81) 疑难解答 : Unix/Linux : Multi-OS installation (消息 162282)

I dual-boot between Windo$eXP and Slackware and don't have problems with WU's timing out. Just use the 'No New Work' button in BOINC Manager, or BOINC control program of your choice and try to run your WU cache dry before switching OS's.

PS: Don't even think about sharing CPDN files between Windo$e and Linux, they have a different format or something. Also with the long deadline you dont have to worry about completing a unit before switching OS's. Just a warning - only run CPDN under 1 OS or you will spend all your time crunching CPDN WUs.

PPS: I'm not sure the latest 4.45 BOINC client runs under Win 98 - you might have to use 4.19. It works perfectly, just missing some newer features and some projects dont accept it any more.
82) 疑难解答 : Unix/Linux : Message from server: Not sending work - last RPC too recent: 'x' sec (消息 162273)
发表于:3 Sep 2005 作者: Profile 5 and a half of 13
Post:
The Wiki explains it quite well, you did'nt get work because you had hit the 'Update' button recently, violating the 10 minute timeout. Perhaps It doesn't explain the reason for the 'last RPC too recent' timeout - I'm not sure.

As someone explained better than I can in Number Crunching recenty, the timeout was introduced because of people hammering the 'Update' button and buggy BOINC clients repeatedly contacting the servers at short intervals. This was apparently creating a condition that was effectively a DDOS (distributed denial of service). Imagine how bad conditions would have been since the server came back up if they did not have the 'last RPC too recent' timeout.

Perhaps you could suggest that the origional post that I am paraprasing be added to the Wiki, if it makes things clearer, and you can locate it.

Anyway , just try and be patient and steer clear of the 'Update' button - it's hard I know.

PS: to quote the WIKI:
'The Scheduler will reject requests that occur too close to each other in time to prevent one Host from "hogging" the Server's "attention". So, in this case, the Scheduler Request was received and rejected. Now the Host has to wait.'

Edit: Way too much bold

Before BOINC had a setting that allowed you not to download new workunits, pushing your disk space usage up to a large number like 100 Gig (usually larger than your disk) and reducing the free space left was the best way to stop downloading workunits before disconnecting a project. As you can see, it still works. Just thought I'd mention it.

The major advantage of BOINC is that you can run multiple science projects. So if one project is having server or software problems (like SETI@home II this last week), or is not giving out work at that time (like other projects, occasionally), you can just crunch for another project and none of your CPU cycles are wasted :)
Wow that was a long sentence :)

PS a sofware history page would be nice. Put in a request in the wish list, its also under Questions and Problems

It's not off topic to remind someone not to login as root, or run programs as root if you don't need to. You are opening yourself to a world of pain if you do :(

I'm going to have to stop posting on these boards before I go nuts or turn into a troll :(

I can feel myself getting more vicious with every post I make.

I don't know what it is, the long wait or all the posts by people who don't bother to read the stickies, the technical news or the server status.

Whatever it is, I'm out of here for now.

Cheers :)

People who complain about BOINC 4.4x, .......

Interesting how varied everyone's experiences are. Boinc 4.25 has always run flawlessly on my machine, ............

It just plain works great for me :)

Dig

I agree Digger with your assessment of v4.25 even though I'm running v4.45 on all my PC's right now. Theres many times I think about reverting back to v4.25 for the simple fact I don't like v4.45 telling me my P4 HT CPU running @ 3.8GHZ that runs the Projects 24/7 with 1 WU on it is Over Committed ... D'oh

The only reason I don't revert back to v4.25 is that some of the Projects require you to have v4.45 installed in-order to run their WU's or you can't run the Project ...

Sorry, should have said the interface that made babies scream :(

The backend was solid and I have to admit it did introduce the ability to suspend and stop projects from getting work, from BOINCManager instead of using the command-line or a 3rd party program.

Edit spelling

Check the Technical News and Server Status for information.

A word of warning, some people get really angry if you call 'Seti BOINC' 'boink' or 'bionic'. There was a troll who used to do that so some old timers get suspicious and short tempered :/

cd "/home/andrew/BOINC" && ./boinc >> /home/andrew/BOINC/output 2>> /home/andrew/BOINC/errors

To background any process in bash simply add '&' to the end of the command.

cd "/home/andrew/BOINC" && ./boinc >> /home/andrew/BOINC/output 2>> /home/andrew/BOINC/errors &

This will give you your terminal back.

This is what I use in run_client

cd /home/seti/boinc
./boinc -allow_remote_gui_rpc >/dev/null 2>>/home/seti/boinc/stderrdae.txt &
cd -

Three lines.

Good luck,

thanks a million - they should make your script the default :D

Note the rants from users "Its s***, hoplessly broken...".
And those are the users that you want to get rid of ASAP, IMO.

If you're willing to sign up for a cutting-edge project, but give up when the gratification isn't immediate and have no clue about how that project operates, then you shouldn't've signed up and/or need to master the art of patience and manual reading.

.o0(That sounded like a rant... my bad!)
Only developers make good debuggers (finding and fixing the cause of the problem in the code).
In code, it's the Devs hands down.

Unfortunately some people seem to think that because a piece of software is available it has been perfectly debugged :(

People who complain about BOINC 4.4x, obviously forget 4.2x, the software that made babies scream, children run crying, strong men blanch and independant women faint :) Sorry, wanted to say that for a looong time ;)

On the subject of writing error reports, I'll have to agree, I'm terrible at that, which is why I don't submit many.

PS: I do understand why you changed to WxWidgets, you needed to write a platform
independent user interface. I also realise it makes no sense now to change, as it would take just as long, if not longer to write an acceptable interface.

You could have taken use of the search feature of this forum and search for "service graphic" and it would have lead you to even to the thread: Graphics when Running As Service (29 March 2005)

Searching is so funny, do it sometimes. ;-)

Don't be too hard on the guy, the search function can be extremely difficult to use unless you know exactly what you are doing.

I have solution for problem with showing graphics in BOINC. The only thing you have to do is:
1. Open "Computer Management" (Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Maintenace")
2. Open "Services and applications" and select "Services".
3. Find service called "BOINC", double click on it and open the second tab called "Login".
4. Set login from "This account:" to "Local system account" and click "OK" to save chcanges.
And that's it! Restart service or computer and graphics will show now!

I also check the box next to 'let service interact with desktop' but will try your method - thanks for sharing :)
