Sorry Clicking on a Logo on most any site is an Old timers go to the Home Page trick.

Maybe it is a habit I should un-learn but since most every site and page has one it is most always easier than looking for a link back to a home page.

Thanks

Well if you click on the Seti @ Home logo in the upper left corner of the forum you go to an HTTP site.

And if you go to the Add project tool in BOINC Manager the URL for Seti is an HTTP site.

So maybe they did the leg work and never transitioned the sites to use the HTTPS as primary ?

Thanks

Well we are about 40 days from a one year anniversary of the Last Technical News update.

just inquiring is there any one except remote volunteers still working this project ?

The whole world has volunteers but we have no one with a degree in Berkley that can type an update. Sorry but that is a measured fact.

Thanks

I would like the Validators for Seti at Home Ver 7 turned off. All units are done and home. I also would like the last 71 Units purged and the resources for Ver 7 relocated to where they are needed

The last of the Ver 7 work units are home and validated yet the Version 7 validators and other servers are still running. Can we save heat and electricity and capacity and kill the processes ?

Kudos for the professional roll out of version 8 and thoughtful way of letting version 7 end naturally. As an old timer from back when both are appreciated. Would like a Technical posting every 60 days and there is no reason why we should not get one 4 or 5 months for a project with this many users.

Thanks

31) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Astropulse questions (Message 915349)

Post:
Maybe I am being unclear ... I currently have it turned off at the Project Preference level because 8 of my 16 systems are too old and slow to complete an Astropulse unit within the time frame.

That said I want to do Astropulse work on the other 8 units .... I can't turn on for only some PC's and not the others.

Is this clearer ? This is why I was asking for PC level Vs Project User level preferences on this.

Thanks
Bill

Maybe I am in error .... I have Astropulse turned off in my preferences because most of my systems are too old and slow to meet Astropulse requirements. Is the scheduler and Boinc smart enough to not down load an Astropulse work unit to a 500mhz box ?

If not this is why I would want to have the choice at a PC level rather than at a user level.

Please let me know.

Thanks
Bill

25% of my sixteen systems have enough power to do Astropulse work units. Since the other 12 systems do not I have had to turn off the Astropulse and Astropulse v5 selections in my preferences. Is there any way that this selection could be moved to the system level like the way Home Vs Work is selected ? I would guess that many other users have the same issue. By being able to take Astropluse work units I could take few and bigger units that would be more band width friendly.

Thanks

34) Questions and Answers : Windows : Upgrade problem moving to 6.6.20 (Message 890195)

I have a Windows system that has been running BOINC for muitiple years on various versions of the BOINC Manager. When I tried to upgrade to 6.6.20 I got an error that it could not find the .MSI file. The path to the file location appeared correct. I tried another down load no help. I tried to deinstall to do a fresh install .. same error. I have manually executed the .MSI from its download directory (using the Find command) and same result. Suggestions and help are now needed.

Today's Tuesday, which means we went through the usual database cleanup/backup outage. That went smoothly. As I may have already noted before, the replica mysql server has been regularly failing when actually writing the dump to disk. Our suspicion was that this server was having difficulty reaching the NAS via NFS - and mysql has been ultra-sensitive to any NFS issues. The master server doesn't have this problem, but maybe that's because it's attached to the NAS via a single switch (as opposed to the replica, which is going through at least three switches). Anyway.. we dumped the replica database locally and it worked fine. Our theory was strengthened, though not 100% confirmed.

While the project was down we plucked out and old (and pretty much unused) serial console server from the closet. That saves us an IP address (we get charged per IP address per month as part of university overhead - which is another reason I try to keep our server pool lean and trim). I also cleaned up our current Hurricane Electric network IP address inventory and realized and cleaned up some old, dead entries in the DNS maps. Not sure if this is what has been causing lingering scheduler-connection problems. We shall see.

Noted in the previous tech news thread, the science status page has been continually showing Alfa (the receiver from which we currently collect data) as "not running" for a while now. This was lost in the noise as Alfa actually hasn't been running much recently, but is still should have been shown as "running" every so often as data trickles in here and there. Looking back at the logs there has been a problem for some time now. We get the telescope specific data (pointing information, what receivers are on, etc.) every few seconds as they are broadcast to all the projects around the observatory. Perhaps the timing/format of these broadcasts have changed? In any case, I'm finding our script that reads these broadcasts is occasionally missing information, so I made it more insistent. We'll see if that helps.

- Matt

Matt,

On the science page for Alfa status could you post a since time stamp for the current status ? Off line since (date/time) or On Line since (date/time)

That way we would know that it is cycling.

Thanks

I was hopeing to submit for staff and community consideration a suggestion...

First on the home page and then as a "sticky" in one or more of the Help forums that the suggestion (advice) be given on how and why to delete old hosts from a users device list. Or merge Host records where the system has split records and is still active.

The project does not need to tie up disk space and resources keeping track of old retired hosts that never re-connect and will never send in more completed units.

Since removing an old host does not hurt the users total stats...(many Users are unaware of this) it is a positive and proactive thing to do.
