发表于:26 May 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Using -use_sleep, I find that (running 3/GTX 1080 or 3/GTX 980 on my crunchers), Arecibo WUs use about 20% of a CPU and GBTs about 30% of a CPU (using BOINC Tasks). So I set the CPU usage in app_config.xml to 0.5 for v8; this allows me to use more of my CPU threads for v8 WUs. NB: having also noticed that Astropulse WUs use just about a full CPU, I set them to use 1 CPU when running them on my GPUs. |

Somewhat OT, but...a RAM Question
(消息 1863941)
发表于:27 Apr 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: That was a major issue with Dell during the days of DDR1/2 in that no more than 6 banks of ram could be used. As I haven't dealt with any Dell machines using DDR3, don't know if that issue has been resolved. Me neither. But the problems I was talking about were with homebuilt machines, not Dell (or any other pre-built machines). |

(消息 1863920)
发表于:27 Apr 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Well, I ran overnight (11 hrs, 32 mins) with no errors. Kind of what I thought. As far as high/low density, that was a ddr2 thing, I thought. (Almost all Intel ddr2 chipsets could only handle (max) 2gb ddr2 RAM sticks, but AMD could do 4gb sticks). I had not heard that it was relevant to ddr3 until it popped up in this thread. NEVER seen it mentioned before. Besides, it was never relevant for name brand RAM, IIRC. Only saw it advertised on eBay, with unbranded RAM. |

发表于:26 Apr 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Since it was 32GB, the pass took > 3 hours. I thought that was enough, especially since the buyer had the problem(s) after a short time. But I suppose he could have bad air flow in his system. I use an open bench (motherboard on my desktop). Easy enough to see - I will run it overnight. Thanks for the suggestion. |

Somewhat OT, but...a RAM Question
(消息 1863823)
发表于:26 Apr 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: I buy and sell hardware on eBay and Craigslist to finance my crunchers. I do pretty well - I have managed to finance several machines over the last few years - I now have 2 dual E5-2670s, one with 2xGTX 1080s and one with 3xGTX 980s. And it has been fun doing it. But I have recently had an interesting problem selling 4x8GB of DDR3 1600MHz desktop RAM on eBay - the buyers have had problems with them, despite the fact that I run them through at least 1 pass on Memtest before even putting them up for sale. And when I got them returned to me, I retested them with Memtest - no problems! One was a set of Crucial Ballistix, the other, Team Vulcan. My question is - what could cause this? In one case, the user said he had Memtest problems with them. But I don't. Maybe I should dismiss this as a form of buyer's remorse? But the other user claimed he had problems with the RAM in Windows (don't know which version). Is it possible that (since the RAM is the max possible for the desktop and CPU involved) that there is a (subtle) problem with the CPU's on-board memory controller? Or some configuration problem in Windows? Any ideas? And thanks for reading this and your time! |

BOINC Stats Question
(消息 1862861)
发表于:22 Apr 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Until a few days ago, the link (which was under the BOINCstats button on my userid page): http://boincstats.com/stats/user_graph.php?pr=sah&id=24185 used to give me a page of my stats for SETI@home ONLY, including the "last 40 days" tab. Now, I get an error with it. The Boincstats link on my page now has the following: https://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/user/detail/d36551df2978466eb4c06ced981d1ef9 which gives a link for all projects, not just SETI. How can I fix this? I want to get to the "last 40 days" page for SETI only, not the combined version for all projects. |

发表于:29 Mar 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: I have a system I have been playing around with and am testing some parameters with. It was getting the old STOP 0X116 VIDEO_TDR_ERROR fairly often, like 2 or 3 times a day...but you know what? The system crashed, produced a crash dump (which I could look at with Who Crashed?) and then rebooted. Rather than go crazy trying to figure out why it crashed, it is easier (since it restarts itself) to just ignore the problem (for now, anyway). It is off line for only about 5 minutes so why bother? I could even live with that in production, if I had to. |

发表于:27 Mar 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Total credit 16,451,341 That RAM was a waste of money IMHO; 16GB is more than sufficient for a SETI cruncher. I have one with dual E5-2670s (32 threads) and dual GTX 1080s and 16gb RAM and it is averaging around 85K RAC with no stress. I have experimented with as low as 8GB for both an X58-based and X79-based consumer board with GTX 1080 and GTX 980 without running in to RAM problems. Just look in Windows Task Manager and add up the memory needed by all your SETI threads. Less than a couple of gig even on the dualie, which in addition to 3 WUs/GPU is running 25 threads of MB. |

Panic Mode On (105) Server Problems?

发表于:27 Mar 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Use_sleep with a 1080?? I would drop that and use -hp instead. You have to remember that a 5% increase in GPU times will be more than your entire CPU can do for RAC. 1) I am running dual 8 core E5-2670s, so 32 threads. Considering the GPU threads, actually running 24 or 25 CPU threads on my 2 main crunchers, and they come close to ~1 GPU. Or at least not completely left in the dust like a desktop CPU would be. 2) As far as R3584 goes, I am loathe to do anything not in stock or Lunatics, since it is so easy to screw up the app_info. 3) use_sleep seems to work fine for me, as I mentioned above. |

发表于:27 Mar 2017 作者: Cruncher-American ![]() Post: Am running Beta 6 SoG. I have run with sleep off for quite a while now, as I found that the CPU usage accompanying GPU WUs was basically bogus before making the change. That is, with sleep off my CPU usage/WU is <20% for Arecibo, and ~30% for GBT, as opposed to ~100% without it, and that completion times are about the same - BUT I can run a couple of more CPU threads now because of the more available CPU time. |
