The problems I am having with the C7H are all operator error related not quality/reliability of the design. All the C7H new replacements I have seen are north of $300 :(

After I wrote this post it dawned on me that paying a local computer shop that I like a "cleaning" fee successful or not, would be an excellent investment. So I have sent them a service request.

No reply. Maybe it is beneath their notice. Or maybe they are too busy....

May have gotten the "replacement" MB back upto 3 R5700's. Put the 3rd online this morning.

Just be careful with the dishwasher - you don't want to upset the domestic manager if one is caught using it to clean your dirty computer bits.....

Don't own a dishwasher, would have to borrow another bachelors..... :)

What happened to your C7H?

I allowed too much floor time (dust) in a mining chassis and am down to 2 long Pcie slots that still work. If I use a 1 to 8 or even a 1 to 4 expander on the 2nd slot it will work with 3 gpus (R5700's) which is what I have now.

The MB I have now has no diagnostic lights or a Q-Led. And apparently has 1 of 3 bad long slots. But had 3 long slots. I was going to populate two of them with gpus directly on the MB and use a riser on the 3rd slot.

I do have a model X570 with diagnostic lights but only 2 long slots that I could buy another of.

So I am pondering returning to the C7H or going with a "cleaner" model with at least the diagnostic lights.

The problems I am having with the C7H are all operator error related not quality/reliability of the design. All the C7H new replacements I have seen are north of $300 :(

I am looking for an Am4 motherboard to replace my damaged Asus ROG Crosshair VII. I promise to buy a new board and full price. I just fought and got mixed results with my first attempt at a replacement (used but alleged to be in good working order :( It may be that a new copy of this same model would be fine, except it has no diagnostic lights.

I have discovered to my horror that there are X470 motherboards out there without even led diagnostic lights much less the Q-Led(sp) of the Crosshair VII. Given that I am not apparently in need of Gen4 are there any "compromises" between the very reliable/robust Crosshair VII and something less pricey but just as reliable/robust with at least LED diagnostic lights?

The other thing that would be nice to have are 3 full length slots. Even nicer would be that rarity of the 3rd full length slot being 2.5 slots from the 2nd (like the first slot to the third slot). So far they mostly seem to be 2 slots which leaves you in a crowded position for the 2nd and 3rd gpus.

Thank you.

I think the next time I want to buy an 8c/16t CPU I am going for a 3700x.

It will be more efficient than my 2600/2700 cpus and have as many threads as my 2700 does.

And it won't cost like a 3900x/3950x does.

Tom M

C'mon Tom, you spend on new junk hand over fist constantly. The 3900X is only $140 more than the 3700X and is more capable.
https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-3700X-16-Thread-Processor/dp/B07SXMZLPK $275
https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-3900X-24-Thread-Processor/dp/B07SXMZLP9 $417

Good point. And I do wonder if there will be additional downward price pressure on the 3900x after the 3900xt is shipped?

In the short term, simply reducing the # of cpu threads running tasks will free up enough cpu threads to drive a 3rd Radeon 5700.

I have been gradually bringing Rosetta on line and am creeping up the charts. Noting that tasks use a lot more memory than Seti I have purchased 2 x 16gb same make memory sticks Corsair Vengeance LPX to match the 4 X 8gb already in the Threadripper 2990. Unfortunately this crashed all the tasks I suspect because the 16s are 3200 whereas the 4 x 8 are 3000 and it was making the overclock unstable. Tom suggested studying the BIOS and I did changing the extreme tweak on the ASUS ROG zenith extreme to auto auto. This solved the computational errors and it has been running for two days without any problems. Unfortunately throughput has nosedived so I assume we are back to running at base clock frequencies although I havent been back into the BIOS to investigate. The temp has also dropped by 10 degrees!
I am leary of fiddling too much in the BIOS so I would like somebody who has the expertise to guide me on a step by step basis to force the system to operate at the 3000 level . I appreciate that it would have been better to have all memory at the same frequency but surely you can force higher to operate a tad lower?
Hope you can help.

What brand/model of motherboard?

1) Examine your ram. You want to confirm its speed (3000?)and a string of timing #'s like: CL 14-14-14-34 1.35v
It turns out that not all the ram I own has this kind of information on the ram stick.
You need that information.

2) Someplace in the "overclocking" section of your bios, you are going to find a place where you can set the voltage (1.35v) and all the CL timings.
The ones I have posted are from a 3200 speed module.

Your goal is to set if for your slowest ram DDR4-3000 CL 16-16-16-36 1.35v?

You might be able to find an "XMP1" or "XMP2" profile that runs at 3000.

You also might be able to the "memory presets" that say 3000 CL-16-16-16-36

If you can find a memory preset menu that is exactly or only a little bit slower than you need that might take care of the problem(s).

The higher the CL related #'s the slower the chip.

HTH,
Maybe if someone has your make-model of the motherboard we can be more step by step.

Everyone deserves some "Sun". I believe with 100,000 RAC machines you were highly competitive with the average Seti user(s).

One of my other Seti acquaintances converted his two 4 core with gtx 1060 3Gb Windows boxes there near the end and suddenly he was running right under 100,000 too.

Ouch!!!
Doing a little binge-watching of This Old House, Ask This Old House, and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex 2045 (anime).

Think I may have found it in the "screen" this morning too. It's is a relief!

Got through the 2nd half of the "Tale of Two Towers" extended DVD of the Lord of the Rings Thursday night.

Well I ran out of time and legs, but I got most of my house's backdoor awning completed except for 7 roofing screws that I need to get right on top of it to do.

And it is a lot cleaner than my yard too. :)

My friend Mark and I have 2-4 items to finish up on rebuilding a backdoor porch that is basically an emergency exit.

Then we have some bracing for my front porch and replace about 25% of the surface of his front porch.

All while staying OUT of the HEAT!

I'm guess the hibernation is why I haven't gotten any new projects.

Nope. Its why you haven't gotten any new Seti@Home tasks. You can always go to "Add projects" on the menu and add other research that appeals to you.

A number of Setizens are now processing everything from Gpugrid to Primegrid to Rossetta@Home (Protein folding and Convid19 research) to World Community Grid (Convid19 and other research)

Maybe someone can help me out here. My BOINC project is sitting at 51% and hasn't moved due to "GPU missing" , "Waiting to run (0.00534 CPUs + NVIDIA GPU (missing))". I have taken it off the NVIDIA as I have installed a ATI Radeon card that allows me to use two monitors. I know a bit on PC's, but when it get too techy, I'm lost.

You either have to run the Nvidia tasks "dry" or abort them. They won't self delete for quite a while (if ever). They won't process if there is not an Nvidia GPU installed with the appropriate drivers.

First generation Threadrippers (especially 1950's) seem to be showing more and more on some of the BOINC projects I am participating in.

I have pondered if it its related to the high number PCIe lanes they offer which might support the possibility of more than 6 gpus? But so far most of them are showing a tendency to run 1-2 gpus. The one exception I know of for sure is Kevin O's rig which has been running 4 gtx 1080ti's forever.

Happy Thursday.
