Thanks! That answered my question, as today it wasn't working properly again. Turns out ccApp.exe is also listening on port 1043. That explains it. Thanks again!

Today it is working as it should. Again, I didn't change anything between yesterday and today. It's very peculiar.

Maybe thats your problem, you are not running any firewall.

I don't think so. I wasn't running a firewall when it was working. Like I said, nothing changed on the computer from Friday when it worked to Monday when it didn't.

You probably have 'Billie's Firewall Issue'.

Last MS uptdate tinkered at the XP firewall, reactivated it and made it block the boinc processes again.
Make sure that boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are no more blocked by any firewall.

Like I said, I am not running any firewalls, Windows firewall included.

For the past couple days, when I turn on my computer, boinc.exe is not starting automatically. That also means that whenever I try to start the GUI Boinc manager, it gets a message that it can't connect to the local host. I upgraded to the latest version of BOINC and that did not help. Nothing has changed since it stopped working, and I am not running any firewalls. What could be causing this?

In addition, yesterday I manually started boinc.exe at a command prompt and was then able to get the manager to connect. Today, even after starting boinc.exe at a command prompt, the manager can't connect.
6) Message boards : Number crunching : Any experience with widespread distribution of BOINC at school/college/business? (Message 86055)

I've been asked to do some research into institutions, schools, businesses, or any other groups that have had a widespread distribution on BOINC projects on their computers. If anybody here has any information on this, I would like to know what your experiences have been, what the impact has been on network bandwidth usage, the amount of support you have had to give, and so on. Any references to articles or people I could contact would also be appreciate. TIA.

I believe that this has happened to both hosts, but it is usually just with 6297.

I had no problems with it this morning, but when it reoccurs I will post the messages from the message tab.

The BOINC installation folder is the default. It is not shared, and I have Full Control rights on the folder. I am running the GUI, and the process information when it is running seems to be correct.

Every time I start BOINC, I'm getting unrecoverable errors for both SETI units and CPDN units:

2004-11-15 08:03:49 [SETI@home] ACTIVE_TASK::parse(): result is in wrong state
2004-11-15 08:03:52 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 3i0q_100184964_0 (CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5))

2004-11-15 08:03:52 [climateprediction.net] ACTIVE_TASKS::restart_tasks(); restart failed: -148

I am running Windows XP SP2. The errors started recently, within the past week or two, and they came out of nowhere. What could this be?

I have not been crunching SETI units for a while due to the upload problem. From glancing at the threads here, it doesn't seem clear one way or the other if it has been fixed. Is it safe to crunch SETI units again?

I'm pretty sure that the classic SETI program didn't track host computers, so you wouldn't have this issue with the older version.

A fresh install on all the machines is the best thing to do here.

It would be nice if this could be confirmed by somebody in the know! A news item for the front page, perhaps?

I've been to the Windows Update site today twice and they aren't showing that I need any patches.

After finally being forced to upgrade BOINC 4.05 to 4.09, I am now faced with this exact problem. Thanks! BOINC 4.05 was running great on all my PCs, and yet for some reason I was forced to upgrade to 4.09 and things are broken in a major way.

Is there anything else that can be done short of changing the processor settings? If I let BOINC run, will this work itself out eventually?

Thanks for your help. I was under the (obviously mistaken) impression that updating the BOINC client will reset all of your attached projects. This is apparently not the case.

If I do upgrade BOINC to 4.09, will I lose the CPDN WU that has been crunching for weeks and is only at 15%?

I have searched these threads and I am still confused about what I need to do to get more work.

I have BOINC 4.05 and SETI 4.03. This website makes it sound like I will get SETI 5.05 automatically when all my old WUs are done. Well, they are all done, and I am still not getting SETI 4.05. All I get is a message that there is no work available, and that my core client is out of date. I interpret "core client" to mean the BOINC client.

So, plainly, what do I need to do? Do I need to sit back and wait to get SETI 4.05 somehow? Or do I have to manually get BOINC 4.09 to get any more SETI units? If I upgrade BOINC 4.05 to 4.09, will that reset all of my projects? I am under the impression that it does, and I have not installed BOINC 4.09 because I don't want to lose the WUs from other projects I am attached to.

BOINC is supposed to make updating project files transparent, but the terminology they use is pretty confusing.

The cheating was for competition. Cheating is also wrong, remember? If people did not see this as a competition, there would be no cheating, because there would be no point.

My point is that people who see this as a competition are the ones causing the problems such as cheating. If people want to compete on their computer, play Doom or Half Life.
