Indeed the Validator is running at a much slower pace.

Having 3-4 pages of "Pending" workunits really hurts, especially across 4 systems.

Hopefully things will get a little faster once the work-week starts tomorrow :)

3) Message boards : Number crunching : Electricity Prices and SETI (Message 45741)

While here in Ontario we're capped at $0.043 a KW/h, I still ringup the bill quite hefty each month.

I pay in excess of $275 CDN a month for electricity and use approximately 6,000 KW in a 30 day billing cycle, but this is for a household of 5.

Our water heater, barbeque & fireplace are all natural gas and supplied through a different company. That electric bill is for the lights, laundry applicances (heavy duty Whirlpool Gold washer & dryer), kitchen appliances (20 year old range, microwave, fridge & dishwasher), and for all other electric items in the house.

I'd cry tears of joy if my bill was $100 (45 Pounds Sterling).
4) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Compiling SETI 4.13 For a T-Bird on Linux (Message 44616)

First off, I'm not that great with Linux. I can install the OS, tinker with it, configure scripts, install programs and screw around with loading/unloading services. However, one thing I've never done is utilize GCC on the Linux platform to compile my own applications.

After reading that the Linux BOINC client isn't optimized for a specific platform, I endeavoured to speed things up on a spare SETI@Boinc cruncher I've got:

AMD Athlon 1000 T-Bird Slot A
EPoX 7KXA+ KX133
256 MB PC133 SDRAM
100 GB WD Caviar
NVidia GeForce 2 GTS

Now, I've installed Red Hat Linux 9.0 on this system (Fedora Core 1 won't install correctly on this system... maybe bad disks... and Fedora Core 2 can't boot from floppy as the kernel is too large and this system can't boot from a CD-ROM). The OS is installed with NVidia's accelerated drivers and ready to accept BOINC.

Now, I've used a guide to compile the BOINC client with the most appropriate flags that I could find.

http://www.pperry.f2s.com/boinc/boinc-compile.html - Thanks Ned!

<B>Flags:</B>
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fforce-addr -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -falign-functions=4 -maccumulate-outgoing-args"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I'm just wondering... are these the most efficient flags to utilize on a T-Bird based system? Is there anything else I can add in there to make the Linux client crunch faster?

So far my BOINC bench scores (with my compiled 4.13 CVS client) on this system are:

FP Speed (Whetstone): 744.42 MIPS
Integer Speed (Dhrystone): 2095.57 MIPS

After tinkering with my BOINC/Linux installation, I managed to find this little gem.

http://predictor.scripps.edu/client.php (works for BOINC in general, not just Predictor)

Shows BOINC install, daemon installation & bootup daemon installation for all Linux systems. :)

Forgive me if this has already been answered elsewhere, but is the 4.07 SETI@Home client supposed to roll out to Linux/Mac machines or is it Windows only? My Linux client is still running on a 4.02 client and I was wondering if 4.07 will be made available to us alternative-OS'ers. :)

4.07 decreased my compute time from 6 Hours to 4 Hours for 2 units on a Windows XP system with a P4 2400 @ 2700. Thanks to the SETI crew for fixing the slowdown bug :)

I'm getting it as well, so I think there's a problem with the authentication server on Berkeley's end. :)
