I feel many are missing the point on the strike. A strike is indicative of dissatisfaction or issues that need to be addressed. The fact that one goes through the process constitutes the seriousness of the issue/issues. It is not the length of the strike that is important but that it even occurs. The strike is not intended to hurt anyone/anything but to enhance the relevance of an issue that many feel to be important.

I am not the type of person he wrote it for I wouldn't use it in the 1st place

I can see why...

Total credit 5,708.62
Recent average credit 4.69

Just goes to show the mentality of some users, Credit is not a status symbol, it doesn't project you on to a higher throne then anyone else.

So to all those leaving goodbye and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

SETI will carry on without you the work may just take longer to do

Credit may not be a status symbol but enhances the competitive human nature in most humans. This in turn causes people to addd more machenes and faster machines. To not think this helps the science is ignorance. People are leaving, not only due to reduced credits but because they get tired of the flaming by the ignorant that goes on. That takes the fun out of the projects. Unless you are doing this for the big paycheck, you would most likely be doing it because it is fun and interesting. Maybe even the science. More is better. People should be encouraged to participate, not leave. Negativity begets negativity.

Most people are competitive by nature. You start crunching and focus on the one ahead of you and run the calculations of how long it will take to catch the one ahead of you. You add machines to shorten the time span of conquest. You get used to the current playing field and rate of progress. With enhanced, everyone was left on the same playing field, but had the rug pulled out from under them on rate of progress. The time to catch the one in front of you has multiplied many times over. The motivation slackens at this point. People looked at the credits as payment for their efforts. Many crunch for pure science, which is great. Many others crunch for the credits, which is also great. It is time consuming to keep up with a lot of machines and to keep them tweaked to top performance. You have your average drivers and your professional race car drivers. The pros have all just had governors put on their cars that they spent thousands of dollars on. They are not happy. The average driver does not understand that. They are still operational and driving just fine. The short time to catch the vehicle in front of you has been extended to the extreme. This has severely challenged the competitive nature and thus has created protest. These professional crunchers give a lot to the project. Higher credit for a Work Unit hurts no one and brings everyone into the perspective of the old playing field. Higher credit also brings everyone to the professional level of output per machine. This is something to be considered. Higher credit per WU will not upset those crunching for the science because they will still be doing just that and it will silence us credit mongers. Just my 2 cents.

Do we, the power users, have to go on strike to prove our point? That would be very interesting if everyone who crunches for credit disabled their network access on their entire fleets at the same time for 48 hours. Then do a "study" to see how much work gets reported during the strike. Since Berkeley was the focal point of the "Free Speech" Movement back in the '60's, I'm sure this should be right up their alley.

As I said before, read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. To anyone who has, you'll know exactly why I feel the way I do.

Regards, Daniel.

@ Daniel - I support you 100%...Tell me when. I am sure our machines are considered to be of no loss by many. Let me know when and I can disable my fleet.

For those of you who say "Oh make the credits 1 Credit/WU". You obviously do not care about the credits, so why say anything, you will keep crunching if it was 1 million credits/WU. You obviously dont care what it is set at so why not be on the side of change and ask them to make it better and grant more credit per WU.

Are credit's the only thig on your mind?
What about the science that your pc does???
I think the science is the most important thing in this or any other project.

Credits are number 1 in my mind (YES).
I do it for the science also or I would have done another project.
Not me...I want credits...It helps keep the interest. It is not an easy task keeping BOINC running on a large amount of machines. Credits = Candy
I am like a kid with this and need my Candy.

It looks like Enhanced has the value of my dollar dropping to 33 cents. That kills the fun of the competition. I hope this is resolved so that I don't have to take my measely 130 machines elsewhere to get my money's worth. Optimizing helps one get more bang for the buck without corrupting the science. Credit is important to a lot more people than a few here may think. I believe that I may have to follow Daniel if there is no improvement. Electricity isn't cheap and about 26 of these machines eat up power at home. Individuals such as Crunch3r and Trux should be commended for all the time and effort that they have put into improving this project. So what if people are credit whores. That gives more incentive to crunch and is a cheap way to reward them for doing it. By all these people going after credits and adding machines the science has been helped. To not realize that, one would have to have a short circuit above the neck.

And (for Siran), what is wrong with discussing crunching achievements in the number crunching forum? Please explain, as the forum and original post both have the same topic - crunching.

The primary topic of this thread is beating SETI.Germany. That has always been the topic of choice for your team. Read my previous post for more.... |-:<

Boy, I read this thread wrong. I thought it was a friendly congratulations.
Too much bickering and not enough Crunching. Let's Crunch...

I see an increased RAC as the first step to overall total. With a low RAC, one will never reach the top. The competition is great for the science. It brings out the desire to add more machines to process more work units. As far as enhanced goes; it will only slow the pace temporarily. As machines get faster, this too will be overcome. Once you get hooked you are a Crunchaholic. (I am guilty of this) Being on an enthusiastic and fun team makes things all that more exciting. I think all teams should shoot for the top. Think of what that would do for the science. Every machine added is one step closer to finding ET.

We need to put our trust in the Gentleman at Berkeley. After all it is their project and they have the ability to tell what is going on with the users better than anyone. I feel it is time for this thread to die, This horse has been beaten enough... Lets have some fun and Crunch!

Viruses are a good means to deliver an executable to an unsuspecting host. It is unfortunate that in this case BOINC was the executable. Fortunately computers were only violated and not damaged. I agree with trux that to hide the file is easy by just renaming it. Hopefully this whole episode can be resolved and we can move on without damage to the project.

So far I have read a lot of speculation with no validation. There are a lot of great theories but nothing to really quantify any drastic measures. As earlier stated the best thing to do at this time would be to wait and see what the people at Berkeley come up with. It should be interesting.
14) Message boards : Cafe SETI : Team members as User of the Day (Message 234988)

Post:
As a Team member the ods are that one is more likely to get nominated just because more people know the individual. This, however does not limit just Team members to be user of the day. An enhanced profile and active participation also attracts attention and nominations. There are a lot of participants out there so not everyone is likely to get chosen. Being on a team only increases the odds for nomination, The people at Berkely do not know all these people personally nor is their any conspiracy. This is all in fun. It is luck of the draw for the most part. More exposure to other people increases the odds in your favor but is no guarantee. However, being on a Team is more fun and you meet more people. Involvement in the science, chasing milestones, competition, and fellowship is what makes this a great project. I joined SETI.USA for all the above and have fun with it. I have been a User of the Day, but not on this team. This isn't about recognition to me Have some fun and may the power of the crunch be with you.
