Loving that Outlander machine. How well does your Titan run Seti tasks? I was looking into used Titans, and Titan Blacks for the double precision for other projects.

Originally I had 2, but burned one out and was getting a RAC of about 55k. Now with the Titan and 2 750ti I'm getting a RAC of about 46k

They're definitely worth it, but a 780ti works better I believe and would be cheaper than even a second hand Titan.

And then when you really get down to it a 980ti spanks the both of them, so...

Having said that, if you can get a Titan for a good price (I got mine effectively for free) then they're certainly built for it!

...and I'm hot on your tail with only 3 machines running

I have to say, my long term goal is to build more machines with multi-GPUs as opposed to using Macs I find lying about. Altogether a better idea. That way everything wins.

I say "I don't do it for the credit, I do it for the science." but that's not strictly true for any of us, is it? :)

At least LHC is up and running again, so my friends at IC high energy physics have moved their farm back to CMS simulation and analysis now. A few months ago their RAC was over a million!

That's not even fair. I could build machines like that but I want to stay married and have a home to live in :)

Here are some pictures, for them what care, of my current crop.

Right then, here's mine:

Well, one of them. Here are (some) of the others.

Some Mac Pros

iMacs and a couple more Mac Pros

2 venerable Xserves and 4 new Mac Minis (including the split personality machine, Pluto

A stack of older Mac Minis

And of course, the machine I'm posting this on, my 27" iMac. Yes, I have 2 screens attached to it, I'm a showoff, obviously :)

I have a couple more at home, Just an old and a new iMac. Machines come and go as I need to let users have desktops, but I usually have a few iMacs sitting around donating cores to the cause.

In terms of Credit I am 99th. In terms of RAC I'm 34th. I only run 6 machines, and 2 of those are helping others.

Well done to you though, but you do have 37 machines :-)))

Just had a look at where I am in RAC. According to BOINCStats I'm second in the UK (and 34th worldwide, how meta!)

OK, I can live with that!

Yeah, you gots a couple of ciphers that you'll quickly dispatch, and then Richard next month. Gets a bit harder after that...
Anyway, congrats. I guess there has to be something that Macs are good for!

I can dream, can't I? Also; SHOTS FIRED! :)

37 machines !!!!! wow you also got a power station plugged into the house as it sounds like you need one

35, one got put back to being a user's machine and the other is a split personality.

I suppose a few pictures would be in order. When I get a few minutes I might post some in that thread. (Then you'll see why power/cooling isn't much of a concern :) )

(well, for some reason it matters to me)

Helped by the kind loan of 2 more Mac Pros, They may be older but they're cores for the cause.

Cores for the cause. You heard it here first folks! (if it's original, which I doubt, greatly)

Ivan, I'm coming your way :)
28) Message boards : Number crunching : Cant merge hosts. But they're the SAME host... (Message 1700871)

OK, so colour me confused.

All I did was format the hard disk and re-install the OS and BOINC (I should have kept the BOINC folders with the work in progress but I rushed. They'll get put back into the pot eventually when they time out).

Here are the 2 Plutos:

They're showing as the same

Here's 7423311, the 'original', from when I first set the computer to crunching in November 2014:

Here's 7587350, created not on the 29th May but yesterday (11th July '15), honestly! Unless there's something else going on.

The "something else going on" which may be relevant is that I did notice a while back (possibly even the 29th May, I have no way of knowing for sure) that 3 of my hosts (Venus, Mars and indeed, Pluto) got confused and created a split personality (second host entry of the same name) when I switched them to temporarily use their Wi-Fi interface rather than the Ethernet interface for a short while, as I needed to run them away from switch access. This was easily resolved by merging the hosts by name, which at the time, worked.

Anyway, being the same host it'd be convenient to have the 2 versions combined. But if it's not, it's hardly the end of the world, it's just confusing as to how it happened and I like solving problems if I can.

I'm not at a computer at the moment but I'm pretty sure they are the machine(s) I'm on about. More investigation, then, when I get home.

