SAP is out of work, so if you still didn't get a model to work on, you can safely detach from this project again. No new work will be generated. You can attach to the normal CPDN project instead.

Sat 28 Oct 2006 11:27:45 AM EDT|http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed: system fopen

A system fopen error can also occur when the directory that BOINC runs from, or one of its sub-directories is hidden, read-protected or doesn't have rights to be written to.

I will have another look but I went through each folder and had a look when I got the error as that is what I thought it might be. It seems strange that this only happens with SETI. I have also attached to Eistein, Xtremlab, WCG on this PC sucessfully but only SETI won't connect. I will just detach nad forget it.

It looks like this is a problem on the SETI site.
Which boinc client version do you use ?
Do you use a proxy server ?

I am using 5.4.9 of the Boinc Manager and t Boinc core_client_version>5.3.12.tx36 I am not using a proxy.

This error could have a lot of reasons...

Server problems or servers are bussy or some problems on your firewall.
I did not seen your Linux system in your computers list, so it could be, that the attachment has not worked right. Could you please do a "reset project" from the boincmanager, or stop the boinc client and start it with "./boinc_client -reset_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu".
Also, what happens if you retry to attach to the project again.

It could also be roblems with the rights of your boinc directory. Could you please verify, that your boinc directory and the subdirectory projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu has read, write and execute rights for your user under which boinc run.

Do you have started the boinc_client directory from the directory, where boinc_client is installed ?

I am away from home at the moment but will have a look tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.

Hi

I reset the project from the Manager but I am still getting the same error. I have attached to Seasonal Attribution on this PC since I have had this error so it is something to do with SETI.

I still get the error when I try to attach.

47) Message boards : Number crunching : reporting immediately (Message 313952)
Posted 23 May 2006 by Profile Dingo
Post:

One of the triggers reporting is the connect to option, which also controls your cache.
The results will report after one period of the connect to option, therefore if you leave the option at default results are reported within 2.4 hrs. But this only gives you little a small cache. If you set it to say 5 days so you have 5 days of work on your computer then unless the computer requests more work it will not report units for a long period.

As we the participants see it we would like to have a cache of work that see's us through the ocassional Berkeley outage but report shortly after the units have completed. Hence one of the reason why participants use Trux or Crunch3r clients.
From Berkeleys POV they would prefer that reports are in batches of several reports, because it reduces server load and reduces the chances of server overload and hence greater risk of breakdown. And they state frequently that rather than complain about running out of work during outages we should join other projects and not have a large cache of work.

From both POV's the requirements are diametrically opposed. So ideally we need two different options, one to control the cache and one to control how often the computer contacts Berkeley.

It's not going to happen, it has been discussed before and Dr A. seems to be fairly adamant that more options are not going to be added.

Andy

I have my preferences set to 10 days, I like to have a few tasks available. I never get 10 days worth of work but more than I would if it was set to 5 days. No matter what it is set to all but one of my PC's report immediately.

I thank you for the interest and the answers provided.

It all seems very complicated for an old guy like me. I will just let them build up and return them manually I guess.

The problem really is with HashClash, where I had a problem, because I had over 700 results that had been sent back but stayed on my Pc ready for returning. When I saw them I tried to returm them manually using the update tab, but there is a problem when there are too many results to return, on the server side, and I lost all of the results.

There is a post on HashClash about the problem http://boinc.banaan.org/hashclash/forum_thread.php?id=18

Thanks for the reply.

Hi

All but one of my PC's reporting immediately after the task is completed and there is nothing for me to do. I have one that sends the results back but the task stays in BOINC untill I force the return by using the Update. Is there a setting in a file somewhere that I can set?

All the PC's use the current version of 5.4.9 and are the BOINC standard not modified.

Thanks

You can get a cleaner copy of his app_info.xml by going to his post and hitting the reply button. That way you won't get the extra blank lines.

Darkstar use the preserve format directives, which help by retaining indentation which helps readability a lot, but unforunately pads each line.

The copy from the reply page technique is even more useful when grabbing posted versions by people who did not use the preserve format directives.

Thanks that fixed the problem, much appresiated

Is this going to be a problem ?? I only crunched 2 tasks and then resumed crunching or another project that has older tasks. The 2 I crunched seemed to have worked fine and have been validated by Seti.

Hi

I have a pC that reboots from time to time due to a eronious driver problem that I have not been able to track down. I am going away for a week and want to leave the PC running while I am away as by female partner will be here.

The question is what is the best way to start BOINC as a service if you already have a bunch of work units.

1. Can I just uninstall and reintall BOINC as a service. Eill the WU's be left?

2. Just install the same version as a service?

3. some other way which you will explain.

If BOINC is running as a service How do I see that all if working well. Can I just start up the manager to see ???

Thanks

Not that it helps you any but I am still getting WU's on my six PC's. Just got some for this PC in fact. I am connected 100% of the time to the internet though. Not much help but I don't think it is a system wide problem.

EDIT: ---- I just checked all my PC's and there are some that are still getting work but there are two that are not getting any.
