You got me curious about this, so I checked out the idle mode functionality on a couple of my boxes to see what happens.

On both of them when I switched to the venue I had setup to do idle only crunching, they both worked as I expected.

They initially suspended, but after the three minute delay both resumed until I did something at the keyboard or moved the mouse.

The only thing I can think of is you have something running which BOINC is interpreting as user activity, thus is preventing it from resuming.

Just wanted to let you know that it should work as advertised, so you may want to try experimenting further to see if one of your background apps is causing what you're seeing.

Just to make one point clear: Of course it will show 100%, but this won't affect your other work with the computer. Boinc will only use what the other processes leave over to it.

I once had a dispute with someone who had some really CPU and memory intensive games. He told me that BOINC made the games run slower and the graphics juddering. Might be. But 'normal' applications won't even take notice of BOINC running in the background.

One other reason not to run it at 100% could be heat. The CPU in fact runs some degrees warmer with BOINC than without. (I guess that is because - unlike the 'idle' process - BOINC is constantly moving data to and fro L1/L2 memory). But overheating normally only applies to computers or to notebooks with poor cooling.

Technically you all aren't listening to him... He is saying that he only wants the computer to crunch when it is idle. Hence the "Do work while computer is in use?" setting SHOULD be set to "no". But he is saying that even when the computer IS idle, it isn't crunching. I have seen a few scattered reports of this problem. I may try playing with my preferences tonight and see if I can duplicate it. I have never used this setting since seti doesn't affect the usability of my computer. But some people may have their reasons for not wanting seti to run while they are using the computer. That is why the setting is there.

i have EVERYTHING set the RIGHT way, and as i can see, i am not the only one who has this problem... is there any way how to solve this??? patch? new version?? i can compute like this ;[

As some others already have mentioned make sure your preferences is configured with "Do work while computer is in use?" to Yes.

Also make sure you're using the correct "venue", if you aren't running latest client-version it's also possible you've stumbled on a bug there venue is only set if it's been changed, so maybe you're currently running as default venue.

If you do want to only crunch after some idle-time, there's also been some bugs that this only works if you've not got any venues at all...


Hmm, if the preferences are set as they should, maybe you can try v5.1.9, even it's an alpha-version, and see if it works as it should... Note, v5.1.9 doesn't neccesarily work in all projects, so use at own risk. If you don't want to try an alpha-build, v5.2.x is expected released later this week...

On the SETI website, Go to Your Account / Preferences - View or Edit General Preferences.

Set "Do work while computer is in use?" to Yes. Save your revised preferences.

Open the BOINC manager. On the "Work" tab, select Seti@Home and hit "Update." Your new preferences should take effect at once. If you don't Update, they'll take effect the next time BOINC 'reports in.'

In this case "User is active" means user is doing anything at all. Otherwise it only runs in screen-saver mode, which is apparently not what you want.
