Alternative to BoincView
(Message 560975)
Posted 6 May 2007 by Lee Carre Post: if I am right you will not have any problems with the author of BoincView, because you (hopefully) do not use or modify HIS code. You want to write your own piece of program. that's also my interpretation of his intentions ... some suggestions... Indeed there are many issues with the standard manager as well as 3rd party versions, I'm not saying it's perfect, far from it, but it seems that Rom is spending his time improving the way the BOINC core client actually works first (which is the sensible option). I assume he'll look at cosmetic/manager/features etc. after the core client is stable. Or perhaps interface design isn't really his area, which is why the system is designed to allow 3rd party managers to control BOINC. |

Alternative to BoincView
(Message 560972)
Posted 6 May 2007 by Lee Carre Post: BoincView's author makes his opinion on open source fairly explicit in the FAQ. Yes, I saw that, although that doesn't really help the situation. Espcially as Seb (the BV developer) isn't always receptive to ideas or suggesions, and seems that he's writen the application for his own use (and just happened to release it for public consumption) rather than designing it for what most users want. |

Linux Q&A
(Message 505278)
Posted 19 Jan 2007 by Lee Carre Post: well, gotta start somewhere ;)And now for some Linux related issues :) In brief for initial answers to get you going...OK, thanks :) i'll have a read of the BOINC one as i've already got Kubuntu installed :p using an ethernet connection, using a correctly configured DHCP server as well, so IP config settings etc aren't an issue, like i said, i can access some websites, but not others (on the internet)[...] all local traffic is fine, so it seems like an MTU problem what's the difference between ext3 and ReiserFS?02. ...which filesystem do i want, and the dialogue box asks for a "mount point", which at present is beyond me lol If you were to want to share with windows, then you can use "VFAT" but you lose a lot of the unix security.i'd rather do the "correct" thing for linux, then us e something like samba to get SMB file sharing to work, but thanks for the tip :) In unix (and hence Linux), EVERYTHING is viewed as a file. A mount point specifies where in the filesystem a device 'appears'. Hence, you could format some partitions that have device numbers /dev/hdd1 /dev/hdd5 /dev/hdd6 and mount them so that they appear in the filesystem at /mnt/win_c /mnt/win_d /mnt/win_e, or you could have /mnt/backup01 /mnt/backup02 /mnt/backup03 or any name you like. Mounting under /mnt is a good convention. However, you have the freedom to mount anywhere such as /home/lee/backup01 or whereever.ah i see, but i'd want the disk to be completely independant of the system disk, so that i'm able to format the primary, reinstall, and still be able to access the secondary to retrieve my files etc. surely placing the mount point as somewhere in the file system would mean it's "bound" to the system disk in some way?? Partitions are counted as 1-4 for the four primary partitions, and then 5 onwards for the logical partitions. Much more flexible than Windows and consistent. They don't change if you add/remove other devices/disks.sounds good, much better thoughtout than windoze :) it does, but as i don't know how to restart either the machine or the GUI i'd rather not resort to "resetting" the machine (hard reboot)03. now that i've got a proper installation of kubuntu on the hard disk, i want to keep it in good working order is there a relativly simple way of restarting the GUI (X Server?) ? i've head of "startx" as the command for certain distros erm, so where is it? i've looked on the K menu but not found anything which looks like an auto updator04. I downloaded and installed Kubuntu v6.06, but now v6.10 has been released, how do i go about "upgrading" my existing installation without effectively "reinstalling" the latest version the functionality you describe is exactly what i'm after, does it also extend to installed applications, or just the system? well i'm not sure ssh would help much cos as far as i know, it only creates a secure tennel through which something like VNC can operate, I have no need for ssh on my local network anyway, unencrypted is fine :)06. the "desktop sharing" feature ... keeps crashing (at odd times, it runs for a while then dies) ... how would i go about having either VNC server run as a system service so it starts at boot time, allowing me to login remotely etc. I'll set the machine up to allow remote control for BoincView anyway, what i want is to be able to remotely access the desktop (remote admin) so i don't have to go to the console of the actual machine when i want to use it, and keep walking between machines how do i disable graphics acceleration? i'm using a driver that came with the distro for an nVidia Riva TNT (very old) huh? universe and multiverse repositories? where and how do i select them?07. how do i install software using the "adept installer" ? I only tent to use stable builds/releases anyway, but I'll be extra careful with linux as i've heard the dev versions are very experimental (especially alpha, and even beta) ah, sorry, should have explained better, i've got the dvorak layout active as the default when i'm logged in (which is how i want it), but how do i set the default layout specifically for the login prompt?08. I don't use the QWERTY keyboard layout, i use Dvorak, how can i apply my layout preferences to the login prompt screen, which insists on using qwerty...? i'm using the display applet in "system settings" (which i assume is the "official" tool to use?)10. i've selected my correct graphics card and monitor from the list of supported devices, but when i try to increase the desktop resolution (above 1024x768), even after Linux appears to have applied my changes, the desktop res is the same as before (still 1024x768) i'll try restarting to see if it takes the settings i'm wondering if it doesn't support them, but isn't saying so for some reason, so if i restart and see a blank monitor, any advice? Thanks for all your advice, i'll let you know how i get onthose are all my issues so far, and i've yet to actually do anything productive with it yet lol do you know of any good info/help sites on the web in general? |

