What linux version?
(Message 525933)
Posted 3 Mar 2007 by oh207 Post: To answer the original posters request, I would suggest going with Fedora Linux to start or CentOS. I would recommend against Ubuntu or Kubuntu, or Xubuntu. I have all three of these running on SMP Systems (2 Physical CPUs), and on a fresh install the SMP kernel package was NOT installed. This is with version 6.06&6.10. Also, if you plan on having more than 1GB of RAM in the system, then you will need a "highmem" capable kernel. I no longer use Fedora Linux, I've moved on to CentOS. But i've used it since the first version, and Redhat Linux before that. I never had any difficulty getting a SMP capable kernel running on a clean installation on those versions. If you decide to install one of the *buntu, then you will need to manually install the "linux-686-smp" package. I should also mention that there is a Server version of *ubuntu available and its reported that it installs a SMP kernel by default. |

Posted 13 Feb 2007 by oh207 Post: Thank you for your prompt reply. I did as you recommended and i ran "--update_prefs" again. I noticed something in the log about "New host venue" 2007-02-13 15:31:23 [SETI@home] New host venue: work 2007-02-13 15:31:23 [---] General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 2006-09-08 11:54:48) 2007-02-13 15:31:23 [---] Host location: work 2007-02-13 15:31:23 [---] General prefs: using separate prefs for work 2007-02-13 15:31:23 [---] Number of usable CPUs has changed from 1 to 2. Running benchmarks. I'm not sure if i did something wrong before when i tried to update my preference but the second time did it for me. The host is happily crunching away two untis. Thank you. |

5.8.11 ignoring 2nd CPU
(Message 517067)
Posted 13 Feb 2007 by oh207 Post: Has anyone notice that with the 5.8.11 version for Linux the 2nd CPU is being ignored. I have 3 SMP systems and up until this point they were crunching away 2 instances of the app(5.4.11 worked great). Now with the upgrade to 5.8.11 the 2nd CPU is detected but a second instance is not started. My preference is set to: "On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors". I also tried "--update_prefs" and "--reset_project". Any info will be appreciated. |

Linux 4.43 scheduler bug
(Message 119895)
Posted 6 Jun 2005 by oh207 Post: I've been having a bit of trouble with another scheduler-related bug that I haven't seen mentioned here yet. It applies to the Linux 4.43 CC, which I'm running on Fedora Core 3 on a 850MHz Intel P3, a single processor without hyperthreading. I have 2 projects, S@H and E@H with equal resource shares. I noticed the same problem also. I'm running Fedora Core 2 on an AMD Athlon 850MHz. This happens with S@H and LHC@home. I went to the web sites and edit my Resource share appropriately. I haven't seen this happened since then. |
