Post: ...there were never volcanoes erupting all over the Earth in the past... Just in the week of May 24th/30th of 2006, 16 volcanoes had activity (there are around 1,500 potentially active). Most of those in the week listed in the link below did produce ash/gas emissions. http://www.volcano.si.edu/reports/usgs/ They do add up over time... (edited to fix the URL link) |

Post: I also remember scientists who claimed that Chloroflourocarbons and related compounds were in the process of depleting the earths ozone layer. In 1974 M.J.Molina and F.S.Rowland published their report. All the chemical companies, especially Dupont, automobile manufactures, appliance manufatures, consumer product manufactures, viciously attacked their studies because it was considered bad for business and the economy. Then many orthodox scientists chimed in and ridiculed their findings as well. I agree with you to a point. It should be noted that some of the so-called "orthadox" scientists that chimed in were paid by industry to refute the findings (i.e. they were bought off). I recall some of the news stories of the day that were charging a local professor at one of the colleges here of being paid off by corporate interests to refute the original CFC report. The difference between the CFC situation and the Global Warming situation however is that Global Warming is much more politically charged than the CFC situation was. I've learned long ago that the more political an issue is, the less positive direction the issue will take as politicians jump in and start posturing to whoever they think will give them the votes to get re-elected. Global Warming has become so politically charged that I personally don't believe much in it anymore, especially any of the "cures" to correct supposant damage. Part of the problem I've seen is that many quick studies have been done and accepted as gospel by whichever side did the study. Studies that are done and don't conform to the ideology of the side doing the study are quickly buried and forgotten. Then we have projects like climateprediction. I ran a WU for them to see what one of the models were like and I laughed though most of it. The model I was running showed my area having average temperatures much colder than average during phase 1 and 2 and rediculously high temperatures in phase 3. What that told me is that they loaded information into the model to produce the result they wished to see which was hotter than average temperatures in the future. I'm sorry guys but my area does not have an average temperature of 40-50 degrees in the middle of July. Based on the lower than average temperatures used, of course your going to see a huge increase in temperature when you start projecting future forcasts based on flawed numbers designed to show a particular result. In my opinion, that is the problem with most of the so-called science rolling out on the Global Warming subject. Much of it is flawed as each side uses what numbers can get them the result they wish to see. |

Post: Chill out over global warming By David HarsanyiDenver Post Staff Columnist You'll often hear the left lecture about the importance of dissent in a free society. Why not give it a whirl? Start by challenging global warming hysteria next time you're at a LoDo cocktail party and see what happens. Admittedly, I possess virtually no expertise in science. That puts me in exactly the same position as most dogmatic environmentalists who want to craft public policy around global warming fears. The only inconvenient truth about global warming, contends Colorado State University's Bill Gray, is that a genuine debate has never actually taken place. Hundreds of scientists, many of them prominent in the field, agree. Gray is perhaps the world's foremost hurricane expert. His Tropical Storm Forecast sets the standard. Yet, his criticism of the global warming "hoax" makes him an outcast. "They've been brainwashing us for 20 years," Gray says. "Starting with the nuclear winter and now with the global warming. This scare will also run its course. In 15-20 years, we'll look back and see what a hoax this was." Gray directs me to a 1975 Newsweek article that whipped up a different fear: a coming ice age. "Climatologists," reads the piece, "are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change. ... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality." Thank God they did nothing. Imagine how warm we'd be? Another highly respected climatologist, Roger Pielke Sr. at the University of Colorado, is also skeptical. Pielke contends there isn't enough intellectual diversity in the debate. He claims a few vocal individuals are quoted "over and over" again, when in fact there are a variety of opinions. I ask him: How do we fix the public perception that the debate is over? "Quite frankly," says Pielke, who runs the Climate Science Weblog (climatesci.atmos.colostate.edu), "I think the media is in the ideal position to do that. If the media honestly presented the views out there, which they rarely do, things would change. There aren't just two sides here. There are a range of opinions on this issue. A lot of scientists out there that are very capable of presenting other views are not being heard." Al Gore (not a scientist) has definitely been heard and heard and heard. His documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," is so important, in fact, that Gore crisscrosses the nation destroying the atmosphere just to tell us about it. "Let's just say a crowd of baby boomers and yuppies have hijacked this thing," Gray says. "It's about politics. Very few people have experience with some real data. I think that there is so much general lack of knowledge on this. I've been at this over 50 years down in the trenches working, thinking and teaching." Gray acknowledges that we've had some warming the past 30 years. "I don't question that," he explains. "And humans might have caused a very slight amount of this warming. Very slight. But this warming trend is not going to keep on going. My belief is that three, four years from now, the globe will start to cool again, as it did from the middle '40s to the middle '70s." Both Gray and Pielke say there are many younger scientists who voice their concerns about global warming hysteria privately but would never jeopardize their careers by speaking up. "Plenty of young people tell me they don't believe it," he says. "But they won't touch this at all. If they're smart, they'll say: 'I'm going to let this run its course.' It's a sort of mild McCarthyism. I just believe in telling the truth the best I can. I was brought up that way." So next time you're with some progressive friends, dissent. Tell 'em you're not sold on this global warming stuff. Back away slowly. You'll probably be called a fascist. Don't worry, you're not. A true fascist is anyone who wants to take away my air conditioning or force me to ride a bike. All contents Copyright 2006 The Denver Post or other copyright holders. All rights reserved. The problem I see is that your then punishing the older teams for daring to create themselves early on by saying "it's not fair that your so far ahead and our new team can't catch up so we want you dragged down so we can pass you". Basically that is what the zeroing out of credit and starting fresh for everyone would be. Doesn't matter one way or the other to me personally but by doing such a thing, you then set precedent. A year or two down the road when new teams develop and start wanting a level playing field as well so they can be top dog, will S@H have to reset things again due to cries of unfair treatment and strike threats? |