Linux Q&A
(Message 504459)
Posted 17 Jan 2007 by Lee Carre Post: And now for some Linux related issues :) At long last i've installed Kubuntu on a dedicated machine (not a trace of windoze) however i'm having some issues (surprise, surprise) Kubuntu seems to have installed correctly/sucessfully (a nice "install" icon on the desktop when booting from the liveCD, very helpful) and seems to run properly as far as i can tell :) However... 01. I'm having network connectivity issues. The network card appears to be recognised and installed properly, and all local IP traffic works as expected, the problem comes when trying to access the internet. From the pattern of behaviour (some servers/websites work fine, some aren't contactable even though everything is fine on my windows machines on the same network) it seems to have the same symptoms as an MTU problem i had on my machine used as a dial-up router when switching to ADSL over the local network, the problem was something to do with the MTU, and adding a registry entry to lower it for the network card seemed to fix the problem. However, as i've been told Linux networking is well built, i'm wondering if there's some issue with my network preventing ICMP packets to request packet fragmentation from reaching the source host (in this case my linux machine) To clear up some of the basic questions, internal network stability/reliability is fine (accessing internal servers is problem-free), and all my windows machines (most of which hav identical NICs to the one in the linux machine) are fine, bar the one mentioned before (dial-up router), but then all the other windows machine have always accessed the internet over the network, so i'm guessing the machine that was my dial-up router didn't like being told to now use the local network for internet access instead of the modem connection. If it would be helpful to anyone to have more detail of my internal network structure, i'd be happy to give it (it's not a simple network-switch and ADSL router setup). If the problem is with my network, i'd rather try to fix it there than just lowering the MTU (if that's the actual issue) on the linux machine, because i'd rather not have to do it for every linux installation, besides, windows works fine. ---- 02. My typical hardware setup/configuration of my machines is to have a primary "system disk" and a secondary "backup disk", the idea being backup data is kept on a completely seperate disk. The Kubuntu installer kindly made what i assume are the default/necesserary partitions on my "system disk", using all the available disk capacity, which is how i want it :) however, i want to create a partition on my secondary disk to be able to use that as my "backup data" disk again first issue, creating a partition on the secondary disk i've found the "disk & filesystems" item in "system settings" which seems to be on the right track and would allow me to create a partition on the secondary disk, but my issue is which filesystem do i want, and the dialogue box asks for a "mount point", which at present is beyond me lol what is a mount point to start with, and what should i enter for the partition on the secondary disk? second issue, considering what was mentioned (much) earlier by Jim-R. about linux treating the total disk capacity as a single thing, and then dividing the filesystem over the available disks, how do i make linux behave so that i can control what goes on what disk? (backup data on the secondary disk, and system related data on the primary disk) ---- 03. now that i've got a proper installation of kubuntu on the hard disk, i want to keep it in good working order so, if i accidently exit the GUI (as i managed to do when using the liveCD), how do i re-enable the GUI so i can re-start in a user-friendly (read: idiot-proof) way? ---- 04. I downloaded stalled Kubuntu v6.06, but now v6.10 has been released, how do i go about "upgrading" my existing installation without effectively "reinstalling" the latest version is there some form of "auto-update" feature available? ---- 05. Considering Linux is vastly different to windows, how do i go about performing a correct/proper installation of BOINC? eg where to install it (eg where should the program files go), how to have it run as a "system service" (like windows) so boinc starts at boot time (independant of who, if anyone, is logged on) ---- 06. the "desktop sharing" feature (which seems to be just a VNC server) keeps crashing, meannig i'm unable to connect to the machine remotely until i click close on the crash report box using the console keyboard/mouse is there anything that can be done about the fact that it keeps crashing (at odd times, it runs for a while then dies) if not, would it be better to install a full/proper VNC server and use that instead (would this cause any conflicts with the builtin "desktop sharing" VNC server?) if so where should the files be installed to, and if applicable, how? also, for either case, how would i go about having either VNC server run as a system service so it starts at boot time, allowing me to login remotely etc. ---- 07. how do i install software using the "adept installer" ? i'd like to install firefox, i've found it in the list of software, but it's unavailable (greyed-out), why and how do i go about being able to select it for installation? ---- 08. I don't use the QWERTY keyboard layout, i use Dvorak, how can i apply my layout preferences to the login prompt screen, which insists on using qwerty...? ---- 09. How do i install WINE? also, if "Wine Is Not an Emulator" then what is it? ---- 10. i've selected my correct graphics card and monitor from the list of supported devices, but when i try to increase the desktop resolution (above 1024x768), even after Linux appears to have applied my changes, the desktop res is the same as before (still 1024x768) am i missing something? ---- those are all my issues so far, and i've yet to actually do anything productive with it yet lol many thanks to any help/advice/pointers offered :) oh yes, remember, i'm still very new to linux so will need the "idiot's guide" version of any explanations |

