Are you asking what Ubuntu distro I'm using? How do I find that out?

The OS I want to use as the remote is Windows XP.

I've clicked on that manager icon lots of times, and the manager won't appear.

Don't know what "distro" means. I'm not computer savvy, so please use layman's terms whenever possible. I only use Ubuntu because my techie friend didn't have any of the Windows OS discs when I needed to reload one after accidentally downloading a virus.

I tried to open the BOINC manager by going into the BOINC folder and clicking on the boincmgr icon.

Been trying to add other projects, but can't get my BOINC manager to appear. Might be some distantly-related Ubuntu issue I'm not techie enough to understand. I have heard that one can remote-access BOINC on another computer. Is that true?

Will I have to do this again when the next version comes out?

^Okay, I'm sorry I asked.

Could somebody please tell me in simple terms exactly what I'm supposed to do?

Once again, I need to remind people that I'm not computer literate. I don't know what a tar file is, or what Distro RPM is. Please spell it out for me like I'm 70, which wouldn't be far from the truth.

Thanks! Finally managed to install it.

Now if I only could figure out how to switch the screensaver to BOINC...

I wouldn't be saying the things I do if it wasn't really that hard. Difficulty is in the eye of the beholder, so what's easy for you is not necessarily easy for me. I can't even manage to change the screensaver on this OS.

I'm not exactly computer literate... scratch that, not at all. I accidentally downloaded a Trojan a few months back, and Ubuntu was all a techie friend had to reinstall an OS with, so I'm completely out of my league here.

I just upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu, and I'm trying to install SETI@Home, but it won't let me. This error appears:

gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.

Any help?

So what you mean is there's no solution? That your only suggestion is to either tolerate the freezes or withdraw membership from BOINC?

I updated to the latest version of BOINC last week, but this problem has been going on for the last few months, even before I went out of town from May to mid-June and had it switched off the whole time.

I don't know what "allow all users to control" means. There's only one user on my computer. And what's "protected"?

My SETI workunit spontaneously started working, so I don't need answers for that anymore.

The image just freezes, and I can't wake it up with the mouse or keyboard. I don't know what you mean about hibernation mode. Never heard of it outside of laptops, which is not what I'm running BOINC on.

I've been having problems with my computer freezing. I go to bed, then wake up to find it's frozen, can't be awakened with the mouse, and I have to reboot by holding the power button down. This doesn't happen every day, but it shouldn't be happening at all. I use Windows XP.

Also, I've had a SETI work unit for the last two weeks, but the computer is not analyzing it.
