21 years last month. What has happened since my last WU? Nothing much, just the Arecibo radio telescope crashing to earth. Perhaps Congress will shake some money loose from their wasteful ways and build a new version.

I saw the news about Arecibo earlier today. I'm glad I got a chance to go out on the platform in 2005. It was (still is for now) an incredible place. what will replace it, if anything?

Seems like the server status page isn't updating after the downtime. Still says "[As of 9 Jun 2020, 16:20:04 UTC]" now, and seeing the same numbers I saw before.

True enough. Somehow that doesn't seem critical right now, but it is true.

Also set in stone is "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, ..." - the militia being the gun-bearers in question. Haven't heard much about them being well-regulated.

A preparatory phrase. BTW, do you know the definitions of "well regulated" and "militia"? Your argument is invalid.

Keep in mind that the 2nd Amendment was not written to limit the people. It was written to limit government. "Shall not be infringed" means that the government must keep its grubby hands off the rights of the people. Pure and simple, if you can read and understand English as written, not as misinterpreted over the decades. Virtually all gun laws in this country, at all levels, are a violation of the 2nd Amendment.

+1 (I'm sure that doesn't surprise anyone.)

As we all know the constitution is set in stone as of the date it was written. When it was written "gun" meant flintlock. AFIK there aren't any restrictions on flintlocks. Ergo there are no violations of the second Amendment.

The 2nd Amendment says nothing about "guns". It uses the term "arms". And, repeaters had already been invented when the 2nd Amendment was voted into the Constitution. If we are to follow your "logic" then the use of computers for this discussion isn't protected. When you write a message to me using a quill pen, and delivered on horseback, then, and only then, can be start this discussion.

There has been 1 task "Ready to send" for the last few hours, since around 13:30 UTC today, according to SSP and Munin.

I think it is almost certainly a glitch.

Does anyone still have any WU's that still need Validation ?

It's still there. I suspect you are correct in assuming it is a glitch.

I haven't had any WUs needing Validation since sometime on May 7. Certainly not me.

And, based on the notice from the folks at UC Berkeley, you'll wind up 3 days short of making that 21 years. Bummer, to say the least.

Indeed...but as long as they don't shutdown the upload servers, I'm aiming to have a cache of SAH tasks available that I can still crunch on 3rd April 2020...and send the completed tasks back for validation... lol

I believe that this website and this messageboard will remain open after 31st March.

That is what the notice says. I have a number of jobs on some computers that will continue to run after the end of the month, as well. I'll let those queues run out on their own, then shift to other jobs.

Those jobs (and the ones that were given to me as late as April 20) ran out on May 7. 20.5 years to the day since I joined SETI@Home. And the number of WUs still out there continues to decrease. SETI is slowly dying. RIP.

Finished. The last 3 WUs were completed and sent to the servers. Unless something else comes along I am finished with SETI@Home. 20.5 years to the day.

An interesting problem here. I found that there are PrimeGrid options that will utilize the GPU in my laptop. So I downloaded some and they took off. Great. Now the problem is that they cause the laptop to use more power than the brick can provide, so the battery in the laptop is slowly (like totally killed in a day or so) depleted. So, no GPU jobs for that machine. Oh well...

. . Yep many GPUs in full song can soak up the power, which GPU was it? Also maybe the battery is getting old, as they age they develop higher internal resistance and will get hotter when heavily used making it even higher still so they will die very quickly under prolonged heavy drain.

Stephen

? ?

I just got the laptop new for Christmas. The brick is the one that came with it. I guess I'll have to check with HP when I get home.

Well, hold off on the end of crunching for me. I just had over 150 WUs downloaded to the one machine that is still crunching. That will keep it busy for a while longer. Anyone else?

. . Pardon me while I scream ... I have seen that all outstanding tasks had a resend today UTC but, just as over the last few weeks, my 5 machines received NONE of them ... feeling unwanted <sulk>.
. . Well this round should clear up 99.9% of the project.
Stephen
:)

Sorry about that. The machine that is running these isn't the fastest on the planet, that's for certain. Oh well.
Everything else is crunching for PrimeGrid (lots of points), including a new laptop that has 8 cores and each core is completing a WU every 40-50 minutes. It's RAC should wind up exceeding the others combined. Too bad PrimeGrid doesn't take advantage of a GPU like SETI did.

. . No probs, I was just venting :) It seems to be one of those rules like Murphy's Law, the slowest machines are the most likely to get the any new work. If you are looking to utilise your GPUs then you might look at E@H, many SETI Orphans have taken refuge there.

My "goal" is to finish crunching the remaining 50+ WUs in the queue for the one machine that still has some. Should be finished by Monday (takes about 6 hours to complete one WU and I have 4 cores in the processor). It might get me to a total of 28.1 million by the time it finishes. Or it might not. Probably not, but oh well.

It's been fun for over 20 years.

Eh, what is the above supposed to mean, or resemble? On Edge Chromium, or IE11, it sure doesn't look like anything easily understood.

I think it's suppose to be a 'thumbs up'.

Looks like that to me, too.

The S@H end will possible be like the end of the universe, the last shinning stars will be those who slowly burn their reserves of fuel.
After that the entropy wins and all will end on a eternal cold & darkness.

That, unfortunately, is as accurate a description as I have read.

I had 4 machines crunching SETI. One ran out of work in the last hour and has been turned off. Now there are 3. I'll keep them running after they finish their WUs. One is the one I'm using to send this message and is my home laptop anyway. Another is for my ham shack. The last is my previous consulting laptop, but is still used for other purposes, as well. When SETI WUs are done it will be the end of an era, and not a happy time.

And another has finished. Not shutting it down, shifted over to PrimeGrid. SETI is winding down.

And yet another has finished SETI. Just one to go, and it has enough to keep it busy for another day or three. PrimeGrid on 2 now.

The last machine finished its WUs early this morning. One machine has downloaded a WU that needed another look, but basically I'm just waiting for the final WUs to be validated to find out my final total. 3 are running PrimeGrid, one is turned off because it wasn't accepting all characters in the password (only about 1/2 of them - go figure).

It's been fun, the last 20 years, but SETI is definitely winding down.