Linux Q&A
(Message 504451)
Posted 17 Jan 2007 by Lee Carre Post: Hi all, I've returned after a rather lenghtly absense from the BOINC forums, I'll admit that i haven't checked the entirity of this thread for comment on hard disk best practices, so i hope i'm not just repeating someone elses words... The HD in it is about 9 years old, which is way beyond what I have read as the average life span of a HD. I remember reading that 5 to 7 years was the average retirement age of hard drives. They usually start crapping out before then. I guess I got lucky with this one. And this one has always been running virtually 24/7. It had "Classic" SETI on it from day one. that depends very much on how they're used (as with most things) In short, a hard disk that's always running will generally out-last a disk that's turned on and off even a moderate amount. In general it's better for a disk to be running 24/7 rather than on for 2 hours, then off again. The reason for this is something called thermal stress. I'm sure most people are familiar with the term "wear-out" which causes devices to fail when they approach their total number of running hours (mean time between failure). Thermal stress is something entirele different to wear-out; electronics are inefficient (ie not 100% efficient), and the most common waste product of an inefficient energy conversion is heat. So, in this casu our hard disk is turned on, and because of it's inefficiencies (motor, control circuitry etc.) becomes warm/hot, and thus expands. When the disk is turned off, it's no longer producing heat, so cools and thus contracts. Thermal stress is the result of this expansion and contraction. Devices like hard disks work within very precise limits; for example the distance between the read/write heads and the disk platters (disk serface) is tiny when compared to even something as small as a particle of smoke (the head/platter seperation distance is something like a 50th the diameter of a smoke particle). So what may seem like insignificant expansion and contraction to us, is actually quite significant when put into the context of hard disk operating dimensions. One of the observable effects of thermal stress is micro-fractures in the ceramic platers of the disk and other components. A more startling one is known as "chip creep" where after several years of use, it is possible to "wiggle" the chips on something like a motherboard due to the effects of thermal stress. Different devices suffer more so from either wear-out or thermal stress depending on the nature of the device. Components like hard disks, due to their precise operational requirements, are quite sensitive to thermal stress, so much so that it can cause them to fail long before wear-out would have killed them. So, as i'm sure you can see, a disk left running most of the time avoids these effects to a large extent. I've seen good quality SCSI disks in servers last many, many years because the servers were very rarely turned off. However, devices like monitors aren't really affected by thermal stress, and suffer their failure due to wear-out due to their very different nature compared to hard disks. An average CRT only lasts a few thousand hours of "on" time. So in general you can see the differences in behaviour by different types of devices, for long-lasting hard disks, leave them on, for long-lasting monitors, turn them off when they're not in use. I always buy the same brand, Western Digital. I've tried other brands, but WD has been the best for me. Before this one, I had one that I installed in a Pentium II box and that one is still churning away. But, it doesn't run 24/7, I sold it to a company I used to work for. Western Digital do make very good quality disks, my own experience supports yours in that WD disks generally seem to out-last many/most other brands. |

Ideas for BOINC related Firefox Search Plugins
(Message 363568)
Posted 11 Jul 2006 by Lee Carre Post: i've found another extension that i recommend, it improves your level of privacy while browsing, by not telling other sites where you've browsed/navigated from (to get to their site) well, now that you mention it, i did some tests a while ago (using Ethereal) so see how RefControl compares to comercial alternatives (like Norton Internet Security). the result was that the right combination of firefox extensions is better than a product you have to pay for (long live open source!), RefControl blocks referers for images as well as links, so images hosted off-site can't track you either :) norton only blocks referers for links (which ist't as good). on a side note; on the adblocking front Adblock Plus with the Adblock Filterset.G Updater subscription is unbeatable, it blocks more ads (and in a better way) than norton without affecting the genuine content. It allows you to not have ads be colapsed (norton always colapses them, messing up the positioning on quite a few sites), but Adblock Plus lets you turn that function off to maintain the correct positioning. this has been the final straw to make me move totally to firefox, completely abandoning IE, however, because norton affects data at the network level (removing ads and referers) it's changes affect all apps (and make otherwise valid code, invalid), so to only have the firefox extensions affecting web traffic, then the simplest way is to go to the settings for NIS (right-click the system-tray icon), and on the firewall tab; remove all ports from the "HTTP port list" (the list determines which ports NIS affects, hence working at the network level; affecting all apps). another odd thing NIS does, is it blocks the "Accept-Encoding:" HTTP header, which prevents any app from using compression over the connection (including web browsers, news readers, download managers, the boinc client etc. anything that accesses the web), by removing the ports from the port list and using firefox extenisons instead you software will be able to sent the "Accept-Encoding:" HTTP header which tells the server that they can handle compression, which gives a noticable performacne improvement! if anyone needs help with any of this, then please let me know. |

