jason, obviously i wasn't accusing you or anyone of ripping anyone off, as both you and jd have been upfront about what your doing in this thread for instance.

while the Stderr.txt is perfect for listing code contributors, its kinda hidden away for people in the know

Alex Kan's version v8.0 for Windows is a good base for an official name, but again it would be cool if you and JD for instance got obvious credit too :-)

anyway i'll shut up now, its just that i doubt if alex reads these threads so i thought i'd stick up for him he heh

regards

adrian

hiya folks

first of all well done everyone for doing such a sterling job with the port of alex kan's code, very impressive... refreshing too after all the hot air? thats been blown about a new windows worker he heh

my one concern is about the name, i dont really thinks its very fair to take alex kans code and simply port it for other platforms without acknowledging that fact in some way in the name.

i understand its quite challenging to port etc, and dont want to diminish that achievement in any way at all, but the real speed gains and performance in the code isnt yours but alex's

hmm that may sound a bit like i'm griping but its pretty important to encourage brains like alex's to continue to participate in the effort

that's my 2p's worth :-)

and again i'm not trying to diminish anyones achievements :-)

regards

adrian

Hi Adrian,

Take a look in the Stderr.txt output , I think two places Should be enough.

As far as I'm concerned, as I've said before, It is called Alex Kan's version v8.0 for Windows, and the added moniker is only a nickname for fun.

Anyone who wishes to accuse me of trying to rip off Alex's work without due credit has not read my Posts properly.

Jason

ok get the gz archive onto your mac...

right click on it (or control click) and select open with either bomarchivehelper or archive utility depending on what version of OS X you are using

this will extract the iso

open disk utility (its in the utilities folder in the apps folder)

in disk utility select burn, it will now ask you for an image , choose the freshly extracted iso and away you go

make sure you use disk utility for burning as its by far the most reliable way to make proper bootable disks

as for actually installing darwin on the machine, i cant really be of much help as its been many years since i have done it

hope this helps

well done JDWhale

i'm so glad that someone has gone from the land of BS on this and into the world of actually doing something...!

i hope you have great success, although as a mac user i should be miffed, but its all for the science eh ?

also glad that ? isnt involved, how refreshing :-)

keep up the good work

i think you will find that those compute errors are bad work units rather than a fault on who?'s system

something is changing...

hehehe ... I waited for this for long time!

who?

You waited for a long time to have a massive number of compute errors?

thats some serious work joseph and the others here have put in over the last few months, well done !

i'd like to add my thanks and appreciation to the bottom of this thread...

keep up the good work folks :-)

Work I was given today has the new estimates and deadlines. Apparently the new splitter code which Matt noted had more changes than he realized.

Because the estimates are mostly lower, Duration Correction Factor will increase for most hosts when they finish the first WU with the adjustments. That will make the queue look longer and inhibit work downloads temporarily. Also there will be reissues of WUs from previous splits which will have the old estimates and deadlines for awhile.

thanks for the info richard

satan, i agree its kinda ok for him to mess around a bit but this systematic abuse of the system is pretty poor eh ?

hi richard, do you have a link or some more info on this new splitter process ?

Sent by PM - I want Bad to the Bone to do his own research if he's lurking here.

Well, if he's aborting anything that doesn't have a deadline of at least 54 days, he's going to be mighty confused by the new splitter code.

so thats it, is it ?

while thousands and thousands of seti users and machines are quite happy to ride the slightly uneven ocean of credit claimed, Bad to the bone appears as a lone knight fighting for the equal credit units ?

"i dont really care abut rank" ? so why is he doing this?

I am pretty miffed because his actions make the top 20 an unrepresentative place

Bad to the bone why can't you run the app like everyone else ?

please explain why ?

Wasn't there a discussion that the long WUs take excessively long to crunch? Thanks to Alex's optimization, the Macs are processing them pretty fast. Isn't that reason enough to concentrate the crunching power on this chunk of the project?

