QUESTION REGARDING CREDITS
(Message 301656)
Posted 10 May 2006 by bill_mole
Post: Yes, damn, I forgot that was the problem in the first place. Yes, after you run out of work. Download and install the latest version of boinc, which hopefully will be 5.4.X by that time. then do the detach/reattach. UPDATE: Um . . . . I drained the queues, detached both projects, and completely uninstalled BOINC. I then located the latest BOINC download and reinstalled from scratch; now Boinc Manager is 5.2.13. Good News - I got some 4.18 Units and some 5.12 Units - I get to try the new Work Units! Bad News - My computer still wants double Credit on 4.18 Units! Sort of Good News, it claims more or less the same as everyone else (within reasonable variation) on beta Units - has done all along. AntiVirus and AntiSpyware say my System is clean. This is soooo embarrassing - any suggestions for reducing my PC's greed to normal please? Regards, Bill_Mole |

What if SETI is looking for the wrong signals?
(Message 297519)
Posted 6 May 2006 by bill_mole
Post: What if SETI is looking for the wrong sort of signals? Hi Mark, I remember this 'signal' from the SETI Classic Days. I've seen it a couple of times. As I understand it, this effect is an artifact of the splitting and analysis process, and occurs at the Center Frequency of 1.4200000 Ghz., where the software deliberately suppresses the signal a bit to avoid generating a spurious signal when the results are recombined - or some such explanation. The line appears to be sloping across the display becuse the data has been 'chirped', or shifted in frequency with time, to search for signals with a doppler shift component. There used to be a Science Article on it, but it seems to have disappeared. Congratulations - you have seen a rare demonstration that your SETI cruncher is really working! Regards, Bill_Mole |

Maybe I'll get to understand these Electric Brains one of these days. I need to wait a couple of days for the queues to drain now - then I'll tidy everything up . . . Regards, Bill_Mole |

QUESTION REGARDING CREDITS
(Message 295744)
Posted 5 May 2006 by bill_mole
Post: there are many places with instructions on how to optimize, but if you want to get back to normal, do this: Hi Tony, Yes, I think I'll go back to basics. I've set both projects to "no new work" (SETI Std & Beta - that's all I'm running). It will take a couple of days to run down. Should I uninstall/reinstall BOINC? Regards, Bill_mole P.S. I now have to go to work for a bit (Client calls). Back later |

Post: Bill, didn't you install a crunch3r boinc client the other day? If so, did you also install the optimized seti application? I see your benchmarks are about twice what mine are for a similar machine: Hi Tony, I did give it a try a short while back, but got 'out of my depth' fairly rapidly, and ended up thinking I had got back to my original position - obviously not. Is there an 'easy recovery' route without losing my account/credit ratings? Regards, Bill_mole |

Hi Michael & Mmciastro, I applied patience and waited - and lo and behold 20 work units turned up in the last 15 minutes or so. It must have been Ghosts in the system as you suggested - panic over. Many thanks for your support and kind words of advice. Regards, Bill_Mole |

Post: I see this: I have BOINC Manager 5.2.8 Most recently I was running SETI 4.18 I have 6 beta units, enough for about 5 days, running on 5.12 I assume 4.18 will update automatically when it's ready. At about the time noted I tried resetting and then detaching/reattaching SETI (manually) to try and "shake some Work Units loose", which explains the messages above. I also tried some manual updates - with similar lack of success. Then I saw this thread and decided to join in. Regards, Bill_Mole |

Post: If he was returning errors, wouldn't his quota be lower? It might be a connection issue where he got "ghosts" that are counting agains his total. Bill, do you have 100 uncrunched results on your work tab that were downloaded today(last 24 hours)? Hi Mmciastro, I can see I apparently have about 80 or so units on the BOINC Server, but none at this end. I have a firewall which is set to allow SETI and BOINC to communicate unhindered; and messages and completed units have been flowing fine. That takes me past the limits of my small expertise . . . Solar Eclipse March 29th 2006
(Message 271212)
Posted 29 Mar 2006 by bill_mole
Post: News Bulletin This doesn't seem to have had much coverage in the UK media - probably due to the weather . . . "At around 10.45am on 29th March the moon will start to move in front of the sun. By 11.30am most places in the UK will be seeing the eclipse's maximum coverage (approximately 25% of the sun will be obscured by the moon). This is a partial eclipse. The closest place to see totality is in Turkey where the full eclipse will last up to 4 minutes. The next solar eclipse visible from the UK will be on the morning of 1st August 2008. This will also be a partial eclipse." More on this page . . . http://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/2006/index.html including live webcast from the total eclipse zone Regards, Bill_Mole |
