The Linux thread
(Message 402349)
Posted 20 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: I've been using SuSE for over a year now due to it's ('till now) excellent hardware support. Unfortunately v10.1 veers from the expected hardware support, and I find that devices that worked fine with v10.0 no longer work. Most annoying is the failure of the recent version to detect or use drives attached to my LSI MegaRaid 493 SCSI RAID controller. I am expecting eight 40GB ATA100 drives to arrive within the next few days, four of which I will be using with my 3ware 7500-4 IDE RAID controller, and I'd like to be able to use SCSI drives I have with the LSI controller for my /home. Unfortunately no one at the SuSE support fora have any helpful ideas. The only responses I received referred to fake/software raid cards, which does not apply to the LSI controller I have. I suspect the problem is due to the removal of non open source kernel modules that were used in previous SuSE versions. Since I'm going to be installing a fresh operating system it looks like it's time to consider alternatives. I have Kubuntu and Sabayon burned to dvd and ready to go. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE. Sabayon is a newly renamed distribution based on Gentoo, formerly known as RR4/RR64. A review of Sabayon can be found Here. Asy suggestions of other distributions to consider? Anyone out there using an LSI MegaRaid on one of the newer linux versions? |

(Message 402180)
Posted 20 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: It's kind of odd that this thread appeared. Just the other day I was contemplating the subject of black holes and wondering about the possible tie to the creation of a universe. The thing I'm still trying to understand is what point in the evolution of a black hole the trigger occurrs. It may seem silly, but the reason for this train of thought was a PBS show I watched that included a segment on Einstein and his theories. I think I'll do a little research for curiosity's sake. |

Linux vs. Windows..
(Message 398928)
Posted 15 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: I noticed when I dusted off my linux drive and booted it up, opened the boinc manager and ran benchmarks, that they were almost exactly half of the benchmarks that I get on XP on the same computer. shouldn't it be the other way around, if any differance at all? This is an ongoing problem with the linux version of BOINC that has not been resolved. The only solution at this time is to us a version of BOINC optimized for your particular processor type. It doesn't quite eliminate the difference but it significantly reduces it. |

If you use SuSE, KDE and SuSE's icons, the 'Mostly Crystal" theme is a good match. It also allows the KDE color scheme to be used in Firefox (something the other crystal themes don't allow. Why are so many theme creators fixated on grey?) |

Fun with Solaris
(Message 397911)
Posted 15 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: Sorry for the delay. Things have been... *difficult the last couple days. The computer turned out to have an intel processor. :( On the plus side, I bid and won eight 40 GB deskstar hard drives. Tested and in good working order, $127 delivered. Looks like it's time to find another 3ware controller. * My mother's nearly sixteen year old cocker spaniel/lhaso apso Baby has been sick lately. After a week of declining health and trying to nurse her back to health we took Baby to the vet. Unfortunately she was too sick to save, having suffered the canine equivalent of two major strokes. After sixteen years my mother had become very attached to the dog I'd given her the year my father died. I was there when the injection was given and lent what support I could. It broke my heart to see my mother cry, saying goodbye to her longtime canine friend. If it's a choice between the dc fora or mom's needs, well, I'll have to put mom at the top of the list. |

Fun with Solaris
(Message 395995)
Posted 12 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: Is it a Sun system or did someone just load Solaris on it? I only have limited experience with Solaris because of my work but someday I would like to own one myself. There is one computer here at work which I can access and I found the system info in the cde version of the desktop but it wasn't Solaris 9. Good luck. I'll be heading over there in about an hour, and I'll post a message with the results when I get back. If it turns out to be a sun system he'll probably be willing to sell it. He has a strong preference for intel processors. |

Fun with Solaris
(Message 395972)
Posted 12 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: A friend of mine was given a computer which, surprisingly, is running Solaris 9. I started digging into it yesterday (WooHoo! Another operating system to explore!). I convinced him, at least temporarily, not to switch to windows yet. I switched the desktop environment from the previous owner's cde to the java desktop and picked a more windows like theme so this friend wouldn't feel so lost and told him to have a look around. I haven't found the system info application so I have no clue what processor it has. The first thing when I get there later this afternoon I'll pull the cover and have a look around. Then I have to figure out why the media player won't play dvd movies. Or, maybe I'll just find out what processor it has and upgrade it to Solaris 10 and hope it resolves the dvd problem. Anyone out there use solaris? Any hints, tips, and suggestions would appreciated. |

BOINC Simplified GUI
(Message 394311)
Posted 11 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: My point is there are problems that have continued for a year or more. Take the disparity between the benchmark scores of a computer running linux and the same computer running windows. There are other problems as well but rather than fixing those the priority has become the simplified version. I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for someone who can't be bothered to take a half an hour and do a little reading to figure out how boinc works. These are the same individuals who the easier proficiency tests were created for. These are the people that the U.S. military's technical training was written at a sixth grade reading level for. If the trend continues we're all in serious trouble. The alpha version I was talking about is the BOINC alpha, the test version that insures that as few bugs as possible exist before it's released for widespread use. Yes, it's open source but there is little chance that any changes I suggest would be adopted. There was a change made on December 16th that caused the benchmark results on my computer to drop. I spent the night/morning December 20th/21st going through the changes that had been made and listed in the checkin_notes. After compiling numerous versions I found the cause for the drastic drop and reported it. To this day, every time I download the source code I have to eliminate the one line that causes the unacceptably low benchmarks. What do I mean by that? Take the benchmark results from the standard BOINC v5.5.11 for example. 403 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 678 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU Kind of low for 800MHz P3s. Comparable, I think, to the benchmark results my old 400a celerons used to get running win2k. Of course, if I were running the simplified version I wouldn't even see this info. Out of sight, out of mind, right? And before you say it, I know seti no longer uses benchmarks. There are, however, many projects that still do. |

BOINC Simplified GUI
(Message 394209)
Posted 10 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: Some suggestions for the simplified GUI - Advanced Mode? What is it you find so hard to understand? The simplified version seems to be the highest priority. The 'Advanced' version is getting less attention. I've seen the ideas mentioned suggested by others for more than a year. None of them have been implemented in the standard client, and I have seen definitive statements that some of them would not be. When I mentioned the 'hiding messages' I was referring to a change recently made to the alpha version. With the current alpha version of boinc certain messages which were displayed by default in previous versions are now disabled. |

BOINC Simplified GUI
(Message 394193)
Posted 10 Aug 2006 by ![]() Post: Some suggestions for the simplified GUI - Advanced Mode? Somehow I doubt any of that is going to happen. They've obviously decided BOINC provides too much information and have already started hiding some of the messages displayed by default. Adding functions would be the opposite of their expressed goal. I think the ideas you've expressed are good ones, but then, I thought so every other time someone suggested them. |

I cleared out the old files and set boinc to allow new work for seti beta. The first thing it did was try to download v5.12 but it seems there is no longer an app available for linux. Perhaps that switch will be enough for some to support them. I'd have preferred Edwards over Kerry in the last election. Of the two, I think he would have made a better president. He would have definitely been a better president than GW. But then, so would Ronald Reagan's co-star Bonzo. |