I don't really care where my boxes rank since I have to use them for my work and can't dedicate them solely to crunching. Otherwise, I would've turned off the vintage machines and saved a lot of energy...

i'd be well up for doing it for my machine...

just need Fred's Data vac and some basic inctructions.. have the time and the enthusiasm :-)

edit: i did ask fred w for the script a couple of times back in nov-dec but he said it wasnt ready yet..so i kinda gave up, assuming he wasn't really up for sharing it ...

regards

adrian

Just wondering if any of our great chartists have gathered/plotted any data, using Fred W.s data vac, from one (or more) of the leaders in the current Mac Attack? Possibly plot against msattler penny rig or some other reference. I think the results might prove interresting.

If there is low correlation bewteen the datas, might this make selection of "WU Credit multiplier" more difficult? Or will only data collected from "stock" applications be given consideration?

Kind regards,
John

dont go SATAN !

its only one user beng a little dodgey, and he's not cheating as such
your machine is doing really well is it not ?

whats the memory issue your talkin about ?

Am I and Adrian the only ones who don't cheery pick?

lol, come on guys crunch what you get given.

I see BTTB is still playing silly buggers. I think the whole top 10 is a joke. These Macs either have major memory issues or the owners are cherry picking.

Think I might find somewhere else to crunch.

I dont see any evidence of UL1 cherrypicking

theres about four kinda dead WU's right at the end of his queue

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4191504&offset=3520

but thats it the rest looks like what you would expect from a queue of over 3200 WU's

SeaHawk appears to be mistaken in that respect, i think assuming that Boinc Managers scheduling which can appear quite bizarre is evidence of skulduggery

as far as i can see BTTB is the only one cherrypickin

SeaHawk please let us have your evidence if your gonna start accussin :-)

erm a couple of points

1. have you included postage ? sound silly but if you get all that from different suppliers then it mounts up :-)

2. theres no overall system warranty

3. its resale value is very much less than a mac pro

4, it only has one external firewire port ! which is virtually useless in the pro/workstation market

5. no firewire 800

6. only one gigabit rj45 port

7. only four ram slots with support for only 8GB total

8. it only runs vista ultimate :-) (oh yes and linux but thats no drawback)

9. the antec case mention is unbelievably ugly :-) and would look a bit silly in a pro environment (silly comment i know!)

10. theres at least 6 different warranty/support structures involved instead of maybe two in the mac pro

ok thats all i can think of for the while... just observations ...

the resale value of the system is the real difference... give it a year and try and sell the thing :-)

adrian

Did some rearch on the costs here is what I found.
A MacPro from the Apple store costs $5899.00. This is a base system with two 3.2 Xeon and four 2 Gig sticks.
To put together a similar system skulltrail system would cost $5,108.
Here is the break down

SKT System Costs

1 Intel D5400XS $614.65 $614.65
2 Intel QX9775 $1,599.97 $3,199.94
2 Zalman HSF $53.90 $107.80
4 DDR2-800 FB-Dimms (4x2) $109.00 $436.00
1 ATI Radeon HD2600 $190.00 $190.00
1 320GB HD $80.00 $80.00
1 Optical Drive $30.00 $30.00
1 Case Antec 900 $100.00 $100.00
1 CoolMaster 750 W Power Supply $140.00 $140.00
1 Mounse & Keyboard $30.00 $30.00
1 Vista Ultimate $180.00 $180.00
$5,108.39

my machine has never been involved in any sort of dubious behaviour apart from running alex kans excellent code

SATAN and ULI's machines are clean as far as i can tell looking through the results

just bad to the bone doing the massaging, dunno about anonymous....

So are people into SETI for the points or for the science? I can see both sides of the story here. It's nice to earn points, but I don't think i'm bothered that some might be fudging the stats - they are still doing work towards the project whichever way they earn the points.

On a perverse note, If the top 10 Macs are called to question, then that would make the Top machine a 16 core Barcelona running Linux ;D
