That poster Chris, gets this Chris, quite hot under the collar with his negative comments. I note he apparently comes from East Timor, if only I could speak Tetum I might have a few strong words to say in his direction! In the meantime as Soft has pointed out, this is not the right place to have a bash at Seti performance. The un-supportive people that sadly wish to do so have other more appropriate forums.

I agree with Mark, in that we don't like to see crunchers leaving, but in his case I don't think we would miss him if he chose to go elsewhere .......

Although I am not crunching at the moment, I must agree with your comment. We AGREE to do this work for SETI. We are not FORCED to do it. Also, way to much importance is placed on credits and things like that. This is SCIENCE, not a game. Points and credit mean nothing here. Just to prove the point, look at my points and rac. Not real good is it ? Well, it's not important to me. As to the problems with the computers, routers, etc... Well, we have to live with that. These things are machines.... not people. They are going to break down or cause problems because they are old and worn out. We all know that the project is not funded very well, and it takes time for the Seti Crew to get enough money to fix things. I'm sick and tired of hearing people gripe about this project because it isn't working the way THEY want it to. Here's how I look at it. If you don't like the way this project is running, then LEAVE. So, although I'm in a position right now, where I really don't have time to do the number crunching, I am going to try to grab some workunits and crunch again. I SUPPORT this project.

I second this! My thanks to Matt and everyone else who helps keep this going

Yeah, I agree with Blurf, seems a sensible approach to take. Those of us that support the project will wait.

Seconded!

Jeff........
I would simply like to say that you have just been a GOD over the last few weeks with your outpouring of information to us all here.

Communication from the project has never been this forthcoming.

I just wanted to let you know how much it is appreciated by us out here in Setiland.
Everybody seems to be able to pipe up when they have something to bitch about, but all too few manage to post when things are going in a positive direction.

And this project right now is going in a VERY positive direction.

The kitties and I are very proud to be a part of it, and wish to thank you for helping us to know what is going on in the background.

Meow meow.

Well said Mark :)

I second AND Third this =)

Actually, I have been become a little infamous for using a number of off color terms too liberally on the forums....
Trying to refrain. LOL.

dell website has all drivers for their products and systems, just got to go find them.

Actually, just read the Dell Service Tag # off the back, then support.dell.com will take you right to everything based on that. Probably grab everything just to have on hand.

If it was me (and it's not), as a first step I'd blank the new HD (clobber the partition table), and use a bootable install CD for Full Windows (boot order should not matter, just make sure you read the screen messages that come across and re-act in time). If the other machine wasn't the same processor class (Centrino was a campaign, not a processor), you've no idea what the ripple could be in moving the HD over.

Oh, and if you do this kind of thing a lot (helping friends with their in-op hardware), you might want to burn yerself a copy of UltimateBootCD and play around with the diagnostics just to make sure you're not trying to resurrect a machine with a wonky CPU or flakey memory.

Best Luck ! (Boinc Luck, I guess)

10 points for suggesting the UBD!

F2 at the boot logo screen is the way into the BIOS for most newer Dells.

If that doesn't work, try hitting the ESC key at the logo screen to switch to the normal POST screen to see what the hotkey is. A helper can be handy for this due to the screen not hanging around too long. If you're quick enough, Pause/Break can stop the display so you have more time to determine what the hotkey is.

DEL works as well

Hiyas Hal
I don't know if it makes any diffrence here but my 3 girls have been purring just fine/w Xp home. All 3 are AMD, and over time I've been more than happy w/the results. These machine are also used for gaming/business/general web surfing. When I 1st started w/the project (win 98 on a k6 laptop) I was happy to help out. I hav'nt used the newer OS's like Vista Due to all the problems my freinds have had over time. I put it here officially however.. I will probably move to W7 A YEAR AFTER the new OS comes out. (waiting for the problems to be fixed ETC) Over all this time I've noticed others here using various flavors of linux and getting good performance too. I guess if all the machines were exactly the same and you tried all the OS's you've spoken of you might get a better idea as far as performance goes.
=) ha that's my 2¢ off into the backround I go....