Post: Well, since this thread appears to be open minded, I will repeat what I have said before. The current system would have been a lot easier to swallow for the power users if they had simply reset everybody to zero when bringing it onboard. They could have captured the old scores as they did for classic and gave everybody a fresh start. That would have been a "true" level playing field. You have to admit that it was a major change in the way credit was figured and awarded, just as Boinc was a major change from classic. Not doing so was like getting your legs knocked out from under you for many of us. I understand completely what your saying and tend to agree with you but we need to look at the realities of the past performances of participants on this project as well. If what you propose was done, we'd all still be here yapping about the same exact thing as we are now. Everyone and their uncle would be complaining about the new system and claiming that they have a better way to do it. Power users would be complaining about their high credits and RAC's being wiped (even though they would be preserved as in the manner Classic totals were based on your proposal) as well as having to start over from scratch. Non-power users would still be criticizing the power users. Power users wouls still be criticizing the non-power users. Cries from both sides would continue about how unfair things are just as they are now. In short, nothing that's done would satisfy everyone and end this. |

Post: Personally I think this week long strike against S@H will accomplish nothing. A week of not crunching won't change anything. Those that feel so strongly about going on strike shouldn't just set BOINC for no new work, they should just detach from the project completely on all their computers and find other projects to crunch and bid S@H farewell. Seriously folks, even though there are some heavy crunchers supporting the strike, the overall effects to the project will be minimal. The science may slowed a bit but the WU's will still get crunched and nothing major will be done to satisfy the credit/rac arguments that many have regarding S@H. Strike if you wish but for me, I'm not changing a thing. A few S@H WU's a week when BOINC decides it's time to download them into the mix of other WU's for the other projects I crunch for. |

Post: Some of the older model microwaves were said to have that effect...But todays microwaves are better shielded...I know several people with pacemakers that use microwave ovens with no ill effects. I guess I have a permanent imprint of that monster in my head. I rarely use microwaves at a convenience store simply because of that old one I was around for a year. The microwave I have at home is pretty tame though and also much newer. |

Post: Just watch out for those convenience store microwaves. Those things are wicked. Never had one of those things but I've seen the one in the store I used to work at in my younger days turn burritos from frozen to a blackend and charred mess in 60 seconds. One customer had a pacemaker, was on the opposite side of the store when someone turned the microwave on and he said that thing was messing with his pacemaker. I have no clue if he was pulling our leg or not but I know that microwave cranked out the power and was a standard model found in many convenience stores. The lights would even dim for a quick moment when that thing was turned on... |
