The new release of Chicken's Optimised SETI clients

Post: I have converted two Pentium D 820's in the last 2 days. They ran a 62 credit unit in about 13,000 sec before the conversion. Now they are usually about 10,400. About a 20% improvement. I just converted two old SSE this AM and will be days before any meaningful data is available (very slow machines) |

Post: I'm about convinced that my oldCeleron Mendocino is just not compatible with Crunc3r's optimized app. :( I have always used the SSE version on my celerons after checking with cpuz (windows) and another program (don't remember what) for linux. I saw you are in linux and checked. It also looks like you have the right proceedure but I'll discribe mine just incase or for others. This is the windows explination but it was basicly identical in linux. I don't think you have SSE probable just MMX but check first with cpuz. I used a SSE2 by mistake once on a celeron and it won't run. So get the right verson which will probably be the Pentium 1/2 MMX. Exit boinc completely. I started by making a complete backup of the boinc folder on the desktop (I don't do anything with this except delete it in a day or two). I then moved all the files in the zip (or tar)into the seti folder which is inside the projects folder inside the boinc folder inside the programs folder(not the backup on the desktop). restart boinc (not the one on the desktop)and it is a go. Be sure to let it overwrite when moving the files into the seti folder. I have never emptyed the cache and never lost a work unit this way. I gave up on linux so I can't check my machine but it did run on the 700 mhz sse but much slower than in 98 se. |

Post: I somewhat did this test but didn't do the reference wu with my celeron 700. I was running ubuntu linux (clean install) with optimized seti (don't remember which one but I always get the latest and almost alway crunch3r) and was 27000 to 29000 per seti work unit. I reformated and installed the orginal 98se. It then went to about 17000 per unit. I changed because the P3 450 with xp was running about 17000 and it didn't seem that the celeron at 700 mhz should be that much slower than the 450mhz p3. It was my first linux install and maybe I didn't have it tuned properly. |

Post: Speaking of Celerons.... I have several celerons running. I had a 700 with Ubuntu and Crunch3r running at about 6 hours a work unit. I have since reformated to 98se and with crunch3r run about 5 hours. The other celeron 2.0 with xp and multiple other things running and it does about 100-110 minutes/wu. I though linux was suppose to be faster but I wasn't real impressed. Maybe there is a more efficient Linux for older systems. |

How fast?

Post: My P4D 820 (2.8 without HT) does one wu every 37-40 mins. 2 at a time so just over 3/hr on seti units. I'm using Crunch3r for the client. I have been careful to turn off any running processes that are not needed except the firewall and antivirus. Otherwise nothing special other than an optimized Boinc. Without that I would be clamming 3-4 credits per unit. With it I still only claim only 8-9 most of the time but usually get about 20. Can't seem to get enough work units for the last few days. The above setup has been runnig only since Thursday but should give you some idea. |

Fastest Computer/Shortest WU Result

Post: Nothing fancy but quite effective. A stock Gateway P4D 820 with no overclocking nor any other modifications. Using Crunch3r I doing work units at 38-40 minutes each. Two at a time so 3/hour. I haven't been impressed with HT on my other p4's so I desided to just do the duel core. I know this isn't the fastest but I think it is presentable. For those who want to just set up a family box, you can still get excellent results with just a good optimized client and watching other installed software that will eat up cycles. |

Post: I agree, lets relax and let them fix it. We(or at least I'm) doing this for science and fun (the credit and team thing is kind of fun). Try another project for a few days while they work on it. Check the Technical News at Technical News to keep updated. |
