GPU Upgrade - need advice
(Message 1770132)
Posted 6 Mar 2016 by Todderbert Post: Thanks everyone for the great insight. Looks like I need to go with the GTX 750 Ti and spend $150CDN to get a worthwhile performance boost. Some thinking to do. Not sure how the us dollar conversion goes, but here is an EVGA GTX 750Ti "B-Stock" for $89.99. http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-3751-RX |

Posted 18 Feb 2016 by Todderbert Post: I stumbled across this guy on YT, who is building weird but wonderful stuff. Like a CPU heat sink on his GPU, and thereby cooling his GPU under full load at 20 degrees centigrade less, against a way lower sound level. Reminds me of the SilverStone Raven RV02 and Fortress FT02: http://www.silverstonetek.com/raven/products/index.php?model=RV02&area=usa http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=242&area=en |

What's the best valued GPU?
(Message 1761487)
Posted 2 Feb 2016 by Todderbert Post: I'm running a four 970 machine over at Einstein and its rock solid(using 353.62drivers). They are the Nvidia reference models you buy at BestBuy. There was a sale on them for $329. Installed 980ti hybrid kits and running memory P2@3500mhz, and boost clocks around 1400. Temps for the cards average 38-41C, on full 99% usage. I also own four 980s, found some new ones for under $400 so at that price they become a good buy. If your a fan, keep any eye out for deals on EVGA's B-stock page, they had 970s for under $250 awhile ago. |

New rig project
(Message 1760256)
Posted 29 Jan 2016 by Todderbert Post: I built a similar rig using a CaseLabs Mercury Case, its amazing. Tons of room for the hybrid coolers, great support for the gpus, and its made from thick aluminum. If your going to spend 300+ for a case, check it out. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=73909&postid=1757218 |

Posted 12 Dec 2015 by Todderbert Post: You ought to see how much room there is, in a Corsair Graphite 780T! I've just bought one for my new build....it is massive inside and out. I could've gone for a Skylake build, but have stuck to the promise I made to myself, nearly 20 years ago, to never be at the 'bleeding edge' again. The money saved, meant I could buy better quality/better performing components. Nice, take some pictures of that rig when your done. Looks like a solid build. |

Looking good, really good. -Edit, Holy crap -- just noticed those kick ass case fans. Are those AC powered Deltas? |

Posted 28 Sep 2015 by Todderbert Post: Today was a fun day of moving graphics cards from machine to machine. The machine below is Sanford. I put the Titan X in there along with a 980, and a 960 shorty. The case is an Enthoo Pro Metallic Green. Seti Jr. gets an upgrade. It received a 970 from Punisher to go along with a Titan Black...far cry from the two 750Tis. |

Here's a rig I'm running, 2-MBs at a time on a 750Ti only. G3258 with no tasks feeds the card, and is a 24/7 seti cruncher. |

Posted 15 Sep 2015 by Todderbert Post: You may want to stick with AMD, and there are some AMD pro users around the forums that can help you out. If you have two machines maybe move your AMD cards to one machine then do a Nvidia build. Nvidia dominates MBs, and AMD dominates APs. Though that may change with new programs in the future. The Nvidia card/s I would get would be a 970 and above. I run some 960s and 750tis and they are great low cost cards, but for speed and efficiency the 970/980s do an awesome job. |

Corsair Graphite 600T
(Message 1717563)
Posted 23 Aug 2015 by Todderbert Post: I'm leaning towards faulty power switch/lead. My corsair case had a faulty lead to its power led. I had to take it out and resolder the connection at the led. If you have a voltmeter you can do a continuity check on the power switch or test the motherboard with a different power switch. |

Posted 16 Aug 2015 by Todderbert Post: My Deepcool system. I bought these items cheap and re-purposed them. The case was $40, the PSU was $20, the MB was $20, Ram $20, HDD from a busted external USB drive, reused old heatsink from a previous build, the GPU from ebay for $99 and the G3258 CPU was $60. The machine produces around 11-12K aday using the gpu only. It acts crazy when I take a core away, so it gets feed by the whole cpu. |

Ugly as hell but functional, picked it up cheap when it was on shellshocker. I'll take some pics of it when I get home from work tomorrow. I'm running a single 750 in there with a dual core on a cheapo mb, but it works like a champ, though I have to dedicate the entire cpu to the graphics card. If I use just one core it throws a fit. |

Anything relating to AstroPulse tasks
(Message 1711969)
Posted 12 Aug 2015 by Todderbert Post: Not getting AP tasks (when they are available) is down to your SMALL cache size - an AP takes about 0.5 days to run, while an MB takes about 0.1 days, so if your cahce is set to 0.5 days, plus 0 you will only ever get APs when you almost right out of MB tasks, indeed, you may not get any then. Good information right there. |
