Well..

After a few years with the old version pumping out work units without a hitch, I've run up against a brick wall that I cannot overcome in trying to establish a smooth, efficient and problem-free relationship with BOINC/SETIatHome.

I cannot spend hours at the computer waiting to be ALLOWED to upload my work results, much less be PUT OFF when wanting to download new work.

The masters of this system should look up 'volunteer' and make sure they are treating their volunteers with efficiency and respect. Not like a bother to their system.

Adios to the headache and time-eater/-waster that is BOINC. Life is too short to screw around trying to get/process a couple of pieces of data a week.

This is all too hard and too time-consuming.

I loved the old setiathome, then they improved it with this BOINC thing to the point where, as far as I can tell, it's inefficient, unable to even do a simple dialup to report/get new work, and just too damned much trouble to spend so much time with.

Adios setiathome and Einstein..BOINC has screwed you good.

To answer some questions:

I am running SETI and Einstein in BOINC. They have been running together for a few weeks now with no problems....until this latest speedbump--unable to get wu from SETI.

I downloaded and installed v5.2.2 and it is running. However, the manager automatically dials up my ISP then immediately disconnects. Over and over and over again. The dial-up function never worked in v4.x and so I guess I can live without it in v5.2.2, too.

When I booted the PC a few minutes ago and checked e-mail, I opened BOINC and it is retrieving a wu from SETI.

So some semblence of normalcy is returning...

If anyone has any insights as to the dialup-then-disconnect thing, I'd be happy to follow any suggestions/ideas.

Regards,

dale

And people thought Microsoft was unresponsive and abusive to users....

I guess I'm a masochist...I'm downloading 5.2.2 via my dial-up as I write this.

I should have learned my lesson and packed this boinc thing into the recycle bin a long time ago, but nooooo....gotta keep trying to make it work here....

We'll see how 5.2.2 goes.

Thanks for the info...

For a couple of days now, I cannot get a work unit from the server. I click on Projects, Update and the message goes out to the server

10/22/2005 8:02:10 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
10/22/2005 8:02:10 AM|SETI@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 0 results
10/22/2005 8:02:11 AM||request_reschedule_cpus: project op
10/22/2005 8:02:13 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded

Then, nothing.

Well, not nothing, I did get a "Deferring communication with project 10 minutes and 4 seconds" a while ago on an earlier "Project, Update" click.

Seems like this project doesn't want people helping the way it parses out work units.

This is just too much work to get a lousy one or two work units....

very, very frustrating when you want to help and you get slapped around for it.

Reference responses like this when I'm out of work units to process:

9/14/2005 10:27:45 PM|SETI@home|Requesting 17280 seconds of work, returning 0 results
9/14/2005 10:27:47 PM|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
9/14/2005 10:27:47 PM|SETI@home|Message from server: Not sending work - last RPC too recent: 16 sec
9/14/2005 10:27:47 PM|SETI@home|No work from project
9/14/2005 10:27:48 PM|SETI@home|Deferring communication with project for 10 minutes and 5 seconds

I'm on a stinkin' dial-up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not going to be here in 10 minutes and 5 seconds!!!!!!!!!!

7) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC Dial-up Capability? (Message 167520)

I don't have 4.45 on any of my puters, but under my oldest version 4.72 you would go to tools-options- connections tab, select use my dial up. then configure your dial up network.

I've got 4.45, but options only gives one the ability to set language (english), HTTP Proxy and SOCKS Proxy. No connections tab to select dial-up or anything like that.

Connections tab was added in 4.72 to give more options, but 4.45 should work just fine. Does IE automatically dial up when needed? If not, if you have to do some "other thing" to dial up, then BOINC may not be able to auto-dial either.

IE dials up when needed. I thought 4.45 was the latest and greatest. I'll look into upgrading to 4.72.

Thanks,
dale

Dale, have you set the dial up connection within the Boinc manager Options menu on YOUR computer?

Apparently not. I read the FAQ/Preferences descriptions and HTTP Proxy and SOCKS proxy didn't sound like anything I or my ISP was looking for.

Should I set HTTP or SOCKS proxy? I'm guessing I put in my ISP webID (hal-pc.org) or something like that in the address field, right?

Thanks.
Here are my preferences:

Connect to network about every

Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you use a modem) no

Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you use a modem) yes

Maximum download rate: no limit

Maximum upload rate: no limit

Use network only between the hours of
Enforced by versions 4.46 and greater (no restriction)

Skip image file verification?
Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example).
Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no

I've varied the Hours and other settings, but noticed no dial-up functionality.

I'll keep looking.

I'm still on a dial-up to the Internet.

I've been through the BOINC webpages, FAQ, preference settings, etc., and have found nothing to tell me if or how BOINC will initiate a dial-up to upload or download work.

Is there such a feature? If so, where should I look to find and get it working?

Automatic dial-up worked fine in the Classic setiathome.

Thanks,

I'm new here. I've got all of 67 credits or whatever they're called. Over the past three weeks, I've spent literally hours trying to get work units to up/down load.

And now you want me to donate?

Lets see some results....Let's see BOINC dial up (doesn't do it) and connect (doesn't do it) to report a result or get a new work unit (doesn't do either right now). Let's see BOINC get a new work unit (doesn't do it). Let's see BOINC report a result (doesn't do it).

Geez....it just goes on and on and on.

I was a SETIATHOME supporter in the old version.

This new BOINC thing is just too much trouble and effort. I don't know how others have gotten big numbers, but I'm not inclined to spend my life trying to eke out a work unit credit. Life's too short -- on this or any other planet.

I (and likely others) won't donate until I see something that says the system is working. I know it's a catch 22, but that's life. I'm not going to give my money away blindly....not like I've given my time away these past few weeks--which I'm about finished doing.....

dale

Things seem to be improving operationally. I signed on to BOINC August 23, which I guess was in the midst of the downtime. Going almost a couple of weeks with sporadic uploads/downloads and no credits was wearing thin. But, today, credits arrived for the first time. Uploads/downloads seem to be smoother, too. Great job guys! I know there is more concerns and work ahead, but you're doing great.

I've downloaded v4.45 and it's been running. However, there is a line in the v4.45 download webpage that says "Dial-up users should choose the single-user installation."

I am a dial-up, but all recommendations, except for the above, have been to use v4.45.

The BOINC Manager Help/About says I'm using 4.45.

The BOINC Manager Application column for my current work units says I'm using setiathome v4.18. What's up with that?

Thanks for any info....and it's nice that work units are finally being downloaded and worked.

16) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Remote control not allowed? (Message 162513)

Back to the original question:

I'm a newbie in all this.

What is "Remote control not allowed" saying to a user with only one PC?

I also received that line in my Messages section. I'm processing downloaded data (2 running, 2 waiting to run). One piece was picked up overnight. So, it seems to be working. What does Remote Control Not Allowed prevent me from doing? How can I correct it? Is it a reattachment like one of the previous posts suggested?
