Hi, everybody - Just some comments about forum moderation here.

(big snip)

I also ask that people on these boards keep their feelings in check. I've found that human communication over the internet seems about 50% more confrontational than it actually is. Of course there are jerks out there who have no social grace. Three key words about how to deal with these people: "let it go." Try your best not to fuel the fires, you know what I mean?

Okay I have work to do...

- Matt

In short: self-moderation is back in effect it appears.

Pittsburgh. One of our other annoying customs here which drives me crazy is to slow down for tunnels. In every other part of the country I've been to, people maintain speed while going through tunnels but not here, Here they slam on the brakes and crawl through 20 mph below the speed limit.

Yeah i can see how that would be annoying!

How about people that don't know how to merge, especially at high-speed (well on the motorway). OMG i just lose it when i encounter these types....

RANT RANT RANT!

In my part of the country there are some civil engineers who need to be forced to drive the roads they designed as punishment. I know of half a dozen on-ramps where there is almost no acceleration lane, yet merging traffic is expected to get from a 30mph (~50kph) road into traffic going at least 60mph (~100kph) and usually closer to 75mph (~120kph).

One of these lethal on-ramps is the exit from the city zoo. Way to be welcoming to the tourists!

That sounds like my neck of the woods. We have several onramps like that in the San Diego area. You have to "floor it" to try to get up to speed because of the lack of an acceleration lane. If you're slow, like my little 4WD truck is, you end up trying to get up to speed on the shoulder.... )-:<

Scariest on-ramp I know. Sunland Blvd to I-5 South in Los Angeles. It's too short to get up to speed, it spills directly into the lane, there is no shoulder, and the trees block the view of oncoming traffic of you and your view of them.

One day even floored all I could hear is the airhorn of the bigrig behind me and I had a closeup view of his grill in my rearview mirror.

The worst Interstate in the country is in Pittsburgh. The Interstate in the downtown area is a maze of on ramps and off ramps where your having to shoot across several lanes of traffic to keep on the Interstate (and the single lane on/off ramps are I-279). I'm surprised there aren't more accidents than there are in that section of roadway.

Example: From the Ft. Pitt Tunnels which is I-279, you have to cross 2 lanes of traffic to hit a left hand ramp and then once off that ramp you have to cross another lane to the right to reach an on ramp and then shoot over two lanes of traffic to stay on the stupid road. It's the dumbest road design I have ever seen anywhere and drives me nuts when I have to travel over it.

It's like riding a bus in my city... everyone jams in up front so they're packed in like sardines and the back of the bus is completely empty (seats included)

Really? How odd! Where is this?

Here is another classic local customer here.... the people waiting for an elevator, don't wait for the people who have just arrived to get out! They try and push their way in as soon as the doors open!!

Classic!

What really gets on my nerves is when you are walking along at a brisk pace in a crowded place (oh that rhymes) and a few people in-front just suddenly "pull up"...there is a screech of nike's and you end up barelling into them.
(it makes me wonder if they drive their car the same way!)

- no i am not tail-gating.

or worse

People that congregate at choke-points in public places!! ARGH!
Good places to stop and block human traffic

1. The bottom of elevators
2. The tops of elevators
3. Narrow walk-throughs

There are literally hundereds of people trying to 'get by' and they (the blockers) are totally oblivious to the fact that the are jamming up the works. Perhaps we need 'human mall-horns'

RDC, maybe your ex-wife is in love. People often mellow out when they are in love, even the fiercest ones. If this is the case, be sure to talk nice about her to her new boy-friend, so he'll marry her. Then you'll have her off your back. :-D

I hope so. I build her up to be a princess if that's the case. LOL

A round on me. The demon ex-wife didn't stay long enough to drive me crazy when she dropped my daughter off earlier today :)

That's terrible! She's letting ex-wives down with such substandard service. I shall report her to the demon ex-wife union and tell her to get her act together. Next time we shall make sure she spends extra time with you to make up for it.

Gee, thanks Es :P

Actually I'm surprised my ex and Jen didn't get into a big knock down, drag out fight last week like they usually do. I actually think the ex might actually be mellowing out some finally.

Beside the fact everything annoys me anymore (getting old I guess), my current pet peeve is my local public TV station that went from occaisional pledge drives to what amounts to non-stop begging. If your lucky, they actually show some normal programming once a month instead of the same old dumb local cooking shows and music shows they always show during their 50 weeks of begging each year.

Obviously, their choice of pledge drive programming isn't working well since they switched to non-stop begging. Maybe if they trimmed some of the expensive and top heavy management they have, they wouldn't have to be begging for money so much.

Ok, I feel much better now...

What is "pie and chips?"

You’ve probably seen my recent TV commercial where I say "Getting a free quote from GEICO is like getting free pie and chips." Many folks have written to ask me about pie and chips. It seems that more people know about getting a free rate quote on their car insurance than know about “pie and chips.”

The pie is a meat pie – a favorite British food. The pie is made of a pastry crust surrounding diced or minced meat and other ingredients including thick sauce or gravy, seasonings, and sliced potatoes. Steak and kidney, pork, minced beef and onion, chicken and mushroom pies, and other combinations are popular in the UK as take-out snacks or pub food. Meat pies are also popular in Australia. Variations on the meat pie include shepherds pie which is topped with mashed potatoes and pot pies, which are readily available in your grocer’s freezer.

Chips are deep fried or baked, crispy potatoes or what we call “french fries” in the U.S. Many of us are familiar with “fish and chips.” Just as in the case of “pie and chips” the chips are simply fries. They are usually thick (like what we know as steak fries) and sometimes fried with the skins left on. Chips are often served with tomato sauce (what we call ketchup) or with salt and vinegar.

Enjoy your pie and chips and don’t forget to get a free rate quote at geico.com. They’re both great!

Oh boy, Rocky's now comes with commercials :P

If you are on a dial up connection have you went into your project preferences page under "Network Settings" and set "Ask before connecting" and "disconnect when finished" to "yes"? Seems like this might help.

That's exactly how I'm set up. That does stop some of the "BOINC needs your attention" messages but not all of them since the 5-minute feature sometimes keeps me from suspending the network access until the retry is over 5 minutes.

Also with S@H: If I report a WU, the time sets itself for 10 minutes but if I'm also downloading other WU's for S@H or other projects at the same as reporting the completed WU I often find myself in the 5-minute feature window.

Now that I understand what is occurring with BOINC, I can better deal with and adapt to it. When I didn't know about the 5-minute feature, it was driving me crazy trying to suspend the network access. Now I can relax and wait a few minutes and then suspend when it occurs since I know when to do it now.

Thanks for the info. That "feature" is driving me crazy, especially since I'm still stuck on dial-up for a few more months at least. At least now I know why I couldn't get BOINC to set properly to "Network Activity Suspended" half the time.

Moderation isn't what makes this project/forum different from the others. It wouldn't make any difference unless all posts were always pre-moderated.

The simple fact is that the forum has reached a critical mass. When somone's nose gets put out of joint, and someone else joins in to support them, then someone else jumps in to support the other person & it just builds up till it boilds over & will continue to bubble away every one just can't be bothered any more.
With a small number of people, it'll never build up to the point of boil over.

I've noticed the same from some other project forums and agree. There are posts made on some of the other forums that would boil over to a full blown flame war if posted here but there simply isn't the volume of participants that actively post at other projects to push it over the edge. It's not to say flame wars don't happen on the other forums but they just don't have the fuel available that this forum has.
