Ironically, a good bit of civilization's progress comes from wars --the computer you are using comes directly from a desire to more accurately aim artillery shells. Nuclear power has the potential to help free us from drought and the tyranny of foreign oil.

Science is neither good nor evil. It is what people use it for that makes it good or evil...

What is the minimum age to participate in the Olympics? And does that vary year to year or is it set in stone?

Currently it is set at 16.

Chinese gymnastics stars He Kexin, Yang Yilin still subject of age doubts

Extract from the first article:

A gymnast must be 16 in an Olympic year to compete at the Games.

Reports are suggesting He Kexin, Jiang Yuyuan and Jang Yilin may be as young as 14.

Allegations yesterday said that Chinese government databases on its top gymnasts, published last December, show that He and Yang were both still 14 at the time they competed.

Until very recently, this has been backed up by the state-controlled Chinese media.

Last November, China's official news agency named He as one of "10 big new stars" who made an impact at a big regional gymnastics meet. It said she was 13 at the time.

But she was 16 and ready to rip in Beijing when a passport materialised stating that she was born exactly two years earlier than her database record of January 1, 1994.

The IGF has said repeatedly that a passport is accepted proof of a gymnast's eligibility to compete, and that China's gymnasts have presented ones showing they are age eligible.

I forgot to mention:Soo lovely hostesses with those typical dresses...poetry?

This was the first beach volley tournament where I saw cheerleaders.

I can't believe China got the gold in boxing. Anyway, do you think China really earned all those gold medals or do you think it's home country bias?

I remember the case of that very young girl who won the gold medal in asimetrics: China says she is legally 16 (but really looks like 13-14 years old);
another case: Gervasio Deferr [Spain]vs. the chinese vault gold medalist....who was better?

I think there are three Chinese girls that could be investigated for their ages. Back in December it is said that a government database listed their ages as 14, but then earlier this year passports appeared showing them to be 16, the birthyear was two years earlier.

The rules say that a passport is accepted proof of age, but it seems that there is evidence that at least one record (either the database or passport is/was wrong).

All of these girls won gold but interestingly for one of the girls, who beat an American girl (who ended up with silver) the U.S. team isn't calling for an investigation or lodging a protest. It seems they are happy to let the result stand.

I remember something similar happening back in the days of KWSN Chicken apps. I think when two units finish together or very close together sometimes new units would not be started on all the cores that finished.

It happened to me a few times, but I haven't had it for a long time and have never seen it using the AK app in windows.

I heard an interesting take on who is to blame. The news guy said that both countries were to blame to a point. However, I liked his example of why Russia was more at fault. He made the below example that I liked.

Event One: Maine forms rebel groups and leaves the Union.

Event Two: Canada falls in love with Maine and people from Canada move to Maine.

Event Three: The rest of the United States invades Maine to take it back.

Event Four: Canada gets mad and Invades the United States.

The point is that Russia has no business dealing with an internal issue in Georgia. If they are worried about their vacation spots and people that moved to Georgia they should do what everyone else does when a country goes into civil war. RECALL THEIR PEOPLE

While technically true there is one difference.

You used in your example:

Canada falls in love with Maine and people from Canada move to Maine.

This is not what happened. For one of the breakaway regions, Russia issued people there with Russian passports. Those people were already there, they didn't move from Russia. They were already there. They would have been part of the Soviet Union before its collapse and perhaps identified themselves as more Russian / Soviet than Georgian.

But these 'Russian citizens' (for lack of a better term) did not move from Russia proper into Georgia they lived in Georgia then in the breakaway region and then took the offer of Russian citizenship/passport while still in land that everyone (including Russia at the time) saw as Georgian.

Some could see that this was a way of Russia getting some of the old Union territory back.

I don't understand... why can't ya'll just make more money... ;)

(I just realized, this thread has the potential of becoming a hecklers holy grail.)

