* Have I ever been to Alberta?

Western Canada. A gazillion barrels of oil, so a strong economy. Think Texas with a Canadian accent, eh. :)

Oh my... I just imagined dear old Kinky Friedman eating chili reading a book loud with a canadian accent...
I never ventured that far west, I am still angry at myself for not going by train across Canada.