The one with the 2 x 8800 is a proper new machine I set up. An older MacPro with an nVidia GT 120 and an 8800 GT (BOINC always reports the newest card as being all cards, it seems)

So yesterday I had to rebuild Pluto as I managed to break something (un BOINC-related). I thought the backend would either - as in the past when I've had to do this - pick up that it was the same machine or allow me to merge the two instances of the host.

Not today.

What I'm being told is:

Processing pluto.local
Can't merge host 7423311 into 7587350 - they're incompatible

Incompatible? They're literally the same computer with the same version of the OS...

The LAN IP address may have changed due to DHCP but that's about it.

Thoughts?

...In a fit of heat- or svn-frustration-induced fever today I typed the fateful command 'rm -rf *' thinking that I was connected to another computer in another window in another workspace and not in my $HOME directory. :-( By the time I realised that the command was taking longer than it should, and hit Ctrl-C...

Ivan, my friend, you are not the first to do that and I doubt very much you will be the last. I have done the same. On a client's server... Unsurprisingly, that one very nearly cost me my job.

No matter how experienced you get and how much you you think you know, the universe knows more and will sideswipe you with the tiniest of reasons :)

At least it's all easy enough to get back up and running again, if a bit time consuming.

If this is a known problem slap me on the back of my head, tell me to read more and send me on my way.

I've been a bit radio silent and dealing with work and stuff but now I need to have a closer look at a problem I though was transient but really doesn't appear to be!

I have a bunch of iMacs with ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics cards and they are barfing on GPU work. As far as I can remember there are 3 GPU apps floating about and all 3 are barfing.

opencl_ati5_mac

If anyone is interested (and it's not a known problem I'm missing) I can post logs and other debug bumph.

Graham Middleton, I have you firmly in my sights. According to boincstats I'm only about a month from overtaking you to 21st place in the UK. :-)

Dirk, This is awesome and something I was one day looking at doing (need to save a boatload of money first...) with a couple of changes.

I was thinking of a 4U rack mounted case (mainly because I have a rack to mount it in) and ising Galaxy's single slot 750Ti to fill the 7 slots (price/performance seems right) which I can then upgrade to 4xwhatever later when I save more money for beefier cards.

What OS are you going to run? I was thinking Linux... But then I'm a sucker for spending time trying to make things work...

Dreams, they're good to have.

WoW, nice...is that for crunching or gaming with SLI?

It was strange to me to see that Quadro2000 in my office computer outrated some more power hungry cards... :D
maybe I should give up from GTX 460/470 & get some Quadro instead? :D

For what it's worth; as far as I'm aware the 750(ti) doesn't support SLI.

I ordered 2 750's, Question, will my downloaded tasks for AMD run on the 750? Or should I run them out first?

I don't think they will, I'd run them out on the old cards if I were you.

As an aside, I have a couple of 750Ti running great guns and to be honest, my research threw up that not only was the number crunching ability of the 750Ti pretty damned good, the power requirements are virtually nothing compared to some other cards.

They're PCIe bus powered, that could well be a biggie for people with smaller PSUs

As the others have said, setting <use_all_gpus> to 1 in your cc_config.xml file works a treat.

As for mix 'n match GPUs I think the received wisdom is to stick with the same manufacturer at least. I have a Titan and 2 x 750Ti and everything is ticking along nicely.

The trick is to make sure you also tune the app_info.xml file too. There's plenty of info floating about on how to do that but if you want a condensed and probably shoddy explanation of it all then I'll see what I can knock out for you this evening. In a nutshell as ALL the graphics cards use the same settings (though this might change in the future apparently) you need to set the workload to something sensible for the lowest powered card.

In my case 2 WUs per card is the sweet spot, the Titan could probably stand to do 3 or 4 but not the 750Ti so running at 2 gives the most work per unit time, if that makes sense.

I like the 750Ti, for what it's worth, the price/performance (not to mention low LOW power consumption) is an all round winner for me.