We could print our own, but don't think that'll be accepted ;)
Why not use solar panels to feed the crunchers, especially in countries with 8 till 12 hours sun shine a day
You don't have to convert 120/240 to 12/5/3.3V, wich loses power due to conversion. But do need a backup accu/battery and a voltage regulator, though.
Have to do some calculatin, howmany Watts/m2 (square meters).Efficiency, price, etc.
Unfortunatly Holland is NOT that suitable for solar panels, but the're used more and more.
And a windmill on top off my house, won't be accepted by the authorities!
Cause electricity is expensive in Europe and my crunchers use 3x 210W* ,1x 160W(P4Dual), 1x 44W HP LT, wich produces 1.5x the P4D!, total 834Watt per hour.
The mobile AC unit, I only use when, it's above 25°C outside, because by the end off the day, temps inside get 26 to 28°C, also added through the heat from the crunchers. Downside, it uses 800Watts per hour!

But first you need to have the money to afford a solar system installation up front. Then you recoup the costs through the savings on your power bill. Such an approach might be good over the long term (10 or 20 years or more), but you got to have the up front cash.

If you've got more than 2x number-of-cpu's uploads in a project, work-request to project is blocked. This is to guard against instances there it takes longer to upload results than it takes to run them.

So with a C2D if I have more than 4 Seti units trying to upload and get stuck I can't get any new work. Great. I have 19 units trying to upload. I have been like this for day and I'm crunching on my last two units.

Going to have to go Rosetta or MilkyWay for a little while I guess...

Well almost run dry on one machine (already dry on the other). Funny thing is the machine is supposed to hold a five day cache and is busy trying to upload finished work (having great difficulty) but is refusing to request new work. I guess that is due to upload problems.

I'm going to have to find it another source of work for the night when I go home in about 6 1/2 hours...

Glad it working for you guys.

Can't upload, can't download.

In fact one machine does not even want to get more work when it is supposed to have at least 5 days worth and does not even have enough to get through to the next morning.

Sigh...

(and, after all, surely, we all want what is best for the project, eh?)

And there is the problem. There is more than one group who think they know what is best for the project and want to enforce their idea(s) on to us.

One group (for better or worse) was discovered and has had some members blocked/banned etc.

But there are still other groups (some with more power and influence than others).

I think it was you Kenzie that asked the question about what would someone in the future think of us if the looked back in time at these forums/boards. And I still remember my answers. And it hasn't changed.

I remember your answer (I looked up that thread earlier and cherish your reply) and that long forgot thread contains it’s own clues to my own personal issues hereabouts, eh?

But to the larger issue: In any bureaucracy there will be power blocs seeking the favour of the king. The secret to keeping the whole shebang rolling along is to ensure a balance between the blocs. Lesson one in the world of realpolitik, my friend.

Unfortunately getting the balance right seems to be an impossible task...

And lesson one in real politics I thought was where pollies learned how to cover their a** and blame it on some government staffer etc...

Hummm still no work - 80+ cores are idle..... a few machines still have some WUs left - I may have
to find something else to crunch for a while.

Lol.

I wish I had 80 or more cores. I could get a lot of experiments from my research done easily.

But there are plenty of other projects around. Good luck...

Has anyone else noticed that at times like this, their slower machines are more likely to get work than the big crunchers ? None of my single CPU machines (crunching time > 4hrs) have run out of work while the I've had to swing the faster machines over to other projects to keep thm busy.

Maybe it's because they only request one unit at a time rather than a bulk download.

Brodo

Probably more dictated by the length/size of cached work.

My C2D laptop is out of Seti and doing a couple of MilkyWay units. My C2D desktop has about 1 to 1 1/2 days work left. Then it will be going over to Rosetta if it can not get anymore here...

Don't take this the wrong way Pappa. But whenever that option seems to be presented we get the this is the problem, no it isn't, yes it is, no it isn't....

Followed by suggestions and no that won't work...

Followed by flaming and insults...

And then thread locked or hidden...

And then again in a new thread...

EDIT: Right now the problem is I can't get any work here and Seti is supposed to be the POTM for the team. Got to crunch on MW to tide me over...

The next question is, what is going to be done to stop this repeating itself?

And no sarcasm and dances of joy etc are needed...
