1) Message boards : Number crunching : NVidia 436.xx and later drivers can cause very long compute times especially on Arecibo VHAR work units (Message 2015335)

I rolled the drivers back. Crunched a couple of tasks already. Will keep in touch if it happens again.

Regarding the GPU idling I'm still curious if this is the case.

Apropos of nothing, I'm old enough to remember when crunching on GPU did not take up a full CPU core... Just looked at this shit and got mad again:
Run time 19 min 17 sec
CPU time 18 min 3 sec

I believe I may have the same problem. What is not discussed in this thread, though is the part where it is not that the workunits take too long to finish but rather, that the GPU is not working at all.

Can someone verify that indeed the GPU is idling on these units?

This is the computer in question. I should reiterate that I successfully calculated multiple work units with both r3557 (e.g. this task) and r3584 (e.g. this task) SoG apps. It is just that they got stuck after a relatively short while.

[edit]rob smith, I just got into the thread you linked to and this very much feels like what I'm experiencing. I'll try to roll back my drivers and see what happens. Thanks!

Yesterday I installed a new Nvidia 1660TI GPU. I installed MB8_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_NV_SoG_r3557 app using the  Lunatics Win64 v0.45 beta6 installer. It all went well and the gpu started crunching. Cut to a couple of hour later when opened GPU-Z to look at the temperatures when I noticed that the CPU clock is down and GPU utilization is down to 0%. When I opened BOINC it looked like it was working ok, but the estimated time left on the current units was in the days - 4 or five, or something.

I killed everything and switched to r3584 app from Mikes world. Not sure if workunits were flushed. Cut to a couple of hours later and the GPU was again at 0% and the units were estimated at 95 days.

Switched to CUDA50 and have been crunching for more than 20h without issues.
Drivers are latest Game ready drivers from Nvidia.

Is this behavior familiar to anyone? Is there a point in trying to diagnose this? I would not even know where to start.

Linux is out of the question as the machine has other duties as well. There is something I don't understand though. When you say "SoG app will be your best with your RX550 " what do you mean? When I start the Lunatics installer I do not see any SoG app for ATI cards. Here is what I see when I start the installer:

Do I need to install it in some other way?

Hi,

I have an AMD Radeon RX 550 and Nvidia GTX 1660 TI video cards I want to put to use for SETI. I'll be installing SETI optimized apps using the Lunatics 0.45 installer.

Which app should I select/is most suitable/ for each card for maximum performance? Bonus question: how much tasks per GPU would you think will be most efficient (I'm leaning towards 2)?
Thanks!

Georgi

I just bought a RX 550. Using the latest lunatics installer. What app should I choose? For GPU only that is.

Thanks!

I'm looking for a pure GPU number, surely 20-25k includes the CPU, right? If not that would be an amazing RAC :)

Thanks!

I'm thinking of buying a RX480 GPU for the sole purpose of raising my RAC. Do you know what RAC can be expected from such a card? Bonus question, would 8GB of VRAM make difference as opposed to the 4GB versions?

Thanks!

Is AMD better for crunching SETI? Obviously it is all in the details, hence the similarly priced latest generation GPUs in the thread's title, but I seem to recall seeing something on the subject of AMD being better in general. Something about its architecture being better suited for the SETI tasks...

Any thoughts?

Hi Songbird,

. . May I ask what you are running?? Stock? Lunatics? And CUDA or S0G? There are tweaks to release the CPU from the monopolistic grip of SoG if you want to.

. . For the GTX970 if you are running SoG, in the command line file in your BOINC data directory "Projects/Seti@Home" called "mb_cmdline_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_NV.txt" (there may be _S0G after the NV if you are running r3500) [you can edit it with a text editor like Notepad] add "-high_prec_timer -use_sleep" you will then find your CPUs are no longer wholly monopolised.

Stephen

I'm running lunatics 0.45 beta for SoG.(MB8_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_NV_SoG_r3500.exe). I did the command line thing. CPU dropped significantly. It's better but still nothing like the CUDA apps from before.

Thanks!

I have a question. Is there an ETA on when this silliness with the 100% CPU usage (when crunching on GPU) is going to end? I have a GTX 970 specially bought to crunch, instead of the CPU and now my brain hurts every time I see the full CPU core when crunching on GPU.

Hi,

May I ask what does "Signal on GPU" mean? We've been testing signals on GPUs for years, haven't we? What changed?