Ideas for BOINC related Firefox Search Plugins
(Message 354012)
Posted 1 Jul 2006 by Lee Carre Post: in light of the way searching has changed at BOINCstats i can either create additional plugins or use a more advanced method allowing the user to change multiple options while only using a single plugin file the problem with more plugins is that there is then a larger number to maintain and there will be a lot if every possible combination is made available (this would be quite inefficient) the problem with a more advanced method is that the standard plugins can only have one option (variable) (hence why lots of them would be needed for the above method), but to specify multiple options (variables) requires the installation of an extension (sort of like ConQuery, just to give you an idea) which supports the capability of using advanced functions and specifying multiple search options this method is also easier to use, and i'm generally in favour of it so, my questions are: 1. given the choice, which method would you prefer? 2. if the advanced method was chosen, which extension would you like to, or already use? any feedback is greatly appreciated :) also if someone wants to request search plugins for something else, or has any ideas related to the ones already released then please feel free to post them here |

I downloaded BOINC view and ran it, but I don't see where it is any different than BOINC manager. This may be because I am not that computer literate. Not interested in a screensaver or the like, my only goal is to help with the projects. Do not hijack the threads
(Message 318375)
Posted 27 May 2006 by Lee Carre Post: (if I understand your meaning of "minorities"), the real minority is the folks that post on the project forums. The majority doesn't bother. I was with Seti Classic since almost day one, until the end. Maybe 10 forums posts in all that time....well i ment out of those that post, but even if it was out of all SETI users, those that don't post, don't count, because we have nothing by which to gauge their opinion (If "minorities" means "people who complain"), then the percentage should be the same, reguardless of the size of the user base, unless the project really has problems.no, i'm not, what i ment was that the % is always the same (unless your population happens to be mostly pesimists), but due to SETI having more users, the number of "complainers" is larger, even thou the % is the same 3% of 100,000 is greater than 3% of 10,000 In reality, you won't know if it's the "minority" complaining - they might actually be a "majority", but that's up to what the the project allows to be retained in a threadnon-complainers complain when there's a major problem/annoyence, but they're happy when most things are ok, some people's purpose in life is to complain but don't get me wrong, not all complainers are bad, especially if they're complaining to have things improved (but the request is not unreasonable), complainers make good change happen sometimes, but generally, they expect too much, namely things with a high cost:benifit ratio I can see why you may say that, but is the real answer the "red X"? That seems to be a way for the "folks in charge" to elimate things they don't like in the forums.the red X is for extreme cases, it first takes a fellow forum member to submit a report, then a moderator to inspect the thread (and the "offending" post in context) and other things (like one troll reporting another troll :p) and make a decision from that (incase a user is too "liberal" with the red X ;) so it's not a major censorship campaign, i know most of the moderators reasonably well, and they're not petty people, if there's a real problem, they'll do something (usually just edit a post), but if not, they'll leave it (if it's just a troll bashing another troll, who cares, let them flame the thread to death, which keeps them away from the rest of us who have more important things to do and post about :) (if Minorites means something else) see rule #5!oh probably, by some representative from the "Politically Correct" party lol thing is, does it matter to you? i mean; if not i guess you won't hit the red X and i won't be reported, so a mod won't read, and that's the end of it, like i said, i've never used the report feature myself i just believe that people should be able to do what they like as long as it doesn't negatively affect others, in this case the complainers and trolls do negatively affect others (and the trolls don't get anything out of it either) so it's this that i object to (i have nothing against them being a troll, i just don't want to have to read/filter their posts another thing is... am i wrong? if not should i be "censored" for stating fact/truth? i think we're guilty of hijacking now, discussing sociology netiqette, and the like lol |

Actually I like boincview, but found it unreliable when I did use it. The ssh tunnels idea is cool, though, and it would save me lots of VPN hassles. Pity I can't do it using BoincMgr. if boincview is unreliable, make it more reliable if you know how, and all of us can benfit from those improvements |
